The film is an adaptation of a fan fiction entitled "Trek VS Wars" that allowed characters from both Star Trek and Star Wars franchises to fight in a plausible conflict. The characters of Janeway and Darth Vader were later adapted to Captain Jovan and Emperor Kao-Neshi to avoid copyright infringement and explore a wholly original concept.
Prior casting and shooting was finished for a live-action version, edited into a trailer, and used for a Kickstarter campaign.
