Pods of orcas have been filmed attacking great white sharks and devouring their livers. The orcas view the liver as a delicacy and often leave the rest of the shark uneaten. After a spate of orca attacks in South Africa, great white sharks abandoned the area for over a year. In South Australia the abalone fishermen know it is relatively safe to dive after orca have been sighted in the area. It is not known how great white sharks become aware or communicate the presence of orcas, but following attacks they swiftly vacate the area in question.
