When it comes to playing characters who aren't quite human, Alexander Skarsgård has form. The eldest son of clan Skarsgård, Alexander has been a vampire in True Blood (and What We Do In The Shadows), a demon in The Stand, several clones in Infinity Pool, and even a billionaire tech bro *shudder* in Succession. And now The Northman star is about to play Murderbot, a bot who doesn't actually do murders, in Apple TV+ bound sci-fi thriller/comedy series Murderbot. Adapted by About A Boy directorial duo Chris and Paul Weitz from Martha Wells' bestselling Murderbot Diaries, Murderbot is due to hit our screens in May — and today Apple revealed our first look at the non-lethal droid. Check it out below:

Welcome to the latest instalment of our Dissected feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and looks back at Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).

First of all, credit where credit is due. The little cartoon of David that accompanies every Upfront this time is sporting a hat like Grim Jack and is captioned ‘Grim Dak’. I do love a good pun. We get a peak behind the creative process at Ci as here Dak outlines the duties of Jim Salicrup as Editorial Consultant. Now he doesn’t go big on detail, it is more a chance to pay tribute to a friend. That is something that always comes across in the pages of Ci, everyone who works on it seems like friends first, working colleagues second. The pair have known...

The Dcu’s canon has been a point of confusion ever since it was announced that The Flash was going to reboot the Dceu. There were plans for Michael Keaton’s Batman to serve in a NIck-Fury-esque sort of role within the Dceu, Batgirl was a major player, Supergirl was going to replace Superman, and more. It was certainly a confusing time.
When Gunn took over, it didn’t really become less confusing, just confusing in a different way. Gunn initially said that some things in the Dceu would become canon in the Dcu, but did not specify at first. It was clear to fans, however, that what would stay canon are the films that were popular and made money. Slowly, it was clear that The Flash would not be canon after it bombed, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom would not be canon after it also bombed but not quite as bad,...

James Gunn is putting on a pair of red pants, grabbing the Lasso of Truth, and lighting up the Bat-Signal, as the man behind Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy gets to work building a new DC Cinematic Universe alongside producer Peter Safran. The pair have unveiled some of their plans for this Phase 1 of this new endeavor, which they're calling, "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” Gunn has worked with DC characters before, having helmed 2021’s The Suicide Squad and the John Cena-led Peacemaker TV series.
Despite some confusion about what parts of the old Dceu — the one developed by Zack Snyder in movies like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman — are coming over to the Dcu, Gunn has made it clear that the animated show Creature Commandos is the official starting point for his continuity. Effectively The Suicide Squad with the training wheels taken off, Creature Commandos is...

A huge part of the draw to most superhero movies is their action, making it all the more disappointing when they fail to deliver a climactic final fight sequence. From the movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the many one-off films featuring DC characters, most comic book movies rely heavily on their fight scenes to draw audiences' attention. This focus on combat usually results in one final battle against the film's overarching villain to close out the story, pulling out all the stops for a memorable last battle.
The best comic book movie final fights are able to balance characterization with smooth editing, believable special effects, and creative uses of powers to maintain an exciting bout. Conversely, the worst finales in superhero movie history can be the result of a lackluster final battle, especially in films featuring otherwise great combat scenes. Both Marvel and DC have committed the sin...

James Gunn's Dcu can still bring back Will Smith's Deadshot and give him the Suicide Squad spinoff the actor originally wanted. From David Corenswet's Superman and Milly Alcock's Supergirl to The Brave and the Bold's Batman and a yet-to-be-cast Wonder Woman, the Dcu will introduce a new set of DC characters in both animation and live-action. However, various Dceu characters have survived the Dcu reboot — mostly those related to James Gunn's The Suicide Squad: John Cena's Peacemaker, Freddie Stroma's Vigilante, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, Sean Gunn's Weasel, among others.
The Suicide Squad was itself a soft-reboot of Suicide Squad. Characters such as Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang appear to be the same version of the characters in both movies, but The Suicide Squad doesn't directly reference the events of the first movie. Now that Dcu...

No live-action DC movie released so far has attempted what the fourth Dark Knight installment, Batman: Gotham Knight, achieved. To say that Christopher Nolan's highly-acclaimed The Dark Knight trilogy was incredibly influential for the superhero genre and Hollywood filmmaking as a whole would be an understatement. Not only did The Dark Knight trilogy offer one of the most beloved villain performances in Heath Ledger's Joker, but it also proved that comic book adaptations could thrive on the big screen as high-quality cinema.
Although Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy was a massive hit at the box office, its chances of becoming a cinematic universe were slim from the start. Nolan envisioned the trilogy as a grounded, self-contained story with a well-defined beginning, middle, and end. Hence, there were never plans for a fourth Dark Knight movie, and despite the passing of the torch teased in The Dark Knight Rises' ending sequence,...

DC has released some truly dark movies, but a few of them rank above the others due to their overall tone, major deaths, and more. All of the Dceu's movies were piled together as being extremely dark, which is not true. DC has had somber releases in recent years, but many of the shared universe's projects were more light-hearted in nature, with films like the Shazam! franchise, Blue Beetle, and the Aquaman movies falling into that designation.
Still, both before and during the Dceu, the comic book giant did really deliver a few very dark movies and events. Based on the projects announced for the new DC Universe's Chapter One, such as the upcoming Swamp Thing and The Authority movies, more dark feature films are on the way for DC. Before they arrive, a look back at DC's darkest movies so far can show how the upcoming DC movies...

There are a few things from comics that are better left outside of the mainstream audience’s minds. While there is some sillier stuff that gets adapted out for the sake of the story being palatable to the mainstream audience, there are also some…downright disturbing aspects of the comics that are left out…for the most part.
Deathstroke || Credit: The CW
Manu Bennet managed to deliver a great performance as Deathstroke, but there was one aspect of the character that the Arrowverse saw fit to adapt out, even if it showed up in some of the animated versions of the Dcu. Given that Slade is very famously a pe**phile in the comics, fans could rest easy that that part of the character was completely cut out in The CW’s version of the Dcu.

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5!A long-standing fan criticism is the sheer absurdity that no one, not even his closest acquaintances, can recognize Clark Kent as Superman, despite his flimsy disguise of glasses, a different hairstyle, and a mild-mannered attitude. And with the Man of Steel's newest civilian identity, this criticism becomes even more glaring, making it almost laughable that Clark still tries to maintain a secret identity at all.
Superman officially makes his debut in Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernndez, and Matt Hollingsworths Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5. This Elseworlds series, a sequel to the 1989 classic Batman: Gotham by Gaslight by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, reimagines fan-favorite DC characters in the 19th century.
In this world, Clark Kent remains the Kryptonian hero fans know and love, but instead of a mild-mannered investigative journalist, he's a bumbling yet beloved sheriff.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5!One of my favorite things about DCs Elseworlds imprint is the chance to see different versions of beloved characters like Superman reimagined across various alternate universes. While the main continuitys Man of Steel will always have a special place in my heart, his Gotham by Gaslight counterpart has officially taken the crown as my favorite Clark Kent.

While Superman remains the powerful Kryptonian fans know and love, he takes on a new civilian identity as Smallvilles bumbling yet beloved sheriff.

Warning! Spoilers for Absolute Power: Origins #3!Batman is one of the most popular comic book characters ever created, and I've noticed that DC Comics tends to inflate that reputation every chance the publisher gets by making him the most dangerous and powerful person in the room. This ego-inflation most recently led to a strange retcon as a major Suicide Squad moment is changed to prop up Batman even more.
The surprising retcon to the Suicide Squad was seen in Absolute Power: Origins #3 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse, and Steve Wands. This book details Amanda Waller's rise to absolute power in the DC Universe and goes over a few events that avid DC readers have already seen. One such event is Batman's assault on Belle Reve when he discovers the existence of the Suicide Squad, but the way this story retells the event is very different...

After seeing the first trailer for Marvel's Thunderbolts*, I'm very confident the upcoming movie will be far more than the "McU's Suicide Squad". Coming from Warner Bros. and the Dceu, 2016 and 2021's Suicide Squad movies feature collections of incarcerated criminals coming together to complete missions for the US government. While Thunderbolts* does appear to have some shared DNA concerning that general DC Comics' premise, I do feel that the upcoming MCU movie will be a much bigger affair across the board.
Coming from director Jake Schreier, Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* is set to debut a brand-new team of characters in the MCU, the majority of whom have been featured in past films. This new roster predominantly includes Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell's U.S.Agent, David Harbour's Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen's Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko's Taskmaster. DC had infiltrated the anime world way before it was the trend, and the DC adaptations continue to be popular among fans. From Batman Gotham Knights and Galactic Warrior Wonder Princess to Batman Ninja, several anime have been produced based on DC characters.

Filmmaker David Ayer continues to go back and forth on whether he wishes to #ReleaseTheAyerCut of Suicide Squad and, following the 2016 movie's recent 8th anniversary, he's shared some never-before-seen script pages.
As well as providing a greatly expanded version of the moment Joker uses the electroshock machine on Dr. Harleen Quinzel, we learn more about the moment Harley Quinn finally turns her back on the Clown Prince of Crime during the final battle with Enchantress.
We don't see what happens next after Joker threatens to kill her but know from previous leaks that Task Force X drove him off, finally freeing Harley from the twisted gangster's grasp.
In the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad, we were led to believe Joker died in that helicopter crash before making his surprise return in the movie's closing moments to break Harley out of Belle Reve. Warner Bros. decided Ayer's vision was too dark...

From penning Training Day (2001) to helming the one-two punch of End of Watch (2012) and Fury (2014), David Ayer has had the film industry in the palm of his hand on a couple of different occasions.

Their blood quest gives rise to a prototype Witcher in a conflict that brings about the “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merge to become one. Brown starred opposite Michelle Yeoh, Francesca Mills and Laurence O’Fuarain.
Most recently she appeared in the Itvx limited series You & Me, opposite Harry Lawtey and Jessica Barden, and, prior to that, Joe Barton’s Netflix limited series Giri/Haji in which she starred opposite Will Sharpe and Kelly Macdonald.

Dead Shot is a gripping cat-and-mouse thriller centered around a British sergeant who becomes the target of a revenge-driven Ira member after killing his pregnant wife. The movie is a throwback to crime thrillers of the past and features an ensemble cast including Aml Ameen, Colin Morgan, and Felicity Jones. Directors Tom and Charles Guard aimed to capture the intensity and visual language of films like Heat and The French Connection while incorporating contemporary themes like Brexit and Covid.
Dedication to duty leads to a vengeance-driven game of cat and mouse in Dead Shot. The movie centers on a British sergeant who is recruited to join a clandestine team to bring down Provisional Irish Republican Army sects in the U.K. after stopping a member from crossing the border, then becomes the target of said figure after having killed his pregnant wife during the confrontation.

Colin Morgan plays a retired Irish paramilitary in Dead Shot, who seeks revenge on British Sergeant Tempest after witnessing him kill his pregnant wife. Dead Shot sets a personal revenge tale against the backdrop of the conflict between Ireland and England, adding to the tension. The film explores the violence and unrest of 1970s London, using it as a backdrop for a cat-and-mouse revenge story, and the exclusive clip highlights Felicity Jones' character.
Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from the new action thriller Dead Shot. The movie is inspired by Steven P. Moysey's book, The Road to Balcombe Street. Michael O'Hara (Colin Morgan), a retired Irish paramilitary, is persuaded by his pregnant wife to run and escape a border ambush, but things go horribly wrong when he witnesses British Sergeant Tempest (Aml Ameen) shoot and kill her. Michael, now presumed dead, escapes and follows Tempest to London.

"I'm going after the soldier that killed Carol." "The man you want is working for the police." Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for Dead Shot, another new action thriller to enjoy. But this one finally has something unique to offer - it's set on the dark and paranoid streets of 1970's London, with some extra gritty chase scenes. Opening in the US on VOD in August. A retired Irish paramilitary witnesses the fatal shooting of his pregnant wife by an Sas officer. After outwitting the government, now wounded, and presumed dead, he escapes, taking his revenge to the streets. It looks like he catches up with the killer and might have a change of heart. "Raw and suspenseful, Dead Shot is an adrenaline-fueled thriller that will leave audiences weighing up the true cost of revenge." Just hope it's good. It’s a great testament to an actor when they can take a character who murders a pregnant woman in the opening scene, and make them human, and dare I say, likeable. But when it comes to British actor Aml Ameen, that’s hardly a surprise, as the talented performer’s career continues to go from strength to strength.
To mark the release of the aforementioned, dark thriller Dead Shot, we had the pleasure in speaking to Ameen via Zoom, as we speak about the challenges in playing a role of this nature, and the fulfillment of working with a complex, nuanced protagonist. He also talks about his directing career and his ambitions post-Boxing Day, while we speak about a rather big role he has coming up, playing Martin Luther King Jr in Rustin.

Dead Shot is a film directed by Charles and Thomas Guard. It stars Colin Morgan and Aml Ameen and features the always grateful presence of Mark Strong.
A film that takes itself quite seriously in a revenge romp with political undertones in Ireland.
Dead Shot Storyline
In the 1970s, a member of the Ira takes over an Active Service Unit in London after his wife is accidentally shot dead in Ireland. The unit’s mission is to cause chaos and destruction, while his personal aim is to hunt down his wife’s killer — an Sas captain, who is also hunting him.
Movie Review
A good opportunity to revisit the thriller genre with a well-constructed cinematic flavor and with intention, characters and a whole story to tell. It has a lot of style thanks to the setting and the climate of instability in which the plot is framed.

There’s a crunchy veracity to the script for this evocative story of two men on opposing sides of the Northern Ireland conflict
The recent 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement underscored how much the Troubles, and those many years of bloodshed, have receded into historical memory. With the wounds less raw, it’s easier to mine the period for drama spiked with high-stakes violence and leavened with moral conundrums about justice, loyalty and political expediency. Belfast-born novelist and screenwriter Ronan Bennett is just the right man to map out this terrain. It’s not just his having roots in the region that helps, but also his longtime involvement in British crime drama, from Face back in 1997 through TV series Top Boy, to historical mini-series Gunpowder about the Guy Fawkes plot.

Despite Rocksteady's acclaimed takes on its adaptations of DC characters in the Arkhamverse, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's version of Deadshot will likely be worse than his comics counterpart. Rocksteady's next entry in the Arkhamverse will be a third-person shooter that will allow players to take control of Amanda Waller's Task Force X - a group comprising some of DC's villains and antiheroes - as they take on Brainiac, who has brainwashed the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe: the Justice League.
Sony's February 2023 State of Play showcase revealed 15 minutes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League footage, including its best look at the title's gameplay to date. A leaked image of Suicide Squad: Ktjl's menu revealed live-service-esque features such as a battle pass, gear scores and builds, and an in-game store, and the showcase confirmed that many of these features would be in the final game.

Re/Member's dark and violent spin on a well-known time travel trope proves that Groundhog Day could have worked well as a horror movie. Adapted from a manga titled Re/member – Karada Sagashi, Netflix's Re/Member uses a high school as a setting to unravel a gripping survival drama. While its primary appeal comes from its central “Body Search” game in which six students race against time to find the missing pieces of a dead body, the Japanese horror movie effectively includes jump scares and breezily enjoyable heartfelt moments to keep viewers entertained throughout its runtime.
While unfolding its murder mystery drama with a paranormal time travel twist, Netflix's Re/Member also explores coming-of-age themes surrounding loneliness and the human memory's ambiguousness. Owing to these themes and its vast roster of well-written characters, Re/Member manages to stand out in the time travel sub-genre. However, despite all of these distinct elements, Re/Member,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 3
Like the classic episodes “The Naked Time” or “The Deadly Years,” Strange New Worlds has entered into Star Trek-storytelling mode all about a weird alien virus sweeping the ship. From The Next Generation to Deep Space 9 and beyond, every Trek show needs an episode like this, and in “Ghosts of Illyria,” we get a great one. When a virus that’s transmitted by light starts to make everyone lose it, it’s up to Number One to sort everything out.
“Ghosts of Illyria,” is, arguably, the first big episode to feature Rebecca Romijn’s Una Chin-Riley as the focus of the story. And as such, we get a lot of references to previous moments in Trek canon, many of which directly connect to her backstory, and La’an’s backstory, too. Here’s every...

Indie Horror Month 2022: Looking Back at the Making of Borderland with Director/Co-Writer Zev Berman
Middle-Earth had come to Minneapolis. There was no doubt about that. Standing in line for Sean Astin’s autograph at Wizard World in 2014, I could see reminders of Peter Jackson’s epic J.R.R. Tolkien adaptations all around me. Everyone else in the long line seemed to be clutching action figures, photographs, and posters featuring Samwise and his Fellowship friends, with the Lord of the Rings celebration interrupted only by the occasional The Goonies or Rudy memorabilia.
As the line inched closer to Astin’s table, I decided that I could safely presume I was one of only a few people without Lord of the Rings memorabilia to be autographed, and I was most likely—okay, very likely—the only one in line holding a DVD copy of the 2007 horror film Borderland to get signed by the beloved actor.
It’s not that I wasn’t a Lord of the Rings...

Star Trek Picard is, unsurprisingly, an absolutely treasure trove of continuity and easter eggs. Sometimes that’s fun, like when Seven of Nine silences the same bus punk that Spock did in Star Trek IV, and sometimes it’s baffling, such as when Guinan mysteriously de-ages and forgets Picard existed some time between the 19th and 21st centuries, or Picard’s Hallucination Dad adding a bunch of unnecessary backstory while gloating he kept his hair (despite the fact we already know he didn’t).
