New month, new titles! With January underway, Max has released dozens of library titles, including “The Breakfast Club,” “Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” and much, much more.

But the streamer is preparing for a big month from all of its brands, including the Bleacher Report, the platform will carry multiple big match-ups, including the NBA Rivals Week games on Jan. 23 (New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers at LA Clippers) and Jan. 25 (Boston Celtics at Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings at Golden State Warriors).

When eight people at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, these detectives need to get on the case quickly.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.

But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. As you may recall, it was announced back in 2018 that Roxanne Benjamin would be scripting a remake of the 1984 horror movie Night of the Comet for Orion Pictures, but it’s been quite some time since we’ve heard a peep about the project. Thankfully, Slash Film provides a fresh update.

The sci-fi thriller follows Glen (Vincent Kartheiser), who is stranded by two flat tires on a rainy night and must seek help at a nearby house. A trio of hot young stars have been set for director Roxanne Benjamin’s “Fall Into Darkness,” an English-language reboot of the 2014 Spanish thriller “La Cueva.”

“Servant” star Nell Tiger Free, “Gossip Girl” reboot breakout Thomas Doherty and “One Upon a Time in Hollywood” actor Lorenza Izzo have joined the cast. This re-imagined version was scripted by David Bruckner and Nick Tecosky.

Romero’s Day of the Dead in 1985, Greg Nicotero has not only been a leading pioneer in his field but, during the past decade, has also taken on the roles of executive producer and director on one of the most successful horror TV series of all time, The Walking Dead, along with its spin-offs.

The success of Shudder’s Creepshow — the horror anthology series based on Stephen King and George A. Romero’s 1982 cinematic homage to EC Comics — led to the genre streaming outlet quickly greenlighting a second six-episode season. As showrunner/director/writer Greg Nicotero tells it, cameras were literally about to start rolling on that second season when the deadly coronavirus pandemic roared around the world, shutting down not just most daily life but all film and TV production for the immediate future.

“I mean, we were one day away from shooting Creepshow season 2 when the big pause button got pushed,” says Nicotero on the phone from his home, where he remains like so many of us in lockdown. “So we were ready to go. We’re just waiting for the word to get back out in the world again.”

In one sense, however, Nicotero is glad that the shutdown occurred before production actually got started.

I had the opportunity to watch the first episode of the series, which I really enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to watching the rest of them. When I was growing up, I had a blast watching George Romero and Stephen King’s Creepshow horror anthology films! I just loved the creepy and strange stories that were told and I’m excited to see more of these stories in the upcoming revival series coming from Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead).

Thanks to Shudder, we now have a complete line-up of the episodes that the first season will entail along with new cast members, which include Jeffrey Combs, Kid Cudi, Big Boi, Bruce Davison, Jeffery Combs, and DJ Qualls. Harmony Korine’s comedy The Beach Bum, starring Matthew McConaughey, has secured a UK and Ireland theatrical deal with nascent distributor Blue Finch Film Releasing.

Rocket Science is handling international sales on the film, which premiered at SXSW in March and was then released in North American by Neon where it has grossed $3.5m to date.

Korine’s sixth feature, and his first since 2012 hit Spring Breakers, follows the misadventures of the rogueish Moondog (McConaughey) around the tropics of Cuba and Florida. Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill and Martin Lawrence co-star.

Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). No one is going to confuse the lead character of Roxanne Benjamin’s “Body at Brighton Rock” as some sort of hardened heroine. As timid park ranger Wendy, star Karina Fontes is already out of her depth when the retro-leaning horror feature kicks off, and that’s long before she stumbles upon a dead body in a remote patch of her state park. Things only get worse from there, as Benjamin’s feature directorial debut follows Wendy on a crash course to do the wrong thing at every possible opportunity.

“She does a lot of bone-headed things,” Benjamin said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “When people are like, ‘Ooh, she does so much stupid shit!’ I’m like, ‘Oh shit, I did all of those things.’ Besides finding the dead body, I’ve done literally all the things that happen in the movie.”

While she’s been producing indie horror for years now, and has also directed several anthological segments in projects like Southbound and Xx, Body at Brighton Rock marks the feature film debut for Roxanne Benjamin. Centered around a young woman named Wendy (Karina Fontes), who works for a national park, but finds herself wholly unprepared when she comes across a dead body in the wilderness. Tasked with staying with the corpse overnight until the proper authorities can tend to the deceased, Wendy is forced to confront her own fears and find an inner strength within herself while alone in the wilderness.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Benjamin, who discussed how her own experiences working at a national park inspired the concept of Body at Brighton Rock, and she also chatted about establishing the visual style for the film and collaborating with Fontes, who is front and center throughout the entire story.

At a time when so many low-budget indies seem resigned to streaming, Roxanne Benjamin’s fun and forgettable “Body at Brighton Rock” feels ready-made for a Friday night on your couch. It’s a total slumber party of a movie, told with plenty of skill, even more potential, and an utter lack of preciousness from its delightful opening moments to its enjoyable shrug of a last-minute twist. A large part of that appeal is owed to the throwback vibe of a movie that eschews straightforward nostalgia in favor of a subdermal longing for a more innocent time. Benjamin is a rising star with deep roots in the horror world (previous credits include producing “V/H/S” and directing segments in anthology offerings “Southbound” and “Xx”), but even her bright future is tied to the past (upcoming projects include a remake of the 1984 cult classic “Night of the Comet”).

Filmmaker Roxanne Benjamin spends a tad too much time on the character-establishing setup during the first act of her “Body at Brighton Rock.” Once she has lured her audience into joining her plucky but ill-prepared protagonist into a secluded area of a picturesque state park, however, the first-time director efficiently ratchets up the suspense — gradually, arrestingly — and doesn’t let up until she springs a final twist that plays like O. Henry by way of Stephen King.

Taken as a whole, her movie resembles nothing so much as an episode of some ’60s anthology series, à la “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” that traditionally spun stories at a measured pace while sustaining tension and raising mortal stakes. Indeed, a judiciously trimmed version of “Body at Brighton Rock” would not have been out of place among the hour-long episodes produced during the 1963 season of the original “The Twilight Zone.”

The SXSW 2019 Film Festival is over and we're rounding up what we saw, what we loved, and a few things we think you can skip.

Magnolia Pictures has debuted the first trailer for an indie horror survival thriller film titled Body at Brighton Rock, the second feature film following Southbound from filmmaker Roxanne Benjamin. The story follows a novice park ranger who discovers a body, and must spend the night guarding a potential crime scene on a remote mountain trail as night descends. Karina Fontes stars as Wendy, with a cast including Casey Adams, Emily Althaus, Miranda Bailey, Martin Spanjers, Matt Peters, Susan Burke, John Getz, and Brodie Reed. Plus a big bear! Or so it seems... Perhaps this trailer shows too much, but it's also just trying to get our attention in the swarm of so many films. This just premiered at SXSW this month to some mixed but mostly good reviews, one describing it as "an intriguing cinematic rumination on the effects of isolation and fear.
