In coordination with The Hollywood Reporter‘s list of the most important people in podcasting, the industry’s leaders were asked to identify the sector’s biggest challenges, as the no-longer-so-new medium enters its third decade. And while podcasting seems to have bounced back from last year’s slowdown, there are still plenty of forces holding it back, including questions around discoverability, the advertising model and the incorporation of video elements.
What are the biggest challenges facing podcasts right now?
Rachel Maddow, Ultra
None of the apps are great. We don’t just need curation and charts, we need rational organization, and a meritocratic way for the best and most relevant shows and episodes to circulate efficiently. It’s hard for me to understand why we’re still saddled with such uniformly clunky, unintuitive user interfaces at this point.

There’s only one topic in politics right now, and it’s all about Joe, as Bill Maher noted at the top of his show, then concluded in his “New Rules” closing editorial with a crystal clear statement: “He is not going to be the Democrat candidate in 2024.”
“What a time to be in America,” said Maher in his opening monologue. “I don’t know what to tell you. It’s harder to get this guy to pull out than Nick Cannon.” He then noted, “It’s like a horror movie you watch through your fingers.”
Maher said that every appearance now by Biden is characterized as “make or break,” saying, “It’s what it was like to be on the last tour with Glen Campbell.”
For those who insist that withdrawing from the presidential race has to be Biden’s choice, Maher added, “which is kind of like letting...

Moviegoers flocked to cinemas last weekend for the highly anticipated release of two of the year’s biggest movies – Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. But conservatives have slated Barbie for being, among other things, too ‘woke’, anti-men and even … Chinese propaganda.
Is the outrage real or is it just another example of politics employing a culture war to rally the base? Jonathan Freedland and Amanda Marcotte try to figure it out

“Tech giants like @YouTube, @Facebook, @TikTok_US, and—until @ElonMusk wrote a check—@Twitter, flagging, banning, throttling, shadow banning, and demonetizing us is a constant occurrence,” tweeted Daily Wire co-ceo Jeremy Boreing in a thread last month. The thread revealed what Boreing called a Big Tech “cancel blitz” against the company, including YouTube’s demonetization of Matt Walsh’s channel after the firebrand repeatedly stated that men are men and women are women when referring to people claiming otherwise. The company responded by putting “The Matt Walsh Show” on Twitter. In its first 28 days on Elon Musk’s platform, the show had 7.4M video views, 24M impressions, and its new account grew by 140,000 followers.
The move was so successful that DailyWire+ announced Tuesday it will be launching its entire slate of top-ranked shows on Twitter starting May 30. DailyWire+ is the sixth largest podcast publisher in the U.S. according to Podtrac,...

Exclusive: With The Mandalorian season 3 dropping this Wednesday, and our hero Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) headed to the Mandalorian home planet of Mandalore with dark saber in hand, how will the show deal with the departure of Gina Carano’s fan fave bounty hunter character Cara Dune?
In the wake of making controversial statements about Jews, Nazi Germany and the nation’s divided political climate back in February 2021, Carano was essentially dismissed from The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm released a statement at the time, saying “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
The actress was promplty fired from her agency UTA at the time with Hasbro halting the manufacture of Cara Dune action figures.

Ben Shapiro hasn’t shared the sharpest commentary on “The Last of Us.”
Following the groundbreaking third episode of the viral HBO series, the conservative pundit took to Facebook (via The Independent) to share his criticisms about the “Brokeback Zombie Farm” premise.
“It is about two gay dudes who meet and have a relationship in which one grows strawberries for the other, and then they die by not being killed by zombies,” Shapiro captioned, citing the standalone episode titled “Long, Long Time” starring Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as a couple at the start of the apocalypse.
“One gets cancer and decides to essentially euthanize himself,” Shapiro said. “And gay Ron Swanson decides that he is also going to commit suicide at the same time because of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ or ‘Romeo and Romeo’ in this particular case.”
Shapiro added, “It’s all really well produced and it’s beautifully shot.

Gina Carano went on The Ben Shapiro Show to continue to unpack the recent events surrounding her firing from Disney+’s The Mandalorian — particularly her relationship with her former costar Pedro Pascal.
As reported earlier, the actress was fired from the Lucasfilm and Disney series after she took to social media to, as Lucasfilm described it, post “abhorrent” material that compared the current divided political climate in the U.S. to Nazi Germany. This caused “#FireGinaCarano” to trend and eventually, she was.
In the interview with Shapiro, she talked about how Pascal wasn’t fired for posting a 2018 tweet where he compared undocumented children in cages in the U.S. to Jewish people in concentration camps. Shapiro points out how it did seem like a double standard that Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t take similar action with Pascal as they did with Carano.
“I adore Pedro,” Carano said in the interview.

Since being fired by Disney off the “Star Wars” spinoff series “The Mandalorian” earlier in February, MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano has remained a subject of endless fascination in the media. Capitalizing on that and seeking to expand her collaboration with The Daily Wire, Carano sat down for a special episode of “The Ben Shapiro Show” this weekend to talk about what went down behind the scenes in the lead-up to her firing and what’s next for the actress.
Carano’s firing occurred after an Instagram post in which she compared being Republican in the current U.S. political climate to being Jewish during the Holocaust. Carano told Ben Shapiro that she didn’t expect the post to be controversial and that her message was misunderstood. She said she was “inspired by the gentle spirit of the Jewish people going through that time,” adding, “When I posted that...

Ben Shapiro has some issues with the direction Disney is taking the Star Wars series in. During a recent episode of The Ben Shapiro Show, the conservative political commentator objected to the idea of the franchise introducing more heroines because it is, at its core, intended for men.
“I know that Disney kind of imagined in years and decided that they were only going to have female heroes from now on,” Shapiro said, “which is absurd because Star Wars is essentially a little boy’s property.” Listeners have found his comment objectionable, as it excludes the franchise’s female fanbase. It also goes against the spirit of the films themselves, which posit the tolerant Jedi against the authoritarian, singular Sith.
“The truth about what makes the Star Wars universe interesting is the Dark Side of the Force,” Shapiro told a fan who asked him what he’d like to see...

In early 2011, Glenn Beck thrived in conservative media. Once a little-known anchor for Hln, he found his voice on Fox News, running neck-in-neck with Sean Hannity in the ratings and trading jabs with liberal icons like Jon Stewart.
Then, after a brutal and sustained advertiser boycott, Fox News fired him. New York Magazine reported that Fox News chief Roger Ailes worried Beck’s conspiracy theories had almost “engulfed” the network. Around the same time, a reality show star named Donald Trump began making regular appearances on “Fox & Friends.” You know how that turned out.
The different fortunes of Beck and Trump almost perfectly illustrate the unpredictable ups and downs of life in the public eye. In the years since Trump’s unlikely rise, one-time outsiders have climbed by clinging to his coattails. And one-time stars of the right have slipped.
