This AFI thesis film takes a very simple story and does amazing visual and emotional things with it. Stories of grief often succumb to easy sentiment, but this film moves the viewer (at least this one) with its highly artistic and complex treatment of the pain of losing a parent, while maintaining its sense of mystery. "The Day That" is unpredictable and daring and one of the best short films I've ever seen. I wouldn't be surprised to see the filmmakers produce major work in the near future.
