Julian Dennison (Godzilla vs Kong), Minnie Driver, James Rolleston (The Dark Horse) and Erana James are set to star in New Zealand coming-of-age tale One Winter from directors Paul Middleditch and Hamish Bennett.

The title is based on a story by Middleditch, Keith Aberdein and Sonia Whiteman, with Bennett and Whiteman adapting the screenplay. Story is set in New Zealand in 1981 when the arrival of the South African rugby team sets off nationwide protests against apartheid and racism. Josh Waaka (Dennison), a 17-year-old boy of mixed race who has been a passive bystander all of his life, is suddenly forced to stand up for himself, his family and his future.

The film, which is set to begin shooting this summer in New Zealand, is produced by Emma Slade, Sandra Kailahi, Angela Cudd, Angela Sullivan and Alberto Marzan. Troy Lum is an exec producer. Blue Fox is launching international sales here in Cannes this week.

Guy Pearce and Te Kohe Tuhaka lead the cast of “The Convert,” an epic New Zealand-set action drama film being directed by Lee Tamahori. Mister Smith Entertainment is representing sales rights and will launch the project at the Cannes film market.

The story sees Pearce portray a lay preacher who arrives at a British settlement in 1830s New Zealand. His violent past is soon drawn into question and his faith put to the test, as he finds himself caught in the middle of a bloody war between Maori tribes. The script was written by Shane Danielsen (“Errors of the Human Body”) and Tamahori, after originating from a screen story by Michael Bennet (“Matariki”).

The producers on the film are Robin Scholes, Te Kohe Tuhaka, Andrew Mason and Troy Lum.

Arna Media, the Russian distribution company run by Nadezda Motina, has secured the rights to “Brother and Sister,” “The Tank,” “Little Allan – The Human Antenna” and “The Colors of Fire” for its theatrical pipeline.

Arnaud Desplechin’s family-drama “Brother and Sister” stars Marion Cotillard, Melvil Poupaud and Golshifteh Farahani. Cotillard and Poupaud play the titular siblings who, following the death of their parents, reunite after decades of silence. It is a companion film to Desplechin’s 2004 César award-winning movie “Kings and Queen.” The project is produced by Why Not Productions and is in post, set to be completed by May. Arna acquired the rights from sales agent Wild Bunch.

Rlje Films and the horror streamer Shudder have acquired the North American rights to “Great White,” a horror film about a killer shark starring “30 Rock” actress Katrina Bowden.

“Great White” is a horror, thriller and supernatural genre film written by Michael Boughen (“Dying Breed”) and directed by Martin Wilson in his feature debut. Rlje Films will release it theatrically this summer, and Shudder will premiere it on its platform later this year.

In “Great White,” a blissful tourist trip turns into a nightmare when five seaplane passengers are stranded miles from shore. In a desperate bid for survival, the group tries to make it to land before they either run out of supplies or are taken by a menacing terror lurking just beneath the surface.

Drafthouse Films is stepping back into the world of distribution after a five-year hiatus with the North American co-release of India’s Oscar entry, “Jallikattu.”

The company — which is the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema — is partnering with XYZ Films, which picked up the phantasmagorical “Jallikattu” for North America back in December. The title, which is Drafthouse Films’ first new acquisition since 2016, marks a new directive by the distributor to support emerging filmmakers.

“[‘Jallikattu’] blew us away because it felt like it was beamed in from another dimension and left a permanent imprint on our brain,” said Drafthouse Films in a statement shared with Variety.

XYZ and Drafthouse are planning a spring release that will include theatrical support, as well as all digital platforms along with a Blu-Ray edition of the film. Drafthouse parent company Alamo Drafthouse launched curated VOD platform Alamo on Demand in May.

With regular movie theaters still closed for the time being, digital releases have been giving us movie fans a much-needed respite these last few months, and we’ve got even more new films to look forward to get us through the next few weeks.

June’s Digital and VOD releases kick off on the 4th, with Shudder's streaming debut of the stellar documentary Scream, Queen! Distributor Nent Studios U.K., formerly Drg, has made its first drama acquisition since rebranding, picking up New Zealand fantasy action-adventure series “The Dead Lands.”

Nent Studios U.K. acquired the rights to the eight-hour series from New Zealand producer Gfc Films, which itself reclaimed the rights after the show’s former distributor Kew Media Distribution collapsed into administration earlier this year.

“The Dead Lands” was produced by Gfc Films for Tvnz and AMC’s Shudder Svod service and premiered on Tvnz earlier this year.

Set in a mythical Aoteoroa-New Zealand, “The Dead Lands” tells the story of a dishonored warrior who dies, but whose ancestors in the afterlife send him back to the world to find redemption and honor. The drama stars Te Kohe Tuhaka and Darneen Christian.

Dabangg, the hit 2010 Hindi-language feature starring Bollywood megastar Salman Khan, is set for an animated spin-off series after India and Singapore-based animation studio Cosmos-Maya struck a deal with Arbaaz Khan Productions. The series is inspired by Chulbul Pandey, the cop character played by Kahn in the film, and will run at two seasons of 52 half hours. The first season will go into production this year. With much of the world self-isolating and most cinemas closed, streaming services are becoming increasingly the focus of where people will access home entertainment. Giants like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are releasing new content all the time but horror specialist channel Shudder has decided to keep gore hounds entertained while stuck in their homes by extending their standard 7 day free trial period to 30 days if you use the promo code Shutin.

With this extra day in February (what sorcery is this?) you may think you have an extra day to do your own stuff, whatever. For we fans of Shudder and their lineup of horror, sci-fi and cult gems it means we have to wait one more day for their March schedule. With a raft of new streaming services coming our way this year, it’s impressive that Shudder continues to develop compelling content and a solid horror library to keep fans returning. Having already snapped up the rights to Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, they’ve now announced their full lineup of titles for February 2020, which includes new original series, shorts, and a lot of classic movies.

In terms of original series, Shudder have The Dead Lands on Thursdays through March 5th, with the show adapting a 2014 New Zealand film focusing on Māori mythology. The plot covers a warrior returning from the afterlife who has to contend with the spirits of the recently dead. Given Shudder’s confirmation of a second season for Creepshow, it’ll be fascinating to see what they do with this material as they increase their original series commitments.
