“Stree 2,” already Bollywood’s biggest hit film of the year, and India’s second highest grossing film of 2024, is poised to be joined by one or more sequels, its director Amar Kaushik said on Wednesday.

Kaushik was speaking at a Knowledge Series seminar which is part of the Film Bazaar project market that sits alongside the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa.

“We have stories in mind and will shoot soon, though there’s is no definite timetable. Of course, it will have to be done in Madhya Pradesh. And we may explore other parts of the state,” Kaushik said.

Kaushik revealed that Madhya Pradesh was not where he first envisaged making the horror comedy that was saw its first instalment emerge in in 2018 and spawn a sequel that released earlier this year.

This outstanding performance not only broke many records within Bollywood but indicates growing interest among audiences for supernatural storylines.

Released during India’s Independence Day celebrations, “Stree 2” continues the story of 2018’s surprise hit “Stree.” The sequel follows main character Vicky and his friends as they face a new supernatural threat in their town. “Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank,” Amar Kaushik‘s sequel to his 2018 horror-comedy hit “Stree,” is on its way to becoming one of the biggest Indian blockbusters of the year. Produced by Maddock Films and billionaire Mukesh Ambani‘s Jio Studios, the film released on Thursday, Aug. 15, a public holiday in India for Independence Day. It had grossed $33.7 million through Sunday, in just four days of release, surpassing the $21.5 million lifetime earnings of “Stree.”

Set in the small town of Chanderi, in “Stree,” the menfolk lived in fear of an evil spirit named Stree who abducts men in the night. The film, written by the prolific Raj & Dk pair and Sumit Arora, was based on the folk legend of “Naale Baa” from the southern Indian state of Karnataka. In “Stree 2,” written by Niren Bhatt, Chanderi is being haunted again. This time, women are mysteriously abducted by a terrifying headless entity.

After three weeks atop the box-office weekend top ten, Deadpool & Wolverine was unseated by newcomer Alien: Romulus by $12.5 million.

In its first weekend of release, the horror film Alien: Romulus took control fo the weekend box office with an opening of $41.5 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Meanwhile, that studio’s second film in the top ten, Deadpool & Wolverine dropped to second place with $29.0 million after three weeks in the top spot. This gives the Walt Disney Studios Motion pictures product a four-week total of $545.8 million (so there probably isn’t too much sadness involved in giving up lead to another in-studio film). Stree 2’s main antagonist, Sarkata, was a vengeful being who used to be the patriarchal leader of Chanderi, called Chandrabhan, and was responsible for the deaths of the woman (who later went on to become Stree), her husband, and probably her child as well. When the deceased woman returned as Stree, she beheaded Chandrabhan and his men, and their bodies were buried in a secluded part of town. As long as Stree haunted Chanderi, Chandrabhan’s soul remained dormant. But, after the events of the first film, since the titular ghost went away, Chandrabhan returned to terrorize the people of Chanderi as a headless creature called Sarkata. Back in the day, Chandrabhan used to oppress women and use them like toys, and he wanted to reinstate that status quo.
