Despite being based on the book Clare at Sixteen the film takes place during Clare's college years.
The final location of the film is a theater, and when the stage hand shouts "Five! We open in five!" that happens exactly five minutes before the end of the film.
The film was shot over the course of 15 days in Louisville, Kentucky and one additional day of photography in Los Angeles.
