Bob “Slim” Dunlap, the guitarist for The Replacements who played on their final two albums, Don’t Tell a Soul and All Shook Down, has died at age 73.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Dunlap died Wednesday, December 18th, due to complications from a severe stroke that he initially suffered in 2012.
“Bob passed at home today at 12:48 p.m. surrounded by family. We played him his ‘Live at the Turf Club, (’Thank You Dancers!)’ CD, and he left us shortly after listening to his version of ‘Hillbilly Heaven’ — quite poignant,” his family said in a statement. “It was a natural decline over the past week. Overall it was due to complications from his stroke.”
After starting out as a janitor at Minneapolis’ iconic music venue First Avenue, Dunlap joined The Replacements in 1987, replacing original guitarist Bob Stinson, and stayed with the band until their initial breakup in 1991.

The Replacements’ beloved major label debut, 1985’s Tim, will be expanded into a four-cd, one-lp box set this summer with a remix, previously unreleased recordings (including a few cuts with Alex Chilton), and a live recording from 1986 recorded a week before their shambolic SNL appearance. The rarities include alternate versions, demos, and even a “cello version” of “Can’t Hardly Wait.” The collection, officially titled Tim: Let It Bleed Edition, will come out Sept. 22.

He may have an impressive film CV, but the actor is destined to be remembered as The Office’s resident dork. He talks about why he was perfect for the role, his new movie, Don’t Tell a Soul – and his love for Steve Coogan
Some actors associated with a signature role will tire of talking about it. No such preciousness from Rainn Wilson, who appears on camera from his Los Angeles home wearing a grey T-shirt emblazoned with the word “Scranton”. That Pennsylvania city provided the setting for the US version of the mockumentary sitcom The Office, which ran for nine widely adored, award-winning series. Wilson earned three Emmy nominations for playing the livid, disagreeable Dwight, the Rust Belt equivalent of Mackenzie Crook’s Gareth. Today’s beard and baseball cap, as well as his chipper demeanour, banishes all memory of the pasty face, DIY haircut and startled expression he wore in that show.

The potential for horror films to serve as vehicles for provocative moral inquiry is fully realized in a pair of excellent thrillers new to Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate, writer-director Alex McAulay’s Don’t Tell a Soul and the surprisingly original 2021 reboot of the 2003 cult classic Wrong Turn. A throwback to all the B-grade knockoffs that followed such hit late ’80s/early ’90s household thrillers as “The Stepfather,” “Pacific Heights,” and “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” “Paradise Cove” will be nobody’s idea of an original movie, let alone a good one. Still, it provides a degree of schlock entertainment value, as a young couple discover their Malibu fixer-upper comes with a crazy homeless woman squatting on the premises, itching to turn homicidal … again. Low on suspense and plausibility but high on tasteless and absurd ideas, Martin Guigui’s film does offer undiscriminating viewers some fun, albeit more of a laughing-at than laughing-with variety.

Harry Macqueen’s Supernova opened in 330 theaters this weekend, bringing some warmth to the specialty box office space. The Bleecker Street drama starring Colin Firth and Stanely Tucci is garnering tons of awards season buzz and has added some fuel to the specialty fire that has been struggling to stay afloat for almost a year. With day and date release becoming more popular and release strategies always changing, Supernova put coins in its piggy bank as the specialty box office attempts to figure out the standard when it comes to what is a “successful opening weekend” in Covid times.
Supernova opened in 330 theaters this weekend to an estimated $98,670 with an average of $299. The film is garnering acclaim and with Firth and Tucci as its leads, the drama checks the appropriate boxes when it comes to an awards season film.

The specialty box office found some shine this weekend with four new titles starting with the Gravitas Ventures pic Our Friend starring Jason Segel, Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson.
The Gabriela Cowperthwaite-directed drama based on Matthew Teague’s book The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word debuted at 543 locations and grossed an estimated $250K on its first weekend out with a per-screen average $460. This bodes well for the drama which currently sits at an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and has thrown its hat in the ring for awards season.
The film separated itself from a typical day and date release as Gravitas used a focused and targeted exhibitor marketing approach. Outside of Wonder Woman 1984, which was an SVOD release, Our Friend debuted as the largest opening for a day and date film since October 16. It looks to expand next weekend to approximately 750 locations.

Don’t Tell a Soul is gripping new thriller Alex McAulay, about two brothers, and a cop who has fallen down a well. We had the pleasure of speaking to the aforementioned siblings, British actor Fionn Whitehead and the younger American star Jack Dylan Grazer.
The duo discuss the compelling screenplay, and the experience playing brothers in this production. They talk about co-star Rainn Wilson and what he was like to work with, and whether the poor man was actually down a well, or if that’s just the magic of cinema. We also look over other projects, discussing with Whitehead just how much he owes to Chris Nolan for giving him the opportunity to shine as the leading role in Dunkirk, while Grazer speaks about his time on We Are Who We Are with Luca Guadagnino, as well as the forthcoming sequel to Shazam, which we can’t wait to see.

January is often considered a poor month for new releases, but there are still plenty of incoming chills to keep you company through the winter. And below, we’ll pick out some of the highlights for you to keep an eye on.

"Desperate men do desperate things." Saban Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Don't Tell a Soul, the second film made by writer Alex McAulay. This was originally supposed to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, but later officially premiered in France at the Deauville Film Festival this fall. Two thieving teenage brothers, stealing money from an empty house to help their sick mom, match wits with a troubled security guard stuck at the bottom of a forgotten well. Should they leave him there or help him out? Each brother makes his own choice. The film stars Jack Dylan Grazer, Fionn Whitehead, Rainn Wilson, Mena Suvari, Richard Fike, and Abigail Esmena Froehle. This looks like a complex thriller that deals with all the moral implications – good and bad – of this situation. Might be worth a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Alex McAulay's Don't Tell a Soul,...

Pleased to Meet Me was the sound of the Replacements trying for once. The band’s previous five LPs were snarky slacker masterpieces full of chintzy songs about hating music ’cause it’s got too many notes, ironic Kiss covers, and the occasional tender ballad, and their concerts were more like drunken hootenannies — all of this sloppiness was what won them their legend. But sometime after recording their beloved Tim album, Paul Westerberg decided they ought to grow up a little, the group parted ways with founding guitarist Bob Stinson,...

Ahead of the Replacements’ massive Pleased to Meet Me reissue, the album standout “Can’t Hardly Wait” has received an official music video highlighting the song’s remastered sound.
The footage from the “Can’t Hardly Wait” video itself was culled from similarly sparse black-and-white promos for Pleased to Meet Me’s “The Ledge” and “Alex Chilton“; Rhino, which is reissuing the 1987 album, says that the video footage has been upgraded to HD along with the 2020 remastered sound.

We're back with another edition of Horror Highlights! Today's installment gives you a tease of The Howling Wind, the official trailer for The Droving, and details on the recent acquisition of Don't Tell a Soul:
The Howling Wind: "During a plagued dust and wind storm, a countryman takes in a weary traveler seeking refuge — but discovers the truth in the circumstances of his arrival."
"The Howling Wind, at its core, depicts how good people can become monsters when their survival is at stake. In the midst of a natural threat outside, the real terror comes from within. Our vision in crafting The Howling Wind was to utilize the classic style and timeless setting of the early 1960s in order to tell a universal story that although shot in early January, presciently reflects present day events."
The film was directed by Lorian Gish and Justin Knoepfel, written by Justin Knoepfel and stars Anthony Arkin,...

Rainn Wilson has been cast as a series regular in Amazon’s “The Power,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Wilson is also part of Amazon’s upcoming “Utopia,” based on the popular U.K. format and in feature films “Blackbird,” in which he stars opposite Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon, and “Don’t Tell A Soul,” which will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. His recent credits include the feature film “Meg” from Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Warner Bros., as well as small screen roles on “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Mom.” He also recently revised his undertaker role of Arthur from “Six Feet Under” in an appearance in “Transparent’s” finale.
