Cristin Milioti Talks First Emmy Nomination For ‘The Penguin’, Teases “Special, Strange And Wonderful” Next Film
Image
Here’s to new beginnings for actor Cristin Milioti, who earned her first Emmy nomination Tuesday for her role as Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin.

Though the actor is no stranger to starring in TV shows including in Modern Love, Made for Love and Black Mirror, which have all earned nominations, she admitted to keeping her jitters at bay by “purposefully keeping” her phone at the bottom of her bag, unchecked, until the nominations reveal ended this morning.

In addition to Milioti’s recognition, The Penguin garnered 24 nominations including for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Colin Farrell, Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Cinematography in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Directing in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Contemporary Hairstyling and Makeup, and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup.

So, what exactly went through Milioti’s mind once it sunk in that she had scored her first Emmy nomination?...

NCIS: Origins Star Shares The Veteran Advice That Mark Harmon Gave Him
Image
NCIS: Originsstar Caleb Foote shares the advice that franchise veteran Mak Harmon gave him. Harmon returns to narrate and executive produce the prequel, which debuted in October, and focuses on a younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) in the early 1990s. Gibbs works alongside an unlikely team, which includes Foote as Special Agent Bernard "Randy" Randolf.

Even though the prequel is focused on Gibbs, zeroing in on the pivotal NCIS character and highlighting a different side to him, NCIS: Origins season 2 is poised to continue highlighting the people who helped him along the way. Randolf, the so-called golden boy, is far from it. Though he's capable, he's also still evolving and growing.

In recent comments to Entertainment Tonight, Foote revealed that Harmon encouraged him to be himself. In the quote below, Foote also praises Harmon and his veteran status as a performer and as part...

The Penguin's Cristin Milioti Recalls Her On-Screen Debut in Legendary HBO Series 19 Years Later
Image
Cristin Milioti took on what could be her most popular role yet by playing Sofia in The Penguin, a spinoff of the hit film The Batman. The role brought her back to HBO nearly two decades after she made her on-screen debut on one of the premium cabler's most successful TV shows.

In 2006, Milioti debuted with her on-screen role in the sixth season of The Sopranos, and she reflected on the part in a new interview with Variety. At the time, Milioti "couldn't afford HBO," and she hadn't even seen the show when she landed her role. She also had no idea just how legendary the crime drama series would become, imagining that she wouldn't have been able to get through the shoot if she had known.

"I hadn’t seen it because we couldn’t afford HBO," she said. "I was already really nervous just because that was such a big set,...

Cristin Milioti Praises Robert Pattinson’s Dark and Emotional Take on Batman
Image
Cristin Milioti recently shared her thoughts on Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and she had nothing but praise for the actor’s take on the iconic role.

During a recent interview, Milioti was asked about her feelings toward Pattinson’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne, and she opened up about how much she appreciated the emotional depth he brought to the character.

She said she was really drawn to how Pattinson played a version of Batman that felt raw and broken. “I love his interpretation because he really leans into the blurring of the line between someone who’s, like, so damaged, going out looking to feel things,” she said.

Pattinson’s Batman, first introduced in the 2022 film directed by Matt Reeves, was a darker and more emotionally complex version than fans had seen before. Instead of focusing on Bruce Wayne’s billionaire persona or flashy gadgets,...

A24's long-awaited take on The Backrooms may have finally found its cast
Image
A film adaptation of the viral found-footage films created by YouTuber Kane Parsons was announced to be in development at A24 back in 2023, with minimal updates since. But it looks like A24 is finally preparing to move full steam ahead with the project as a new report from Deadline suggests casting is underway. According to the outlet, The Penguin star Cristin Milioti and Chiwetel Ejiofor (who was so very charming in the recent Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy) are in talks to co-star.

Reps for A24 have declined to comment on the news, so it sounds like if the two stars are circling these roles then the deals have not yet been signed or confirmed. Parsons will direct the film from a script by Roberto Patino. A24 is adapting alongside James Wan's Atomic Monster banner, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps.

The Backrooms remains a mysterious project for the studio...

Actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cristin Milioti are reportedly in discussions to join the cast of The Backrooms, an upcoming horror film from A24, according to industry insider Jeff Sneider.

The movie is based on the viral YouTube series created by Kane Parsons, who is set to direct the feature-length adaptation.

The Backrooms originated as a short film uploaded to YouTube in January 2022 by then-16-year-old Kane Parsons, known online as Kane Pixels. The video, presented in a found-footage style, depicts a person who accidentally enters an endless maze of empty, yellow-lit rooms, encountering unsettling phenomena and entities.

The short quickly gained popularity, amassing over 66 million views and inspiring a series of follow-up videos.

Cristin Milioti Demands ‘Justice’ for Shelved Max Series ‘Made for Love’
Image
Cristin Milioti wants someone to dig through the archives and bring back Made for Love. While speaking to journalists, including TV Insider, in support of Black Mirror Season 7’s release, the actress was asked to comment on the dark comedy series, which ran for two seasons on HBO Max but was subsequently scrubbed from the streamer’s library. The show featured her alongside Billy Magnussen (another “Callister” returnee) and Ray Romano. Milioti starred in the series as Hazel Green, a woman in a 10-year miserable marriage to a tech billionaire named Byron Gogol (Magnussen) who flees to her father’s (Romano) home and learns she has a tracking device embedded in her brain. Season 2 concluded with her returning to Bryon’s lair in an effort to save her father’s life and facing an all-new technological threat. If that situation sounds a bit like an ...

Cristin Milioti Shares Her "Heartbreak" Over Canceled 'Made for Love'
Image
Cristin Milioti is returning to the USS Callister after eight years thanks to Black MirrorSeason 7 and its finale episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity." A lot has happened since the previous installment in Season 4, with Milioti blowing up in popularity thanks to her role as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, not to mention the great indie rom-com, Palm Springs. She also starred in the two-season wonder Made for Love on HBO, a very Black Mirror-adjacent show about a tech bro billionaire (very Robert Daly-esque), who kinda-sorta imprisons Milioti's character. The show also starred Billy Magnussen, who stars alongside Milioti in the Black Mirror episodes, and Made for Love featured Ray Romano's best performance to date. It was sadly canceled after Season 2, and even removed from Max for streaming.

Speaking to MovieWeb, Milioti opened up about the pain of losing that show in more ways than one. "You know, I...

Cristin Milioti Joins Elizabeth Olsen in FX Drama Pilot ‘Seven Sisters’
Image
Cristin Milioti has been cast in the FX drama pilot “Seven Sisters,” Variety has learned.

Milioti will appear alongside previously announced lead Elizabeth Olsen in the pilot, which was first announced in March. The pilot is said to follow a young mother (Olsen) who begins hearing a mysterious voice, forcing her large family to confront long-buried secrets. The pilot is slated to begin production in May.

Milioti’s casting will no doubt delight comic book media fans, as Milioti and Olsen have both led projects for DC and Marvel respectively. Olsen plays Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a Scarlet Witch, in the MCU, while Milioti recently delivered a celebrated turn in the HBO series “The Penguin” as Sofia Falcone. Variety‘s Clayton Davis recently predicted the performance will land Milioti her first Emmy nomination.

Cristin Milioti To Star Opposite Elizabeth Olsen In FX Drama Pilot ‘Seven Sisters’
Image
Cristin Milioti has joined the FX drama pilot Seven Sisters, starring opposite the previously announced Elizabeth Olsen.

In Seven Sisters, from FX Productions, a large, tight-knit family begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets.

We understand Milioti will play the sister of Olsen’s character in a leading role.

Seven Sisters is executive produced by Will Arbery, who wrote the pilot; Sean Durkin, who will direct it; and Garrett Basch. If the pilot goes forward, it would mark Basch’s fifth series for FX, where his company Dive has a long-standing first-look deal, following Devs, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows and Sterlin Harjo’s upcoming Tulsa noir drama starring Ethan Hawke.

Milioti most recently starred opposite Colin Farrell in Matt Reeves’s HBO miniseries The Penguin,...

The Penguin Star Cristin Milioti Auditioned To Play A Key Wicked Character
Image
You might know Cristin Milioti from her knock-down, drag-out performance as Sofia Falcone (turned Gigante) in the HBO original miniseries "The Penguin" — but did you know that she also auditioned for one of the biggest movies of 2024? If you weren't aware of that until right now, I'll forgive you ... because Milioti did not book the role.

In a conversation with Deadline on the red carpet ahead of the SAG Awards — which took place in Los Angeles on February 22 and where Milioti was nominated for her role in "The Penguin" but lost out to "Baby Reindeer" breakout Jessica Gunning — Milioti was asked about the fact that she apparently auditioned for "Wicked." Not only that, but Milioti was quite candid about the whole thing. "I did a really bad job," the acclaimed actress confessed.

"How could you possibly be bad?" the interviewer asked — and so, Milioti answered honestly. "Well, there was a...

The Penguin's Breakout Star Was In 1 of HBO's Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Shows (& They're More Alike Than You Think)
Image
Quick LinksWhat Was Cristin Milioti's Role in Made for Love? What Happens to Hazel In Made for Love Season 2?

The following contains spoilers for Made for Love and The Penguin, which are both streaming on HBO Max.

It's undeniable that HBO's The Penguin is a resounding success. Fans raved about the series and critics praised it. It won a Golden Globe for Best Actor, in this case, for Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobb. However, a lot of heavy lifting was done by the show's breakout superstar: Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone.

Milioti has been nominated for a few awards, and her character's journey on The Penguin was an uphill battle against toxic masculinity. In fact, it was eerily similar to another hit HBO series, Made for Love. It also shows how much range Milioti has outside of shows like How I Met Your Mother, which had her in a more supporting role.

Along with Glatzer, the series will be executive produced by Gina Mingacci (“Killing Eve”) and is one of many high-profile Silicon Valley-set dramas put in development, but the first to receive a series order. A writer on such shows as “Succession” and “Better Call Saul,” among others,...

NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 8 Review: Randy Is Finally Unleashed
Image
NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 8, "Sick as Our Secrets," announces the arrival of Randy Randolf. Audiences have never seen Randy, or actor Caleb Foote, quite like they do in this installment. The storyline adds a whole new dimension to Randy's character, making him more than the office golden boy or a source of comic relief. It's exactly what the show needs as it continues to flesh out the world around a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

"Sick as Our Secrets" tells the story of a priest who is shot and killed during confessional. When it becomes clear that he was filling in for a colleague, Randy and Gibbs are tasked with protecting the intended target -- and trying to get him to name the killer. But the episode is truly about the survivor's guilt that Randy lives with, and how that connects to his relationship with Gibbs, just two episodes before audiences...

Before 'The Penguin,' Cristin Milioti Was Proudest of '30 Rock'
Image
Cristin Milioti earned a whole new fanbase in 2024 thanks to her scene-stealing performance as Sofia Falcone in the HBO series, The Penguin. Don't call it a breakout role, though — the wonderful actor has developed ardent supporters over the years thanks to her self-aware comedy skills, naturalism, and ability to lean into intensity without ever seeming phony or melodramatic. Seriously, if you haven't been a fan of her in the past, where were you? Surely her iconic role in the faux Star Trek episode of Black Mirror, "U.S.S. Callister," rings a bell, or her infamous role in How I Met Your Mother. Catherine Sacrimoni in The Sopranos? Betsy Solverson in Fargo Season 2? DiCaprio's first wife in The Wolf of Wall Street? Come on already.

While all of these projects are surely memorable and important in different ways to Milioti, the actor recently reflected on her career and quickly pointed...

These legends of laughter continued to light up the entertainment world, each carving out a legacy that rivals their time on the show.MEGAPeter Boyle Mega

Before Everybody Loves Raymond, Peter Boyle appeared in Joe (1970), The Candidate (1972), Young Frankenstein (1974) and Taxi Driver (1976), as well as on and off-Broadway. Fans adored him in the role of Ray and Robbie's deadpan, slightly cranky dad, Frank.

However, off-screen, he was nothing like his coarse character. Instead, he was a friendly, warmhearted guy.

"He made me feel welcome," said Ray Romano. "He made me feel part of the club."

Shortly after the sitcom wrapped, Boyle died of multiple myeloma and heart disease in 2006 at age 71.

The Penguin Fan Art Gives Sofia Falcone a Hilariously Unexpected Makeover
Image
If The Cat in the Hat ever receives another live-action adaptation, the powers that be should know who to cast as the titular Dr. Seuss character. Fan-favorite digital creator BossLogic has returned with a new piece of art that imagines The Penguin star Cristin Milioti as The Cat in the Hat.

After a behind-the-scenes image of Milioti from the set of The Penguin was shared online, a DC fan noted that the Sofia Falcone actor "low-key" looked like Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, who was previously played in live-action by Mike Myers in a 2003 adaptation that is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. After BossLogic noticed the fan's comment, he was spurred into action, using his talents to transform Milioti into The Cat in the Hat. The final product is both hilarious and a bit unsettling. Check out Milioti as The Cat in the Hat below.

Considering her comedy roots, audiences may have been surprised by Cristin Milioti's career-defining performance as serial killer Sofia Falcone in HBO's The Penguin. The Batman spin-off sees a huge pivot for Milioti, who was, until now, most well-known for her roles in a series of rom-coms from How I Met Your Mother to Palm Springs to, most recently, HBO Maxs Made for Love. Based on Alissa Nutting's novel, Made for Love is a blend of Black Mirror and Olivia Wildes Dont Worry Darling, a comedic and often disturbing look at the way modern love and divorce converge with rapidly evolving technology. Cristin Milioti leads the impressive cast, which includes Billy Magnusson and Olivier award-winner Noma Dumezweni, as she attempts to escape her suffocating marriage to a tech CEO determined to revolutionize true love.

The Penguin Episode 4 Earns Near-Perfect IMDb Rating
Image
Premiering just a month ago, HBO's The Penguin has earned consistently high ratings from its viewers, even scoring an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. DC's newest television installment doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon, either, with the release of episode 4 last weekend only solidifying The Penguin's legacy by receiving a near-perfect score on IMDb.

"Cent'Anni," the fourth episode of the gritty, mobster-centric miniseries, follows Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs) as Sofia Falcone, the supposedly psychopathic serial killer going head-to-head with Oz Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) for control of Gotham's criminal underworld. Milioti's performance in past episodes has already earned her significant acclaim from fans, so it's no wonder that the episode focused on her backstory achieved the highest ratings The Penguin has seen so far. Approximately 10,000 viewers on IMDb gave the episode a whopping 9.5/10, beating the previous one, Bliss, which earned only a 9.1/10. Overall, the show sits at an 8.8/10 after 35,000 ratings,...

Sofia Falcone Fans Should Check Out the HBO Cult Classic, Made for Love
Image
Fans of Max's The Penguin are amazed by Colin Farrell's transformation into the titular villain, but more surprising to many is Cristin Milioti's performance as Sophia Falcone. Milioti plays the daughter of Gotham City's crime king, Carmine Falcone, with such intensity that it's eerie and fascinating to watch. Milioti proved years ago she's a powerhouse on screen in Made for Love on HBO Max. Starring alongside Billy Magnussen and Ray Ramono, Milioti played Hazel Green, a woman married to a wealthy tech genius who desperately wants to escape his controlling clutches.

Made for Love, adapted from a novel by Alissa Nutting, is a mix of science fiction and dark comedy that lasted two seasons. Canceled under unfortunate circumstances, Made for Love remains an under-appreciated show that highlighted Milioti's star power years ago.

Cristin Milioti Auditioned for 'A Lot of Superhero Stuff' Before Landing The Penguin Role - Main Image

How I Met Your Mother star Cristin Milioti has been killing it as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, and this is her first comic book role after multiple artsy parts in series like Black Mirror and Palm Springs.

As it turns out, Milioti has actually tried very hard over the years to get into the superhero genre, but she just hasn’t been having any luck until the Batman spinoff started coming around.

Cristin Milioti on Landing Sofia Falcone

In a recent interview with Showsha, Milioti talked about wanting to land a superhero role ever since she was a kid. She says, “It’s like a dream of a lifetime. I’ve dreamt of being, not just a villain, but like a Batman villain since I was so small, since I started watching movies.

“I saw… six times in theatres”: Cristin Milioti’s Batman Craze Began Decades Before ‘The Penguin’
Image
Cristin Milioti has ventured across a lot of genres ever since her professional career started somewhere in the 2000s, pulling diverse roles ranging from sitcoms to thrillers to action pieces to rom-coms. Her exclusive role is in the currently raging critically commended R-rated miniseries The Penguin, which features her starring as Sofia Falcone alongside Collin Farrell’s Oz Cobbs.

While her other roles also hold significant resonance with her, this latest one, in particular, is a bit closer to Milioti’s heart than the rest. This is because ever since she was a child, she has long been one of the greatest fanatics of the Caped Crusader and his character arcs of all time, including all the heroes and villains he allies and battles with throughout his lifetime.

Pretty Little Liars Season 3 Not Happening As Max Cancels Reboot Following Summer School's Cliffhanger Ending
Image
Pretty Little Liars season 3 is not happening, as Max canceled the reboot three months after a cliffhanger ending. Hailing from Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon-Bring, the fourth outing in the overall franchise had a slasher movie focus, paying homage to classics of the subgenre with a Pretty Little Liars reboot cast that included Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, and Mallory Bechtel.

TVLine has confirmed that the rebooted Pretty Little Liars has been canceled by Max after two seasons. The news comes exactly three months after the conclusion of the reboot's second installment, Summer School, which wrapped up with a major cliffhanger. Max released a statement reacting to the cancellation, with the streamer thanking Aguirre-Sacasa, Bring, and the cast and crew for their efforts:

While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Pretty Little Liars, we are so grateful to our co-creators,...

‘The Penguin’ Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who in Matt Reeves’ Gotham?
Image
Gotham is expanding in “The Penguin” and that means a lot of familiar names, but new faces. In some cases, it means new names too.

Premiering on HBO on Thursday, September 19, “The Penguin” takes place just a few weeks after the events of “The Batman,” but centers on crime boss Oz Cobb — better known as the Penguin. With Gotham effectively in ruins, it’s a race to see who can control the streets, and he thinks his time has come.

That becomes a bit harder, though, when Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone, unexpectedly returns from Arkham Asylum.

We won’t spoil anything, but here are the major players you’ll need to keep up with.

How to Make a TV Studio Disappear
Image
Paramount Global’s decision to shutter its namesake TV studio means the loss of dozens of jobs, the shifting of several series to another banner and a consolidation of power within the company’s two remaining TV studios — at least until a potential Skydance-Paramount merger is complete.

Paramount TV Studios ceased operations Aug. 16 as part of heavy layoffs at the parent company. Paramount is cutting 15 percent of its U.S.-based employees in an effort to lop $500 million off its balance sheet. The studio’s current productions, including the Prime Video hit Reacher and Apple TV+’s Time Bandits, along with upcoming shows Cross (Prime Video), Before and Murderbot (both at Apple TV+) and any projects in development, will move to corporate sibling CBS Studios.

What the shutdown won’t affect, at least in the immediate aftermath, is Paramount+, the streaming platform that Paramount is looking to make sustainably...

Where Have You Seen “The Penguin” Star Cristin Milioti Before?
Cristin Milioti at an event for The IMDb Studio at Acura Festival Village (2020)
Actress Cristin Milioti is capturing attention in her new role as mafia family member Sofia Falcone, starring alongside Colin Farrell in Max’s upcoming series “The Penguin,” one of two comic book adaptations she’s appearing in this year. In May, Hulu announced she will join the cast of “Hit Monkey” for the animated show’s second season, premiering on July 15. But this is hardly the first time the actress has starred in a major movie or show. If you’ve seen the trailer new teaser for “The Penguin” and are wondering what you’ve seen her in before, here are some of her top credits on IMDb so far.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Cristin Miliotti may not be the first actor you think of when you recall Martin Scorsese’s 2013 exploration of greed ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ but the actress plays an integral role in the story of fraudulent stockbroker Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. As Teresa Petrillo, Militoi brought to life Belfort’s first wife, who was eventually replaced by Naomi Lapaglia (Margot Robbie), aka The Dutchess.

Palm Springs

Andy Samberg’s 2020 time loop comedy was embraced by critics and fans alike, with a 7.4 star rating on IMDb. But Samberg’s Nyles would have been even more lost without Cristin Militoi as Sarah, a fellow wedding guest and love interest who gets trapped with him in a time loop, repeatedly attending the same wedding for somewhere between 40 and 40 million years.

Black Mirror

“Black Mirror” has featured many talented actors, from Daniel Kaluuya and Bryce Dallas Howard to Aaron Paul and Letitia Wright. Cristin Milioti became a “Black Mirror” alum in 2017 when she starred opposite Jesse Plemons in the Season 4 opener, “USS Callister.” In the Emmy-winning episode, Milioti plays a programmer trapped in a virtual world by her reclusive coworker harboring secret possessive fantasies.

Made for Love

“The Penguin” won’t be Cristin Milioti’s first time on a Max original series. In 2021, the actress starred in “Made for Love,” a sci-fi dramedy about a tech billionaire’s ex who discovers a tracking device implanted in her brain.

Notable TV Roles

Throughout the 2010s, Milioti also appeared in recurring roles on several popular shows you may have watched. She played the eponymous Mother in “How I Met Your Mother,” the coked out stockbroker Whitney in “The Mindy Project,” and as cancer-stricken Betsy Solverson in Season 2 of “Fargo.”

Colin Farrell's Batman Villain Starts A Gotham Mob War In The Penguin Trailer
Image
If you're still feeling down in the dumps over "The Batman Part II" being delayed a full year while Warner Bros. figures this DC s**t out, I come bearing good news. "The Penguin," a spin-off series centered on Colin Farrell's crime boss Oswald "Oz" Cobb, aka The Penguin, is coming later this year and it looks to serve as a quasi-sequel to Matt Reeves' Fincher-esque, noirish take on the Caped Crusader. This will also mark the second time the titular Batman villain's rise to power in Gotham City's criminal underworld has been covered on the small screen after "Gotham," a deliriously ridiculous show in which, at one point, one of the series' heroes uncovers a corpse in a refrigerator and immediately pops the cap off a nice cool beverage on the top shelf, reasoning, "If I don't drink it, forensics will."

"The Penguin," by comparison, clearly strikes a...
