After 25 years, Susana Gimenez, Argentina’s celebrated TV host, actress, model and entrepreneur, is set to make her hotly anticipated return to the big screen in a new Diego Kaplan comedy.
The still untitled film, penned by Kaplan and Pablo Minces, centers on a preeminent child psychologist who has her own struggles with her 43-year-old son who is reluctant to leave home. Principal photography is slated for October in Buenos Aires.
“I can’t believe I’m making a movie after all these years; I certainly wasn’t planning for it,” said Gimenez. “But Diego is a force of nature and a visionary. When he pitched the project to me, I just couldn’t resist it and jumped right in,” she added. Aside from starring in a host of film and TV series, Gimenez hosted a top-rated talk show likened to that of Oprah Winfrey or Italy’s Raffaella Carrà.

With this new role, Zimbron fulfills his long-time ambition to expand his purview from Mexico to the rest of the region. It is unclear who will oversee Portuguese-speaking Brazil.
Zimbron’s film credits include some of the biggest box office hits in Mexico, taking in 2013 comedy “We are the Nobles” (“Nosotros los Nobles”) Gary Alazraki’s debut feature, which has been or will be remade in various territories, including the U.S.
Aside from founding his own production company, Traziende Films, Zimbron ran Warner Bros.

Weekend box office dropped post-Presidents Day, by the margin expected — but with an unexpected combination of results. “Call of the Wild” performed far better than predicted and nearly beat out “Sonic the Hedgehog” in week two. The pre-weekend consensus had the canine classic remake to gross in the teens, with the video game hitting closer to $30 million. Instead, the estimated margin is under $2 million, with “Sonic” ahead at $26.3 million.
Those two family-oriented titles made up about half the business, a big reason the weekend overall fell 20%. Recent openers have been weak to disastrous and while these two films were credible, they didn’t quite fill the void.
Year-to-date grosses are a little over $1.6 billion, around $180 million better than the same date in 2019. That’s a healthy uptick of about 12%.
The downward trend could continue next weekend with only one new wide release (“Invisible Man” from Universal), but Pixar with “Onward...

Focus Features’ “Emma.” opened strong on five screens in Los Angeles and New York this weekend, grossing an estimated $230,000 and a $46,000 per-screen average, which is the record for PSAs in 2020.
By comparison, the 2018 Focus period piece “Mary Queen of Scots” had a $49,000 average from a four-screen release. But while that film debuted in the height of the Q4 awards season, “Emma.” will try to leg out to a run of at least $15 million, possibly $20 million in a less-crowded market. Reviews have been very positive at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn and Bill Nighy, “Emma.” is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s comedy about a queen bee in high society that must navigate the perils of coming of age in a social class where everyone expects her to marry… whether she wants to or not.

Focus Features proved this weekend that Jane Austen’s classic of romantic misadventures and the humor that goes with it remains timeless. Emma., Autumn de Wilde’s visionary and fresh adaptation of the Austen novel, opened in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles to strong numbers, grossing an estimated $230,000. This brought the per-theater average to $46,000, which is the highest of any specialty opening this year — not too shabby for the Anya Taylor-Joy-led period rom-com.
The five runs across the Landmark, Alamo Drafthouse and Angelika in New York and the Arclight Hollywood and Landmark in Los Angeles are all reporting impressive numbers as the film sits at an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences seem to love it as they have ranked it at 100%.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog managed to hold off 20th Century's The Call of the Wild for a second weekend at #1, topping $106 million after just ten days in release and already ranking as the fourth largest video game adaptation domestically of all-time. Stx's release Brahms: The Boy II currently holds a narrow lead for a fourth place finish while truTV's release of Impractical Jokers: The Movie managed to land just outside the top ten despite playing in just 357 locations.
Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog dipped a little more than we anticipated, but still managed to hold on to the #1 spot at the weekend box office over its sophomore frame. The film fell -55% compared to its strong debut last weekend and delivered an estimated $26.3 million over the three-day, pushing the film's domestic cume over $106 million after just ten days in release. Underneath the veneer of a frivolous romantic comedy, “Las Pildoras de Mi Novio” (“My Boyfriend’s Meds”) packs a surprisingly potent message about the importance of talking about mental health issues with loved ones. Although to get to this useful kernel, the audience must first sit through some truly cringe-worthy scenes that not even Jaime Camil’s charm can smooth over.
It’s a message that goes down fairly heavy-handedly, but it’s possible that the movie could still move someone to be more open about what they’re going through. It’s also just as possible that the movie could leave viewers on a sour note from its bottom-shelf laughs and cheap gags.
Directed by Diego Kaplan, “Las Pildoras de Mi Novio” follows Jess (Sandra Echeverría), an ambitious marketing executive with a shot at a promotion if she figures out her tequila company’s new ad campaign on a staff retreat.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog looks to keep things rolling this weekend as it faces incoming competition from 20th Century's The Call of the Wild and Stx's Brahms: The Boy II. Sonic will have no trouble holding on to the top spot following its strong start last weekend as it looks to top $110 million after just ten days in release.
Following a massive start last weekend, accompanied by solid critical reviews and audience response, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog is looking at a another weekend atop the box office. We're anticipating a dip around -48% or so for a $30 millilon three-day. Should that forecast hold look for the film to top $110 million by the end of the weekend, on its way to becoming the third highest grossing video game adaptation domestically after just ten days in release.

"I know of a shaman who works in the kitchen." Pantelion Films + Lionsgate have debuted the first official trailer for a comedy movie titled My Boyfriend's Meds, officially known as Las Pildoras de mi Novio in Spanish (which just translates to My Boyfriend's Meds). This wacky comedy is about a woman who meets the man of her dreams, then suddenly asks him to join her on a work retreat to a remote island resort. But he forgets his prescription medications and goes just a little bit crazy once they're there. Ahh, the things we put up with for love. Sandra Echeverría stars with Jaime Camil, Ana Belena, Brian Baumgartner, Kevin Holt, Daniel Tovar, Pamela Almaza, Juan Soler, James Maslow, and Brooke Shields. This film looks totally, outrageously crazy in a very fake way, and maybe just a tiny bit funny. Decide for yourself. Here's the first official trailer for Diego Kaplan's My Boyfriend's Meds,...
