In coordination with The Hollywood Reporter‘s list of the most important people in podcasting, the industry’s leaders were asked to identify the sector’s biggest challenges, as the no-longer-so-new medium enters its third decade. And while podcasting seems to have bounced back from last year’s slowdown, there are still plenty of forces holding it back, including questions around discoverability, the advertising model and the incorporation of video elements.

SmartLess, Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, On Purpose with Jay Shetty and Normal Gossip are among the titles in contention for the 2024 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards.

The category, which will be voted on by fans from Feb. 5 through Feb. 18, also includes popular podcasts Crime Junkie, The Daily, My Favorite Murder, New Heights, The Retrievals and Scamanda. Las Culturistas, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, took home the top prize last year.

Other competitive awards span 29 categories, including comedy, crime, news, tv and film, sports, food and business.

In the Icon Awards categories, which honor those who have made groundbreaking contributions to the industry, Wrongful Conviction hosts Maggie Freleng and Jason Flom will both be honored with the 2024 Social Impact Icon Award. Jonathan Goldstein, host of the Heavyweight podcast, will be honored with the 2024 Pioneer Icon Award.

In the wake of making controversial statements about Jews, Nazi Germany and the nation’s divided political climate back in February 2021, Carano was essentially dismissed from The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm released a statement at the time, saying “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Ben Shapiro hasn’t shared the sharpest commentary on “The Last of Us.”

Following the groundbreaking third episode of the viral HBO series, the conservative pundit took to Facebook (via The Independent) to share his criticisms about the “Brokeback Zombie Farm” premise.

“It is about two gay dudes who meet and have a relationship in which one grows strawberries for the other, and then they die by not being killed by zombies,” Shapiro captioned, citing the standalone episode titled “Long, Long Time” starring Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as a couple at the start of the apocalypse.

“One gets cancer and decides to essentially euthanize himself,” Shapiro said. “And gay Ron Swanson decides that he is also going to commit suicide at the same time because of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ or ‘Romeo and Romeo’ in this particular case.”

Shapiro added, “It’s all really well produced and it’s beautifully shot.

Gina Carano went on The Ben Shapiro Show to continue to unpack the recent events surrounding her firing from Disney+’s The Mandalorian — particularly her relationship with her former costar Pedro Pascal.

As reported earlier, the actress was fired from the Lucasfilm and Disney series after she took to social media to, as Lucasfilm described it, post “abhorrent” material that compared the current divided political climate in the U.S. to Nazi Germany. This caused “#FireGinaCarano” to trend and eventually, she was.

In the interview with Shapiro, she talked about how Pascal wasn’t fired for posting a 2018 tweet where he compared undocumented children in cages in the U.S. to Jewish people in concentration camps. Shapiro points out how it did seem like a double standard that Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t take similar action with Pascal as they did with Carano.

“I adore Pedro,” Carano said in the interview.

Since being fired by Disney off the “Star Wars” spinoff series “The Mandalorian” earlier in February, MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano has remained a subject of endless fascination in the media. Ben Shapiro has some issues with the direction Disney is taking the Star Wars series in. During a recent episode of The Ben Shapiro Show, the conservative political commentator objected to the idea of the franchise introducing more heroines because it is, at its core, intended for men.

“I know that Disney kind of imagined in years and decided that they were only going to have female heroes from now on,” Shapiro said, “which is absurd because Star Wars is essentially a little boy’s property.” Listeners have found his comment objectionable, as it excludes the franchise’s female fanbase. It also goes against the spirit of the films themselves, which posit the tolerant Jedi against the authoritarian, singular Sith.

The 21st Century Fox-owned cable-news outlet said Shapiro would host a four-episode series slated to run during the run-up to the 2018 mid-term elections. The series, “The Ben Shapiro Election Special.” will air for four consecutive weeks on Sundays between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. starting September 23.

“Ben is a rising star in conservative political commentary and we are excited to add his signature style and well thought out viewpoint to our pre-election weekend lineup,”said John Finley, senior vice president of development and production, in a prepared statement.

In early 2011, Glenn Beck thrived in conservative media. Once a little-known anchor for Hln, he found his voice on Fox News, running neck-in-neck with Sean Hannity in the ratings and trading jabs with liberal icons like Jon Stewart.
