Halsey is turning her attention to screenwriting with a new dark comedy series, titled “Bloodlust,” for Amazon MGM Studios.

The singer and songwriter, born as Ashley Frangipane, will serve as creator, writer and executive producer for the new series, which is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, TheWrap has learned.

The series has been in the works for years from Halsey, her manager, Anthony Li, and Mark Friedman. Friedman, who recently served as a consulting producer for HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy,” is attached to the series as showrunner and executive producer.

Friedman and Li will executive produce “Bloodlust” alongside Ti West, who will direct the series. West, who recently completely his “MaXXXine” trilogy, has directed a number of TV series, including “Them,” “The Exorcist,” “Wayward Pines,” “Outcast” and “Chambers.”

Singer & songwriter Halsey is adding screenwriter to her resume. Variety has learned exclusively that the platinum-selling artist is currently developing a dark comedy TV series at Amazon Prime Video.

Halsey, whose given name is Ashley Frangipane, is set to serve as the creator, writer, and executive producer of “Bloodlust” for Amazon but is not going to star in the show. Ti West is attached to direct and executive produce, with Mark Friedman onboard as executive producer and showrunner. Anthony Li, Halsey’s manager, also executive produces. Amazon MGM Studios will produce.

Exact plot details are being kept under wraps. The project has been in development at Amazon for some time with Halsey, Li, and Friedman attached, but no details had emerged until now.

Nicolas Cage as Superman? Yep, it happened—well, kind of. DC fans watching The Flash got a wild multiverse cameo of Cage battling a massive alien spider as Clark Kent himself. But here’s the twist: Cage’s Superman dream wasn’t just a random CGI throw-in. It was a callback to Hollywood’s most prominent “what-if” stories.

Thanks to TikTok and solid buzz, the animated adventure about the swashbuckling cat enjoyed nine lives on the big screen. Ticket sales barely declined week over week, and “The Last Wish” ended its run with $186 million domestically — 15 times its opening weekend — and $481 million globally.

(The average film has a 3 or 4 multiple — industry parlance for the ratio of final gross to opening weekend.) “Puss in Boots 2” and “Migration” hold the two highest animated multiples of the past 20 years.

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.

Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

DC Studios is adding to its newly rebooted cinematic universe with a live-action film adaptation of “Teen Titans,” tapping screenwriter Ana Nogueira to pen the feature.

The news comes only four months after Nogueria was reported to be writing “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for Warner Bros. Discovery’s comic book adaptation division. An actor and playwright, Nogueira has been involved with DC for several years now, having been originally tapped by the previous regime to write a “Supergirl” movie that would’ve seen Sasha Calle reprise the character after debuting in last summer’s “The Flash.” That project was scrapped after James Gunn and Peter Safran took on leadership roles, setting plans for a rebooted continuity of on-screen DC Comics adaptations. But the pair have maintained a relationship with Nogueira, which is further growing with “Titans.”

Nicolas Cage is a character, and he's played some of our favorite characters to date. He's also been playing the role of dad for over 30 years. Nicolas has two sons, the first of whom was born in 1990, and now he's even taken on a bigger gig: grandpa to his four grandchildren. When Rocky Morton's and Annabel Jankel's 1993 film "Super Mario Bros." first hit theaters in May of 1993, it was immediately greeted with skepticism by Nintendo fans. The live-action adventure took characters and some of the more notable iconography from Shigeru Miyamoto's popular video game series and repurposed them into a bizarre, dystopian tale about a parallel universe, the evolutionary fate of dinosaurs, and fascism. The whimsical, cartoonish fairy tale elements of the 1985 game were absent, replaced by something steely, dank, and coated in athlete's foot-style fungus. Fans were concerned that the movie wasn't a faithful adaptation of the game, and it was rejected on this basis for many, many years. 

Reviews weren't kind either. The film currently holds a mere 28% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Gene Siskel called it one of the worst movies of 1993. It didn't help that "Super Mario Bros." was also a notoriously troubled production...

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment released the newest trailer "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," based on the world of the Mario video game franchise. We haven't seen a Mario Bros. movie since the monstrosity (I say that with love) that was the 1993 live-action "Super Mario Bros.", and before that, the Japanese anime film "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" from 1986. 

This time around, we have Chris Pratt voicing the diminutive Italian plumber instead of voice actor Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario, his brother Luigi, and so many other characters since 1992. (Martinet will reportedly lend his voice in a cameo role in this movie.) “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is getting a slightly earlier release date than expected. Universal announced Tuesday that the Nintendo and Illumination animated film will hit theaters April 5, rather than April 7.

The bump will give it an early boost at the box office ahead of the Easter holiday weekend. It now falls on the date of the Jewish holiday Passover.

“Super Mario Bros.” will simultaneously release wide in the United States and in 60 international markets. The film was originally scheduled to release in December 2022.

Mario is powering up his release date.

Universal and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will now hit theaters around the world two days earlier than expected, the company announced Tuesday. The movie’s new release date is Wednesday, April 5, instead of its original Friday, April 7.

In addition to going wide domestically, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will release in more than 60 markets around the world, including China, Australia, France Germany, Italy, Brazil Mexico and the U.K. and Ireland.

There are around 10 markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe opening on a variety of dates in April and May, Universal also announced. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will release in Japan on April 28, timed to the Golden Week Holidays.

First announced in September 2021, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was originally supposed to hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2022, but was delayed a few months later to 2023.

Universal/Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has become the latest Hollywood title to secure a release date in China. The big-screen spin on the iconic videogame franchise will hit Chinese cinemas on April 5, in time for Ching Ming Festival and in step with some other international markets as well as two days before the domestic release on April 7.

China has lately made a shift from last year and been regularly handing out release dates for studio movies, and with more notice. Word of Super Mario Bros’ date comes five weeks ahead of time, allowing runway for marketing and promotion.

The film about the famed videogame plumbers, kart drivers and squashers of turtles is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.

The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. Universal and Nintendo are co-financiers with global release handled by Universal.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is bringing the beloved Nintendo franchise to cinemas in April, Chris Pratt’s Mario voice and all! We’ve already seen multiple trailers teasing the animated adventure from Nintendo and Illumination. However, a new poster for the film is here to announce the date of the film’s final trailer!

The Super Mario Bros. poster features Mario (Chris Pratt), Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen) driving along Rainbow Road while avoiding Bob-ombs and Spiney Shells. Each character is piloting a vehicle from the ultra-popular Mario Kart video game franchise, as floating islands and stars hang in the sky. The poster is another example of how far Nintendo and Illumination are willing to go to make the Super Mario Bros. Movie a colorful romp through the Mushroom Kingdom.

Much has been made of titles being quietly removed from HBO Max over the last few week, but while the number of films departing the service in September is substantial, at least subscribers have a heads up.

As is the case every month, various movies are due to leave HBO Max in September, and below we’ve got the full list of which films are leaving and when so you can prioritizing some viewing options. Noteworthy removals include the 2021 Warner Bros. thriller “The Little Things” starring Denzel Washington (leaving Sept. 16), the 2020 “Freaky Friday” horror riff “Freaky,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films, the “Lethal Weapon” franchise, “Super 8,” “Tootsie” and the Nancy Meyers classic “The Holiday.”

For many decades, the four-day Memorial Day weekend has been a banner time for people to flock to movie theaters. While many schools around the country are still in session and people still have work, it’s the official kick-off of the summer for many, which is why studios frequently will grab the weekend for their potential summer tentpoles. In the past 15 years, seven movies have grossed more than 100 million over the four-day weekend, but Steven Spielberg’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” held the holiday weekend record since opening in 1997 until “X-Men: The Last Stand” came along in 2006.

The past two years have seen a far reduced Memorial Day, although last year, “A Quiet Place Part II” and Disney’s “Cruella” showed possible signs of movie theaters returning a few months after the top two markets, New York City and Los Angeles, reopened. The two movies grossed 83.5 million between them over the four-day weekend.

The animated Super Mario Bros. movie from Illumination and Nintendo and based on the video game franchise is being pushed back from a holiday 2022 release to now open over Easter weekend 2023.

The untitled animated feature film will hit theaters on April 7, 2023 after originally being slated for release on Dec. 21 of this year. Universal is releasing the movie, and it will also now open in Japan on April 28, 2023.

Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s upcoming adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. video game series has been delayed to 2023.

The Super Mario Bros. adaptation was originally set to release on Dec. 21, targeting a theatrical run through the holiday season. The film will now hit theaters on April 7, 2023 in North America. A Japanese release will follow on April 28.

Super Mario Bros. series creator and Nintendo leader Shigeru Miyamoto announced the change in release date through Nintendo’s social media on Monday evening.

“After consulting with Chris-san, [producer Chris Meledandri,] my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023,” Miyamoto wrote. “My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

The “Super Mario Bros” animated movie has set a voice cast that will include Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi.

Nintendo announced the full cast today as part of their #NintendoDirect event, and it also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, Sebastian Maniscalco and special cameos from Charles Martinet, who is the original voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario and more.

Pratt and Day will play the title characters Mario and Luigi, the two heroic plumbers who must make their way through the Mushroom Kingdom and rescue Princess Peach (Taylor-Joy) from the evil Lord Bowser (Black). Among the other key cast, Key is playing Toad and Rogen is playing Donkey Kong.

The “Super Mario Bros.” movie arrives in theaters on December 21, 2022, from Universal, Nintendo and Illumination Animation, which is behind the “Despicable Me” and “Minions” movies.

Talk about a level up — the new animated feature film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. has bagged an A-list voice cast.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day have been tapped to play the titular video game siblings Mario and Luigi, respectively, two Italian plumbers plunged into a world of foes and fantasy in the beloved Nintendo game series. Anya Taylor-Joy will play Princess Peach, the royal blonde who has inspired millions of Halloween costumes and rap lyrics, often found in the clutches of supervillain Bowser, who will be voiced by actor Jack Black.

Rounding out the are Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad (who does a mean cover of Sia’s “Chandelier”), Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Chris Meledandri’s top-grossing Illumination label is making the film, which will roll out in theaters on Dec.

A couple of things have caught our eye in February’s Netflix UK line-up, first, the German dystopian sci-fi Tribes of Europa. After the success of sci-fi series Dark, the streaming service invested in a bunch of new German-language series, including the mega-successful historical Barbarians. Tribes was among them, and tells the story of a group of siblings in 2074, separated after a global disaster that leaves Europe riven by warring factions. Also sounding like a good time is South Korean comedy Space Sweepers, about a spaceship crew tasked with cleaning up intergalactic trash.

There’s also the arrival of Parks and Recreation in full – perfect for a lockdown rewatch, new stand-up, all of The Vampire Diaries, and Jason “It’s a megalodon” Statham in The Meg.

Lil Yachty’s dramedy series “Public Figures” has moved to HBO Max for development, Variety has learned exclusively.

The half-hour series was originally set up at Quibi last year, but moved over to HBO Max in the wake of Quibi shutting down. This marks the first announcement of a show previously set up at Quibi finding a new home now that the Jeffrey Katzenberg-Meg Whitman streamer has announced it will cease operations.

The creative team behind the show remains intact, with Yachty still attached to star in and executive produce the show, which is loosely inspired by his life.

Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Et and Cars are among the films unveiled Wednesday for the Walmart Drive-In, curated by the Tribeca Film Festival, that will turn the giant retailer’s parking lots at 160 locations into outdoor theaters starting August 14.

Walmart said the nationwide event will feature 320 showings through October. Drew Barrymore will be the virtual host for all events and make a surprise in-person appearance at one location. Peter Berg, Jennifer Garner, LeBron James and Chrissy Metz will also appear in person or virtually at select showings.

The venture follows a Tribeca solo drive-in series that featured 30 iconic films in locations in major markets nationwide over 20 days.

ABC has given a pilot order to a comedy written by Jimmy Kimmel, Shawn Vance and Daril Fannin.

Called “Adopted,” the trio also executive produce the single-camera project.

Aquaman isn’t like the other DC Comics superheroes, so it seems only right that his big-screen solo show should have a personality all its own — which, in the hands of “Furious 7” director James Wan, it does.
