In 2022, upon the release of “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” Anurag Kashyap a close friend and collaborator of director Vasan Bala noted that Alia Bhatt is the new Bacchan. Bala, who we all know is fascinated by pop culture and how it shapes the narrative of the present, past, and future of cinema itself, must have taken the comment quite literally. With “Jigra,” his third directorial venture (fourth if you consider the unreleased “Peddlers“) Bala has a bigger budget and even greater star power in his kitty.
The usually dependable Alia Bhatt stars as Satya, an orphan who had made herself into such a rock-solid young woman that her meditative gaze can get any shit done. Early on in her life, she witnessed the tragic suicide of her father when she and her younger sibling Ankur (later played by Vedang Raina) returned from school one day. It’s obvious that ever since that day,...

Over the weekend, one of our most anticipated films of the year dropped an absolutely incredible trailer. TIFF Midnight Madness award winner, Vasan Bala (Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota / The Man Who Feels No Pain) returns to the big screen with Jigra, a big budget thriller starring Alia Bhatt (Gangubai Kathiawadi) and relative Vedang Raina (Netflix's The Archies) in his feature film debut. Produced by the legendary Dharma Productions studio in Mumbai, Jigra will be Vasan Bala's fourth feature overall, but his first to get international theatrical distribution, an incredibly exciting prospect that will hopefully put the filmmaker on some new radars as a talent to follow. Back in 2012, Bala's debut feature, Peddlers, was a Cannes Critics Week selection back in 2012, but...

Huma Qureshi, one of the stars of Zack Snyder’s Netflix film “Army of the Dead,” has wrapped the shoot of anti-body-shaming film “Double Xl.”
Qureshi, who stars in the film alongside Sonakshi Sinha, also debuts as a producer via her company Elemen3. Satram Ramani (“Helmet”) directs.
“In all cultures there are ways in which we try and standardize beauty and we try and almost tell young young girls, that [if] you don’t adhere to a certain body type, you are not beautiful, cherished, you’re not special, you’re not valued,” Qureshi told Variety. “Why do we not see models representing real women’s bodies? Why do we not see actresses of all shapes and sizes? They exist, so why are you not seeing that on the big screen? Because what it leads to is a lot of young women and men grow up with complexes as if they’re not good enough.

Welcome back to a new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! This month we’re talking to Lindsay Traves, a horror/Batman/lotsa stuff expert who has bylines all over town, including Comics Gaming Magazine, Bloody Disgusting, Grim Journal, and of course right here at Daily Dead. She’s also stepped into co-hosting duties for The Pod and the Pendulum, a “weekly podcast covering every horror movie franchise, one movie and one episode at a time.”
For this month’s movie, Traves finally got me to dive into a film with a rabid following and a Gif that serves as Thirst Twitter’s answer to “do you read Sutter Cane?” I’m talking, of course, about Adam Wingard’s 2014 action/slasher hybrid, The Guest. Unlike the celebrity-driven “The Masked Singer” and spin-off “The Masked Dancer,” where the focus is on who is behind the mask, “The Masked Talent” is a non-celebrity masked audition format concentrating on singing skills and talents. Two episodes, to be broadcast on the Mbc channel during the Chuseok Korean Thanksgiving holidays, invites the audience to participate.

Mumbai, Dec 2 (Ians) Actress Mrunal Thakur says she likes to pick her roles based on stories and emotions, and not on the star quotient associated with the projects.
"Every co-star offers you a unique perspective. From some it's experience, from some it's the craft and from some it's their raw energy," Mrunal said.
"I worked with Abhimanyu (Dassani) in 'Aankh Micholi' and he was such a hoot in 'Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota'. There's so much raw energy in him that he is capable of holding the scene all by himself. In 'Pippa', I will work with Ishaan Khatter and Priyanshu Painyuli, both of whom are just exemplary at what they do. In the end, I choose a film based on how brilliant the story is and how it will help me further my acting and better my craft. We live in times when content is king," she added.

Mumbai, Oct 24 (Ians) Actor Gulshan Devaiah feels recent controversies, related to allegations of Bollywood-drug trade nexus as well as nepotism charges, which have been surrounding the film fraternity, do not bother him.
"Without taking names, I want to say that the controversies and generalisation that have defamed our film industry in the recent past do not bother me. What bothers me is the people who are raising their voice with a huge amount of insincerity. If you know that you are an influential voice of the film industry, will you not check your own words before uttering them? That is why I have difficulty trusting them. The audience that is observing the toxicity, should sit back and try to understand who is benefitting from these controversies? As an audience, are you?" said the actor.

Actor Gulshan Devaiah says the problem with accepting depression as a disease is that a lot of people consider it to be a state of mind.
"There is a problem with accepting depression as a disease because most people think depression is a state of mind, or it is an emotion. Like, if I proposed to a girl and she turned me down and I say 'I am depressed', and (treat) depression as a state of mind," Gulshan Devaiah told Ians.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced its 2019 lineup, and it’s prodigious: 223 films from 78 countries, four of them world premieres. Though well known for celebrating future Oscar nominees (and winners) each year, the festival also boasts a deceptively robust world-cinema slate; among the upcoming offerings are Jia Zhangke’s “Ash Is Purest White,” Sergey Loznitsa’s “Donbass,” Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s “Birds of Passage,” and Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s “Asako I & II,” to name just a few.
A number of post-screening Q&As will also be held, including with “Black Klansman” author Ron Stallworth and “Support the Girls” star Regina Hall, in addition to a new section celebrating the best films to screen at Psiff throughout its first three decades.

Korean drama movie, “Clean Up” took the best film prize on Friday night at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival and Awards Macao.
The jury, which comprised Chen Kaige, Danis Tanovic, Mabel Cheung, Paul Currie, and Tillotama Shome, said: “’Clean Up’ is a powerful, visceral film which is symbolic and naturalistic at the same time… The director unfolds a psychological drama with simmering intensity, and humanists the criminal without condoning the heinous crime in any way.”
The festival, completing its third edition, wrapped up with another breezy and efficient closing ceremony, kept largely on schedule thanks to its local live broadcast.
Celebrities on the red carpet included Phillip Noyce, Aaron Kwok and Ben Wheatley. Industry executives in attendance included Ellen Eliasoph, Michael J. Werner and Shekhar Kapur.
The closing ceremony was also the occasion for Variety and the festival to present awards to Asia’s next wave of talent.

There is nothing subtle about Vasan Bala's (Peddlers) second film, The Man Who Feels No Pain. In this boisterous action comedy, Bala's passions and obsessions are writ large across the screen with a genuine affection that is hard to deny. Taking influences from his own action heroes of the '80s and '90s around the world, Bala and his solid leading cast of Abhimanyu Dasani, Radhika Madan, and Gulshan Devaiah express not only reverence for their antecedents, but also attempt to bring their own Indian flair to this lively crowd pleaser. Surya, played as an adult by Dasani, was born with congenital insensitivity to pain, a condition which puts him in a unique and dangerous position. The disease means that he can function through almost any...

If you can imagine a mashup of mid-1960s Marvel Comics, ‘70s chop-socky pics showcasing Bruce Lee and Lee wannabes, ‘80s VHS action-adventure fodder and freewheeling, genre-scrambling Bollywood masalas, then you might… No, wait, never mind. Even if you make the effort to envision such an aggregation, you probably won’t be fully prepared for the full-tilt, over-the-top phantasmagoria of “The Man Who Feels No Pain,” the not-entirely unexpected winner of the Audience Award in the Midnight Madness category at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
