Aussie crime series offer a gritty and specific twist on the classic police procedural, showcasing Australia's unique storytelling capabilities. Australian crime dramas blend English sardonic tone with American plotlines, set against visually stunning oceanic backdrops for a captivating experience. These shows, like Deadloch and Mystery Road, explore diverse narratives with dark humor, societal issues, and captivating mysteries, worth a watch.
A great Aussie crime series features every aspect of what normally goes into a classic police procedural but with a specificity and grittiness that only the country/continent can produce. While Australia is an excellent setting for post-apocalyptic productions, there is plenty more to the country than barren wastelands filled with souped-up cars and men in masks praying to gasoline gods. Australia's thriving crime series industry has shown the country can produce just as thrilling crime drama TV shows as its British and American counterparts.

The streaming market in Australia and New Zealand will soon become even more cluttered and competitive as AMC Networks announced its direct-to-consumer services Sundance Now and Shudder will launch in both countries later this year.
Specialising in genre entertainment covering thrillers, suspense and horror, Shudder will cost $4.99 a month or $49.99 per year. AMC did not disclose the fees for Sundance Now, which costs $US6.99 a month in the Us.
The expansion builds on both services’ growth in subscribers in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria.
“Our continued expansion of Shudder and Sundance Now speaks to our success in offering audiences exclusive and original content they can’t get anywhere else along with an unparalleled user experience,” said Paul Rehrig, executive VP of business development for AMC Networks.
“We look forward to introducing both services into these new markets as consumer demand for our curated streaming offerings continues to grow.

A very bad man does very great things in a new series for FX and, in the process, has restored my faith in Australian television.
Yes, Australian.
This week I set out to review a Sundance Now series called Dead Lucky, created in Australia and starring Rachel Griffiths. Two things of note here — Sundance Now usually gets its hooks into really good international fare and Griffiths is a very good actress (and it was a chance to see her with her natural Australian accent).
It didn't go well.
Dead Lucky is just flat-out bad. It's a tired cop ...

After a record number of entries, Australians in Film announced Charmaine Bingwa as the winner of this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship.
The Australian/Zimbabwean actor is the first woman of color to be honored with the scholarship and the 10th winner of the award which was founded five months after Ledger’s death. The scholarship honors Ledger’s legacy and is awarded to an actor who exhibits distinctive and unique potential. It offers assistance for young and emerging Australian actors to kick-start their careers, break into Hollywood or train internationally.
“I’m completely taken aback and so honored to be 2018’s winner of the Heath Ledger Scholarship,” said Bingwa after receiving the award. “I heard the other day someone say that the most powerful currency you have is the impact you have on other people and I think Heath epitomizes that. Heath personally taught me what the power of a performance can do.
