Ravi Kishen was initially selected for the central role of Karna and Rama in the show but when the production was delayed, and Kishen moved south to take on new work. Upon his return, Ravi Kishen had gained weight and was considered unsuitable for the role of Karna and Rama, and was thus given a cameo role of Krishna in the television series despite being a superstar.
It was considered one of the most successful Indian television series of all time. It had an average viewership of 8.6 million in 2011 and the episode of Karna's birth and when he grows up in the same episode brought a whopping 13.4 million views at its peak.
