It's a lazy film making. Interesting concept and the desire to deliver a message is only a starting point of the finished product. For a film to work, especially when it supposed to rely on lots of dramatic emotions and tangled relationships, it really needs more than just a clever idea. 'Your Eyes on Me' does't have them.
I blame the director first and foremost. I understand it's a low-budget indie feature... but it doesn't excuse poorly written script and poorly directed actors; The centre figure Gloria is supposed to be a charismatic performer, whose larger than the life drag-queen character hides his painful past. In reality, the actor is poorly rehearsed and wobbles in his hills. Why would anybody want to see such a lackluster drag show let alone ask to become a mentor?
The moment between Gloria and Alex, where inexplicable pull and warm attraction should have sparked, was painfully awkward. Even in the most passionate moment, there was no chemistry.
The scene where Gloria explains why she abandoned his baby was dry and unfelt... No wonder Alex's reaction is a contorted face without a real drop of tear... It all just feels unreal, unengaging, and superficial.
I get it, the director wanted to say anybody can become a family if there's enough love and care... But really, a PSA would be produced with more intensity and real emotions.
