The second adaptation of Siegfried Lenz's novel with the same title, published in 1968 in Germany. The first adaptation was in Deutschstunde (1971).
In addition to locations in northern Germany, the film was also shot in Denmark, since no filming permit was issued in Germany for all of the Wadden Sea and most of the dunes.
After the end titles, there is a abstract scene in black and white of 2 minutes.
