Exclusive: In the first major sale of the year, Lionsgate has pre-emptively purchased the big concept earthquake short story After Shock for a sum in the mid-six-figure purchase-price range. At the center of all this is Brandon Sklenar, poised to headline movies after a breakout turn in It Ends With Us and the imminent second season of Taylor Sheridan’s 1923, in which he plays Spencer Dutton.
Four suitors chased the After Shock deal with different actors attached and the deal closed within 24 hours of when Verve put it in the marketplace. Lionsgate insiders claim the number was lower.
The 35-page short story written by Aaron Jayh will be produced by Todd Lieberman and Alex Young for Hidden Pictures and Scott Glassgold for his newly launched film banner 12:01 Films. Sklenar is also expected to be involved in a producing capacity.

Kristen Stewart makes her recorded music debut with “Who Laughs Last?” a new collaboration with the L.A.-based band, Lord Huron.
Stewart drives the song with a spoken-word monologue delivered across several verses, her noir-ish tale of a long, searching, late-night drive floating over a propulsive groove. Stewart’s vocals are interrupted only when Lord Huron frontman Ben Schneider jumps in to deliver the wailing chorus, “I’m gonna leave that city far behind and get a long, long way from there/I’ve got a burning feeling deep...

Producer Scott Glassgold has launched 12:01 Films, a production company which aims to identify, grow and produce creator-driven IP, primarily through short stories as the foundational launching point.
Verve, which represents Glassgold, helped establish the new production company. Over the last two years, Verve and Glassgold have closed 19 short story sales, ushering in a short story IP boom that 12:01 intends to remain at the forefront of.
That boom, Glassgold says, began with “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch” by Matt and Harrison Query. “It felt like this amazingly fresh, unique genre piece. And I knew immediately that there was a place in it for film and hopefully beyond.” He showed the Reddit short story to Verve’s David Boxerbaum and Adam Levine, who shared his enthusiasm. Things moved fast from there.

In the early days of January, Universal Pictures closed the first major Hollywood deal of 2024 by pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Pictures, as well as Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment. Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul, is on board to write the screenplay adaptation of his own 50 page short story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. Now Deadline reports that Universal has scored another Colin Bannon deal, pre-emptively purchasing his short story thriller package Don’t Look, with Janelle Monáe in talks to star and M3GAN, Malignant, and The Nun 2 writer Akela Cooper writing the screenplay, based on an unpublished Bannon short story.

Akela Cooper (M3GAN, Malignant, The Nun 2) has been set to adapt the screenplay for a new Universal horror movie based on a Colin Bannon-penned short story, Don’t Look. Per Deadline, the mysterious new horror film will star Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion, Antebellum).
Don’t Look is based on Colin Bannon’s unpublished short story, giving us not a single clue in terms of plot, and the logline for the Universal feature remains under wraps at this time.
Bannon is on a hot streak. Last month, the writer made a Universal deal for his horror short story Long Lost, produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Pictures, Scott Glassgold, and his Ground Control Entertainment. It hardly seems real, but pirate action-adventure Skull and Bones is an actual finished game you can go buy and play right now, 11 years after Ubisoft first started production on the title and seven years since it was unveiled at a 2017 E3 presentation (remember those?). The open-world title you’ll get out of the box emphasizes naval battles, ship building, and exploration, but the game infamously changed shapes multiple times during its long, tortured development cycle, with false starts and delays turning it into one of the most troubled Aaa productions of the last decade.
Skull and Bones began life as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag before Ubisoft turned the project into a full-blown Mmo spinoff called Black Flag Infinite to add a live service component on the ship combat mechanics fans loved from its predecessor. But those were just two iterations of the game.

Moments into Founders Day, the latest film by co-writer/director Erik Bloomquist, two small-town teens, Allison Chambers (Naomi Grace) and Melissa Faulkner (Olivia Nikkanen), discuss the seemingly inevitable end of their high-school romance as they take a stroll on a desolate, nighttime bridge. Little do Allison and Melissa know, though, but they’re not in an indie teen drama or straight-to-streaming comedy. They’re right smack in the middle of a calendar-themed slasher and said slashing, dicing, and mallet-wielding masked killer shows up out of nowhere, leading, in turn, to the obligatory desperate fight for survival for Allison and Melissa against the killer. Not surprisingly, their encounter with a masked killer doesn’t go well. Allison somehow manages to survive, mostly...

The slasher movie Founders Day is headed exclusively to movie theaters on January 19, 2024, and the official trailer for the rated “R” slasher has sliced our way this afternoon.
Watch the official trailer for Founders Day below.
In this “bold political slasher” from the Bloomquist Brothers, a small town is shaken by a series of ominous killings in the days leading up to a heated mayoral election.
As accusations fly and the threat of a masked killer darkens every street corner, the residents must race to uncover the truth before fear consumes the town.
“We’re very happy to be partnering with the team at Dark Sky who know and love the power of genre cinema like we do,” said the Bloomquist brothers. “As the chaos of modern politics rages, The Founder is primed and ready to be unleashed on American audiences.”

Earlier this week, we learned that director Erik Bloomquist‘s slasher movie Founders Day has secured a North American distribution deal with Dark Sky Films, and the company is planning to give it a theatrical release sometime in the first quarter of 2024. In preparation for that release, the movie has also now secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Founders Day has been rated R for “strong bloody violence, language, and some sexual references.” So it delivers pretty much what you expect to see from a slasher movie.

Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series, featuring the intriguing sports agent-turned-detective, has captivated readers for nearly 30 years with its standalone detective thrillers and compelling protagonist. Despite the popularity of the Myron Bolitar character, he is notably absent from Harlan Coben's Shelter series on Amazon Prime Video due to licensing issues and Coben's exclusive deal with Netflix. The exclusion of Myron Bolitar in the series does not rule out the possibility of future appearances, but given the exclusive contracts with different streaming platforms, it is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
The Myron Bolitar series is author Harlan Coben's most famous work, but the legendary reluctant detective is conspicuously absent from Harlan Coben's Shelter series. Publishing his first novel back in 1990, Harlan Coben has amassed a bibliography of gripping thrillers that have helped to make him one of the most prolific authors of the modern era. Neil Young’s Chrome Dreams will soon become a reality. The musician’s long-lost album, originally intended for release in 1977, will finally see the light of day on August 11th, 2023 via Reprise.
Chrome Dreams consists of studio recordings from 1974-1976, including two previously unreleased versions and four tracks never-before-released on vinyl. Other recordings of some of these songs are surely familiar to seasoned Young fans, but this 12-track collection is billed as “exactly how Young perceived it and has a sense of monumentality about it that conveys a place in history.”
The vinyl release of Chrome Dreams is a three-sided LP with an etching on side four; pre-orders are ongoing, and you can check out the full tracklist and original recording dates of each song below.
This weekend, Young is set to kick off his first tour in four years. Tickets to select dates are available here.

Night at the Eagle Inn is the latest film from Erik and Carson Bloomquist. We’ve been following these filmmakers since way back in 2015 and their first short film The Cobblestone Corridor. Since then they’ve released films like Long Lost and Ten Minutes to Midnight; and now the pair have one of the most anticipated films on last year’s festival circuit making its digital debut in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Since the only thing harder than making a hit film is making another one, the question is, can they keep their streak alive?
Sarah Moss and her twin brother Spencer (Taylor Turner; Lillith) are on a mission to solve a dark mystery from their past. They were born prematurely, their mother died during childbirth.

While Grammy nominations usually include many commercial picks, the awards pride themselves on being decided by music industry peers judging quality over popularity, even banning chart-related messages in FYC ads recently. So we often can expect a couple of critical darlings to get nominated across genres and sometimes even in the general field. Nominations this past year for Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III” in Album of the Year and Phoebe Bridgers in Best New Artist are examples of how far acclaim can take you at the Grammys. Granted, we don’t know how this will hold up with no more nomination review committees giving a boost to lower-profile acts. Nonetheless, there are a lot of lauded artists who might surprise us this year.

The film draws inspiration from classic horror tales brought to life by Stephen King, The Twilight Zone, and other forgotten late night horror anthology programs.
Erik Bloomquist (Long Lost) directed from a screenplay co-written with Carson Bloomquist.
"Ten Minutes To Midnight, a vampire flick for the #MeToo era, will hit theaters on September 17th (including drive-ins), Virtual Cinema on October 15 and traditional VOD/Digital on January 19, 2021 from 1091 Pictures.
