Nick Offerman was taken aback when he got a call from Alex Garland, offering him a part in the series. Offerman was thrilled with this outside-the-box casting as he's usually just asked to do comedy roles.
Amaya is named after (and played by) Sonoya Mizuno's niece.
Amaya is also referenced in Annihilation, also by Alex Garland. The fort previously occupied by the soldiers and discovered by the women is named Fort Amaya.
FX initially signed on for a pilot episode but then swiftly changed their mind and went for a straight-to-series order.
