I had the opportunity to sit down in 2022 and watch the 2018 Chinese action movie "Lady Detective Shadow". Granted, I hadn't even heard about this movie from writer Hu Rong and director Si Shu-Bu prior to watching it, so I didn't know what it was about or what to expect. All I knew was that it was a Chinese action movie that I hadn't already seen, and that was essentially enough to make me watch it.
Now, I can't say that writer Hu Rong managed to churn out a storyline or plot that really fell much into my liking or taste. In fact, it was somewhat of a struggle for me to sit through this movie, as I am not really keen on detective and whos-done-it mysteries. And had I known that "Lady Detective Shadow" was such a movie, I would have skipped on it.
Actually and truth be told, then I was at a loss throughout most of the movie, not really knowing what was going on or whom all the characters were or what their motivations were. So that was somewhat of a factor that played against the overall enjoyment of "Lady Detective Shadow" for me.
I will say that the acting performances in the movie were actually good. I wasn't familiar with the cast in the movie, but they put on good performances and brought the movie to life nicely, despite of me not really having much of an interest in the actual storyline.
There is an abundance of Wire-Fu in the movie, you know where the martial artists are performing leaps and physical feats beyond the normal possibility of human movement. So if you enjoy those type of movies, there is some enjoyment to be had here.
I can't claim to have been much entertained here, or impressed with the movie, so my rating of "Lady Detective Shadow" lands on a mere four out of ten stars, and that is based mostly on the acting performances and the Wire-Fu action.
