Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” won the Golden Lion at the 81st Venice Film Festival. The Spanish auteur’s first feature in English took the top prize at the awards ceremony on Saturday, where he accepted the honor in person. Based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through,” the film stars Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore as friends who reunite after several years.

Though Almodóvar’s latest was not reviewed as enthusiastically as most of his films (a high bar to cross), the drama was still favored to do well at the Venice awards. When it premiered earlier this week, it was met with a lengthy standing ovation of almost 20 minutes — a warm reception even for festival audiences. And few are the cinephiles in Europe who do not consider the director of “All About My Mother,” “Talk to Her,” “Volver,” “Bad Education” and “Parallel Mothers” a living great.

"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new Tva agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.

So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. A brand new “The Boys” spinoff series, the second season of “Wheel of Time” and football highlight a robust lineup of new movies and shows coming to Amazon Prime Video in September. “Gen V,” a spinoff of “The Boys” set at a college, premieres on Sept. 29, while new episodes of “The Wheel of Time” Season 2 are rolling out all month long after the season premiere on Sept. 1.

Thursday Night Football is streaming starting Sept. 14, and a whole host of library movies worth checking out – from “Four Weddings and a Funeral” to “Dracula” to “10 Things I Hate About You” – are now streaming.

There’s also the premiere of the original film “Cassandro” starring Gael Garcia Bernal as a gay wrestler, and the acclaimed drama “A Thousand and One” comes to Prime Video on Sept. 19.

Indeed, you can, as the perpetually rising (and that’s Ok!) it girl and constant “breakout star” (she’s been here!) is about as easy and fun an interview subject as anyone would desire to have.

Where you know Viswanathan from depends on your taste in entertainment: the Emmy-nominated Aussie has been working since the age of 4 (when she booked her first commercial) and has appeared in a range of roles ever since, from the raunchy (and smart) teen 2018 comedy “Blockers” to the TBS anthology comedy series “Miracle Workers.” She’s done plenty of indies and had a recurring role on the animated comedy gem “BoJack Horseman.”

Jim Wiseman’s Sky original documentary “Williams and Mansell: Red 5” is set for a debut on Sky Documentaries and Now on July 8. Featuring some of the biggest names in F1, it follows Nigel Mansell and the Williams Racing team’s rise to fame told through the eyes of his team, family and drivers including Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok.

Mansell grew up in England in the 1960s, dreaming of becoming a professional race car driver, despite not having the financial means for it, while Frank Williams was realizing his own dream at the company he founded, Williams Grand Prix Engineering. The two joined forces, and after years of trying to win together, Mansell left to join Ferrari and then ultimately retired from racing after years of ups and downs, without ever winning the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. But seemingly overnight, he came out of retirement and re-joined Williams Racing.

4Dplex Experiences Added In Cambodia, Thailand

Korean tech firm Cj 4Dplex has struck a deal with Thailand’s Major Cineplex to add two ScreenX locations in Cambodia and Thailand. One will be located at the Aeon Mall Mean Chey, have almost 500 seats and have a 75-foot-wide central screen, making it the largest ScreenX auditorium in Southeast Asia. The other will be at Bangkok’s ICONSiam Mall location, debuting on July 27.

ScreenX is a multi-projection system with an immersive 270-degree field of view. That creates a virtual reality-like setting with cinema quality resolution. Major’s first ScreenX launched in 2022 at its Siam Paragon location in central Bangkok.

“We’ve received amazing reactions and feedback from our moviegoers for ScreenX in Thailand and expect to generate the same response at our Cambodia location,” said Vicha Poolvaraluk, CEO, Major Cineplex.

Taipei Film Festival is aiming to shine an international spotlight on Taiwanese actors through a new initiative, Top Talents, that will showcase nine actors including major stars Kai Ko and Chen Bolin.

Other actors selected for the initiative include Chen Yi-wen, who won a Golden Horse Award for A Sun; Taipei Film Award winners Hsu Wei-ning and Gingle Wang; Caitlin Fang who won best newcomer awards at both Golden Horse and Taipei Film Awards for American Girl; and Golden Bell Award regulars Hsueh Shih-ling, Esther Liu and Tseng Pei-yu.

Collaborating with Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca), the festival drew up a longlist from more than one hundred actors who had won prizes at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, Golden Bell Awards, which focus on TV production, and Taipei Film Awards.

As part of the merger, Automatik executives Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger have been named partners and co-presidents of film and production at Range.

Kavanaugh-Jones and Berger have over the last decade produced 70 films and television shows, with the likes of Damien Chazelle, Jeff Nichols, Alma Har’el, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Karyn Kusama, Nia DaCosta, Gia Coppola, Michael Pearce and Cory Finley.

Nyaff unveils first wave of features from China, Hong Kong, Japan and beyond.

The New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff) has unveiled the first wave of features for its 22nd edition and announced that Japanese actor Ryohei Suzuki will receive the Screen International Rising Star award.

Nyaff will run from July 14-30 at the city’s Film at Lincoln Center, with a programme of more than 60 titles, and Suzuki will be presented with the award recognising emerging talent from East Asia on July 15.

Love is a purely human emotion that can’t be faked — such is the theme at the center of the first trailer for Cory Finley’s “Landscape With Invisible Hands,” released Tuesday.

The film is based on the book by M.T. Anderson and, per the official synopsis, it takes place years into a benevolent occupation of Earth by an alien species. “When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.”

The trailer looks like a quirky romantic comedy, albeit with an alien invasion in the middle of it.

Just days after it premiered on May 29, 2023, “Reality” is now predicted to receive a top Emmy nomination for Best TV Movie. In the 82-minute telefilm, former two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria” and “The White Lotus”) portrays Reality Winner, the American intelligence specialist who, in 2017 at the age of 25, was arrested for allegedly leaking a report about potential Russian interference in the 2016 election to the media.

“Reality” made its initial debut at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year to great fanfare. It’s based on the play “Is This A Room” by Tina Satter, who now co-writes (with James Paul Dallas) and directs the movie. Co-stars include Josh Hamilton as Agent Garrick and Marchánt Davis.

David Mitchell is returning to the BBC for genre-bending detective comedy Ludwig, which features on a five-strong comedy slate alongside Hulu co-production Dinosaur and a show from The Duchess star Michelle de Swarte.

Unveiling his first major comedy slate at this afternoon’s BBC Comedy Festival in Cardiff, the corporation’s Comedy Director Jon Petrie said the shows reflect “the depth and range of our offerings which champion British creativity.”

The slate is led by Ludwig, Peep Show star Mitchell’s first BBC project since Upstart Crow, which follows the eponymous protagonist as he takes on the identity of his brother, Dci James Taylor, who has disappeared off the face of the earth. Mitchell’s Ludwig lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living under his nom-de-plume, and he struggles to adapt to being a twin who happens to be a successful Dci leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team.

Exclusive: WME has signed emerging British actor, writer and stage performer Layton Williams for U.S. representation.

Layton is currently starring in Season 4 of BBC Three state school comedy series Bad Education, on which he is also a writer.

He has played the role of Stephen Carmichael in the show since its first season and appeared in the 2015 film adaptation. The series, from Jack Whitehall, ran between 2012 and 2014 for three seasons before being revived this year.

Williams’ TV and film credits also include Beautiful People, Benidorm, The Cleaner, Murder They Hope and I Hate Suzie.

He began his career aged 11 on stage in Billy Elliot: The Musical and became the first Black actor to play the famous title role. He has starred in other West End shows such as Thriller Live, The Car Man, Hairspray the Musical and Rent. He also played the title role in 2021’s Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

Marc Maron has said that he turned down a role opposite Hugh Jackman in Bad Education because it needed “more gay-ness”.

The actor, comedian and podcast host had auditioned to play the boyfriend of Jackman’s character in the 2018 fact-based drama.

However, Maron, who is straight, suggested that he thought there wasn’t enough to the role.

“[The role was] Hugh Jackman’s boyfriend. He’s got nothing in there,” he said, while speaking to Ray Romano on his popular podcast Wtf. “I said, If I’m gonna be gay in a movie, [Jackman] would be a good guy to be gay with, but there didn’t seem to be much to the role other than that.

“I said, ‘I’ll wait to be gay when there’s more gay-ness.’”

Bad Education focuses on the story of school district superintendent Frank Tassone, who, along with assistant Pam Gluckin (played by Allison Janney), embezzled millions of dollars in school funds.

Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life, an LGBTQ-themed Western starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, will have its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the festival confirmed Tuesday.

The short, which sees The Northman star Ethan Hawke and The Last of Us‘ Pascal as two middle-aged gunslingers with a deep connection who meet up again after a 25-year separation, was widely tipped to bow on the Croisette. The film is Almodóvar’s second English-language short, after Tilda Swinton-starrer The Human Voice, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020.

In a statement following the Cannes announcement, Almodóvar gave a cryptic description of the film’s plot:

“A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake [Hawke]. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva [Pascal], the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen.

Huang Ji and Otsuka Ryuji’s “Stonewalling” won the Chinese-language section of the Hong Kong International Film Festival’s Firebird Young Cinema competition. Lila Aviles’s “Totem” won the equivalent Firebird Award for international films.

The festival began on March 30 and concluded on Sunday evening with a world premier screening of “Vital Sign” at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre. The screening was accompanied by cast and crew including Louis Koo, director Cheuk Wan-chi, producer Jacqueline Liu and performers Neo Yao, Angela Yuen, Ng Wing-sze, Tony Wu and So Yuet-yin.

Taiwanese actor Kai Ko’s directorial debut Bad Education, which has received four nominations at the upcoming Golden Horse Awards, is being launched by Harvest 9 Road Entertainment at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm).

As more and more media conglomerates shift their business models to subscription streaming platforms, the borderlines between “film” and “television” continue to dissolve. Methods of distribution are no longer concretely disparate as studio-made feature-length films now often debut exclusively on streaming sites and many TV creators describe their shows as “10-hour-long movies.” These newly permeable boundaries are rendering the taxonomies of awards season just plain weirder than ever.

Case in point: the utter grab bag that is the Emmy category for this year’s outstanding television movie, which has washed-up cartoon chipmunks competing against Auschwitz survivors. I suppose Emmy voters took the term “television” seriously, as most of the nominations center around cult-favorite TV wrap-ups and reboots. The lineup, quite frankly, is a bit bonkers.

Exclusive: Ethan Coen looks to have found the leads for his untitled pic at Working Title and Focus Features. Sources tell Deadline that Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan are set to star in the film, which will marks Coen’s first time directing a film on his own after having spent his movie career co-directing and writing with his brother Joel.

As of now, plot and character details are being kept under wraps for the new pic, which Ethan Coen co-wrote with his wife Tricia Cooke. They are also producing with Robert Graf and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

Coen had been meeting with talent for months, with the roles quickly becoming some of the more coveted parts in the biz for up-and-coming actresses. In recent weeks, a shortlist was made and chemistry readings were held; in the end, insiders say Qualley and Viswanathan’s screen tests could not be beat.

Roku is set to release a live capture of the West End stage show “Heathers: The Musical” as a Roku Original special on the Roku Channel. The special will be available to stream in the U.S. on Friday, Sept. 16.

Based on the 1989 cult classic film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, the musical adaptation follows Westerberg High student Veronica Sawyer, the beautiful yet cruel Heathers, and mysterious rebel Jason “J.D.” Dean. Ailsa Davidson (Veronica), Simon Gordon (J.D.), Maddison Firth (Heather Chandler), Vivian Panka (Heather Duke) and Teleri Hughes (Heather McNamara) star in the musical.

Andy Fickman directs the musical, with book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe. Fickman, Murphy and O’Keefe will produce, along with Village Roadshow Pictures (Vrp) and Bill Kenwright’s BKStudios. “Heathers: The Musical” will be filmed at The Other Palace, where the stage show made its U.K. debut...

Superhero drama Naomi has lost its fight with fate. The CW offering has been cancelled after one season, TVLine has learned.

Despite a promising launch — the show’s January debut ranked as The CW’s third-most watched season premiere of the 2021-22 season — its audience has since fallen by more than 40 percent. That said, its audience still tied for No. 5 among all CW dramas. The May 10 season finale will now serve as a series finale as well.

The BBC is investing an additional £10 million (12.3 million) in developing comedy.

Speaking at the BBC Comedy Festival in Newcastle, U.K., on Wednesday, BBC director of comedy Jon Petrie also revealed that the broadcaster will double the number of half-hour pilots made.

BBC Comedy and BBC Sounds will co-commission up to four audio comedy pilots. BBC Comedy Short Films will launch in June, consolidating current short form strands to create a space for both new and established talent to experiment and develop new work. Existing writing grants are being expanded into the BBC Comedy Bursary Collective initiative, which will give emerging comedy directors and producers a place to hone their craft.

BBC also unveiled a revival, commissions and re-commissions. Jack Whitehall’s “Bad Education,” that ran for three seasons from 2012 through 2014, is being revived with a one-off 10th anniversary special, followed by a new six-part series written by a team of breakthrough writers.

Exclusive: The BBC has committed big to comedy by adding £10M (12M) to the genre’s budget over the next two years, as Director Jon Petrie talks up U.S. co-pros and unveils a new season of Jack Whitehall’s Bad Education, a Detectorists feature and recommissions of The Cleaner, Jerk and Guilt.

The extra cash is intended for “high-impact material that represents the whole of the UK” and will help with “rising costs,” according to Petrie, who described it as a “sizeable increase.”

“I feel very lucky that we have it,” he added, as he chatted to Deadline before heading up to Newcastle for the BBC’s inaugural Comedy Festival, an event that has been keeping him busy since he replaced Shane Allen around six months ago. That’s something Groucho Marx might have said about “Raised Eyebrows,” a film about the legendary comic’s later years, which is solidifying its financing ahead of the Cannes Film Market.

Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winner Geoffrey Rush will play Groucho (born Julius) Marx toward the end of his life, in the 1970s, when he staged something of a comeback as a cranky octogenarian. Powerhouse indie producer Owen Moverman will direct the film, and has co-written it with Steve Stoliar, upon whose memoir the book is based.

Stoliar, a writer-producer (credits include episodes of “Wkrp in Cincinnati”!) came into Groucho’s orbit as a young man, and will be played by Charlie Plummer. An exciting and welcomed twist to the Emmy race for outstanding television movie has arrived, as Mimi Cave’s horror-comedy “Fresh,” starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, is being submitted for Primetime Emmy consideration.

This offers an interesting possibility in a category that hasn’t drummed up much excitement over the last couple of years. While buzzy titles like “Bad Education” and three consecutive “Black Mirror” episodes dominated, the soulful purpose of the category has seemed to be missing. Last year’s winner, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” was the only film of the five other nominees to have another Emmy nomination.

The dark, surreal comedy will be written and directed by Cory Finley and will be set in a “deeply stratified, alien future.” This will be one of the announced projects by Plan B as part of their recently signed deal with MGM. MGM’s distribution and marketing joint venture United Artists Releasing will release the film theatrically in the United States.

Written and executive produced by Siegel, Immigrant (wt) is the true story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (Nanjiani), the Indian-American entrepreneur who started Chippendales. The series will detail the insane, darkly comedic, crime-ridden story behind the unique male revue that became a cultural phenomenon.

Ashford will play the series regular role of Irene. An accountant by trade, Irene is the wife of Chippendales founder Steve Banerjee (Nanjiani), falling in love over a shared passion for tax loopholes and revenue expansion.
