Good: During the scene at Santa Anita Racetrack they show racing at other racetracks one being Del Mar. Del Mar would never be racing while Santa Anita was running. The two tracks alternate their meets. If you follow the sport you will notice that quite easily.
Shot over the course of nine days completely on location and without permits.
References Michael Mann's "Heat," and heavily influenced by Kubrick's "The Killing" and Mann's "Thief"
Used two locations from Michael Mann's "Heat" which include the train station from the opening of "Heat" which is the same station that Dakota Kennedy arrives on in the opening sequence. Also, Bob's Big Boy is used in a lunch scene with two FBI agents and was the same location that Neil McCauley (Deniro) meets up with his crew before taking down the bank in "Heat."
The Santa Anita Racetrack that appears in the film was the same location used for Michael Mann's HBO show "Luck" with Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Farina. That show was canceled after too many horses died on the track while filming the show. Coincidentally, the track was shut down for a short time after THIEVES was shot there because too many horses had died there. But not as a result of the production which shot unbeknownst to the track administration without permits. And no animals were harmed during the production.
