In the golden age of television kicked off in the 2000s, few shows found the level of success that "The Walking Dead" did. Based on writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore's Image Comics series of the same name, the series was adapted for the small screen by AMC with thrilling results. Not only did the show last 11 seasons, airing more than 170 episodes, but it spawned an entire universe of shows that are still going strong to this day.
It all started with that brilliant pilot episode titled "Days Gone Bye," still regarded as one of the best in the history of "The Walking Dead," which sees Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes waking up from a coma only to discover that the world has been overrun by zombies. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) has hit something of a wall. The company reported its second quarter 2023 earnings this week, and while total revenue was up year-over-year, it fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The company’s stock price has taken a beating, falling to $0.88 per share in after-hours trading on Monday amidst news that it had absorbed a net loss of $43.7 million during the quarter.
The numbers suggest that Csse is having a tougher time digesting last year's purchase of Redbox than anticipated. Both CEO Bill Rouhana and CFO Jason Meier said during their conference call to discuss the report with analysts and investors that the company planned to “streamline” aspects of its businesses to help boost revenue flows, which means cuts could be coming to its streaming platforms Redbox and Crackle.

The expansion of free streaming services continues unabated. On Wednesday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) shared some details on its ever-expanding reach and upcoming original programming at the Iab Newfronts in New York. A month after launching a new advertising sales division known as Crackle Connex, Csse reports having an audience of over 80 million monthly active users, up 100% year-over-year.
This rapid expansion was aided by the company acquiring Redbox last May, giving Csse an out-of-home presence, but the majority of the growth comes from the addition of over 160 channels on the company’s free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) and ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services.

This Tales of the Walking Dead article contains no spoilers.
The bevy of spinoffs announced in the wake of the final season of The Walking Dead has been the subject of everything from excitement to exasperation among audiences. For anyone who checked out with the death of Abraham and Glenn at the onset of season 7, it could seem that the franchise is trying to get blood from a turnip.
For many fans, however, placing a greater emphasis on the ensemble cast while allowing the structural hierarchy of the early seasons to slip away has created a renewed interest in the show. With its newest entry, Tales of the Walking Dead, opening up the franchise in ways that the main series never could, it seems that now more than ever, the sky could be the limit for The Walking Dead.

CBS’ venerable drama series NCIS is adding two new series regular cast members for the upcoming 19th season, Gary Cole and Katrina Law.
Cole will play a new character, FBI Special Agent Alden Park. Law plays Special Agent Jessica Knight. She was introduced in the last two episodes of Season 18 as a recurring guest star with an option to become a series regular if the show got renewed, which it did. Knight is a formidable React (Regional Enforcement Action Capabilities Training Team) agent who specializes in hostage negotiations and handles daily high-risk operations with skill and precision. Sharp, athletic and tough, she is fiercely tenacious and with a wry sense of humor.
Details about Cole’s character, Special Agent Park, are not being released. He is not replacing Mark Harmon’s Special Agent Gibbs though Cole is expected to help fill the void left by Harmon’s reduced on-screen presence next season.

The Lionsgate TV production, after consulting with the family of its late star, has enlisted Christina Milian to replace Rivera in the scripted series. The Soundtrack and The Oath alum will take over the part of Collette, previously played by Rivera in the first two seasons of the YouTube-turned-Starz update on the feature film of the same name.

The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) will be an online-only event for its fourth edition, which will take place later this month.
The Festival originally intended to be an in-person event and even announced its selection for the event, which was initially scheduled to take place in December, 2020. However, Covid regulations in Malaysia were made stricter in November, which caused cinemas countrywide to close down and made the event impossible. With the regulations showing no signs of easing yet, organisers have been forced to move the event into the digital space and make it an online-only event.
The festival is now scheduled to be held from January 15th-21st on the streaming platform Mubi. The audiences in Malaysia can stream the selection free of cost by taking advantage of Mubi’s extended 30-days free trial subscription. Joanne Goh, the festival chairperson, together with actor Bront Palarae made the announcement at the 4th MIFFest Gala Night.

The fourth edition of the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) is now set to be held later this month as an online-only event.
The festival was originally scheduled to take place as an in-person event in December and got as far as announcing its selection. However, Malaysia’s coronavirus control measures were increased at the beginning of November, causing cinemas across much of the country to close.
Miffest organizers said in November that they hoped to be still able to put on a real-world festival in January when cinemas reopened. But with the virus still hitting cinema operations that is no longer a viable option.
Instead, the festival will now be held Jan. 15-21, playing out on streaming platform Mubi. Audiences in Malaysia can stream the selection free of charge through an extended 30-day trial subscription to Mubi.

Even though the parameters of the Christmas movie are pretty well established at this point, the merits of more unconventional titles like Die Hard, Batman Returns and Gremlins still find themselves being debated on an annual basis. Most people seem to be in agreement that the Christmas film needs to involve the festive season as either a backdrop or major plot point while incorporating themes of family and togetherness, but what exactly is a Thanksgiving movie?
Is it a pic where the holiday is integral to the narrative like Ike Barinholtz’ directorial debut The Oath? Does it have to specifically involve turkeys in some way like the animated Free Birds? Or the annual Macy’s parade as seen in Ben Stiller’s forgotten Tower Heist? Perhaps one single scene set around the Thanksgiving table is enough to fit the criteria, as appears to be the case with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

There are few directorial debuts as sui generis as Kirsten Johnson’s Cameraperson. A kind of experimental documentary, its premise was simple: it collected unused fragments from her long and storied career as a cinematographer, mostly for non-fiction works, among them Citizen Four, Fahrenheit 9/11, The Oath, and more. There was no story, there was no clear mission statement or theme, and the viewer was left to intuit meaning between the fragments arranged seemingly at random. And it was a success, quickly ushered into the Criterion Collection and taking her from a name among non-fiction auteurs to a name auteur herself. […]...

Expect to see more of Erica Sinclair around Hawkings in the future. Priah Ferguson, who plays the sister of Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) on Stranger Things, has been upped to series regular for its upcoming fourth season, sources tell Deadline. Netflix would not comment.
Ferguson had a minor guest role in a few Season 2 episodes but was more prominent in the series’ third run.
At the end of 1985-set Season 3, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) is seen taking her sons and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) out of the Indiana town to start a new life. There is a jump in geography in the final scene, which takes place in the far eastern end of the Ussr, where guards are feeding a prisoner to an imprisoned Demogorgon, but “not the American.” That American was widely assumed to be Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and a teaser video for Season 4 suggests that it was.

Star Trek's John Cho delves into supernatural horror for the first time with this reboot of the Japanese/American franchise.
The Grudge is one of the strangest franchises in horror film history: the series encompasses nine Japanese films (starting with the original direct-to-video Ju-On back in 2000) and now four American ones. The newest, simply titled The Grudge, is the 13th overall and deals like the others with the central premise of the entire series: if someone dies in a rage, that rage lingers as a kind of supernatural virus that can infect and destroy anyone who comes in contact with it.
A sort of reboot/sequel, The Grudge is directed and written by Nicolas Pesce, who has created a buzz on the horror scene with his first two features, The Eyes of My Mother (2016) and Piercing (2018). Pesce’s take on The Grudge is the first of...

When she was first offered the chance to work on “Joker,” composer Hildur Guðnadóttir wondered if she was “really the right person to score a superhero movie,” since nothing in her filmography bore any resemblance to previous “Batman” movies. But when she read the script, which touches upon “subjects that are so much deeper and quite current,” she realized she was indeed a perfect fit. Watch our exclusive video interview with Guðnadóttir above.

Laura Poitras became a rock star of the documentary world with 2014’s Oscar-winning “Citizenfour,” an explosive and definitive account of the Edward Snowden story that brought Poitras’ investigative filmmaking to a global audience. Variety has learned exclusively that seven new cast members have been added to the first season of the series, which is titled “Them: Covenant.” Shahadi Wright Joseph, Alison Pill, Ryan Kwanten, Melody Hurd, Javier Botet, and Percy Hynes White have all been cast as series regulars, while Derek Phillips has been cast in a recurring role. Joseph had a breakout year in 2019, starring in both Jordan Peele’s “Us” and the remake of “The Lion King.

If you’ve seen a Sean Bean movie or television series over the last decade then chances are high you’ve watched a Sean Bean character die. The actor’s career is full of characters who have not survived to the end of the story, so much so that a 2011 YouTube compilation of Sean Bean character deaths went viral with nearly 2 million views. In a new interview with The Sun, Bean said his infamous history of dying onscreen has changed the way he considers agreeing to a film or television role. The actor has started turning down roles in which his character will die, but not out of an ego-driven desire for more screen time.
“I’ve turned down stuff. I’ve said, ‘They know my character’s going to die because I’m in it!’” Bean told The Sun. “I just had to cut that out and start surviving,...

Behind-the-scenes featurettes have long enumerated the many obstacles any movie or TV show has had to overcome to reach the theater or TV screen. But few films faced hardships as severe as those overcome by “Driven,” the real-life hero-to-zero story of automaker John DeLorean (played by Lee Pace) and his misadventures with ex-con pilot-turned-FBI informant Jim Hoffman (Jason Sudeikis). Directed by Nick Hamm, “Driven” was in its first days of principal photography in Puerto Rico in September 2017 when Hurricane Maria was bearing down on the island.
Line producer René Besson grew up in South Florida and has survived a few hurricanes in his day, even getting the Jason Statham action vehicle “Homefront” through 2012’s Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana. Familiar with the trajectories of weather patterns, he was closely watching Maria’s progress the night before landfall on the Caribbean isle.
