As a long-time fan of science fiction fantasy both good and bad, I was really surprised to find Superstition on the down low on Syfy channel on demand. I have always enjoyed good Sci-Fi with an original story plot and so many of them duplicate each other whether it's about runes or spells or culture based mythology. Superstition's mythology and relics come straight out of Africa and Caribbean.
My first black horror was Ganja and Hess. Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead) played Dr. Hess Green a wealthy black anthropologist doing research on the Myrthians, an ancient African nation of blood drinkers. He is stabbed with a Myrthian ceremonial dagger, and through a confusing circumstance he becomes a vampire. Then there's Blacula and Eddie Murphy's version A Vampire in Brooklyn, Wesley Snipes Blade, Will Smith, Agent J, "Men In Black," Samuel L Jackson as Mace Windu, "Star Wars", Lando Calrissian, "Empire Strikes Back", Morpheus, "The Matrix"
Superstition pacing reminds me of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Random events seem unrelated and later Some of the people aren't people. Jasmine Guy as Aunt Nancy/ Anansi the trickster god(dess) was fun and the halfling drunk James, the towns denizens show great promise as the show develops. I loved the thought that there is an outpost in the south with a family of watchers familiar with deep hoodoo and magic. Been several black stories and movies centered in Black floor that did not get the play screen The Van Peebles Clan, Mario Van Peebles (who placed Isaiah and also the director) whose first role was a sex scene at the age of twelve in his father Melvin Van Peebles 's seminal film Sweet Sweet Back's Badass Song (1972). They are well known as being filmmakers, directors, and writers willing to take risks.
In science fiction you're allowed to enjoy listening and learning about something detached from your own day-to-day life. And in the twenty-first century there are more roles for African American actors in science fiction than ever before. Granted there are some people that are on comfortable with that, but progress is progress. I have long enjoyed multiracial science fiction starting from Ganja and Hess back in And of course in the Star Wars series more and more different ethnicities are showing up. As a the 70s which was a controversial movie about vampires that lasted in theaters about a month as there was nudity and sex and it was loosely based in African culture.
Or The Matrix that had both Gloria Foster as the oracle, and Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus. Lifelong lover of Science Fiction it was few and far between programs that are reflective that are not pay limitations of white people's impressions of magic alternate is very one-dimensional and actual people who believe for the traditions and I know that whoever was attention to any actual practitioners okay now Superstition is good because the actors are evolving it is in the first season
For those of us who love Supernatural remember the first season when the boys were finding their way to being the characters that we know today. Sam and Dean Winchester are epic there is no way to jumpstart a new spinoff series using the same formula in the city and get the passion which we were all looking for.
This is enjoyable on a different way. like Eve's Bayou or the Skeleton Key both of which reflected and African American folklore and folk traditions. I think we should give it a chance
