Exclusive: Spanish screenwriter Javier Gullón has been tapped to adapt Final Boarding, a horror film for Sony’s Screem Gems, based on a short story by Clarence Hammond.
Plot details for the film are under wraps. Screen Gems President Ashley Brucks optioned the story from Hammond, a former colleague from her time at Paramount Players, who will produce.
This marks the second studio horror project that Gullón has lined up recently, following his pitch sale of the Sarah Pinsker novella Two Truths and a Lie to Walter Hamada’s 18hz and Paramount. Prior to that, Gullón’s hot thriller spec The Bet sold preemptively to Warner Bros with 42 producing.
Establishing himself recently as one of the industry’s most sought-after writers of elevated horror, Gullón most famously wrote Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy, an A24 psychological thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Plot details for both of his other upcoming projects are under wraps,...

When law professor Tal (Grantham Coleman) enters his childhood home ahead of his father’s funeral, his young son Bentley (Dyllan Yelverton) turns to him with curiosity. “Is Grandpa going to be a ghost?” he asks. No, Tal responds. “So he won’t haunt us?” Tal patiently replies that he doesn’t think so.
As it turns out, Tal will be right on the first count and wrong on the second. MGM+’s Emperor of Ocean Park is not the sort of story in which spirits return to wreak supernatural havoc. It is, however, entirely about the ways in which Tal and his siblings are haunted by the memory of their dad, conservative judge Oliver Garland (Forest Whitaker), in ways that lend themselves to both Grishamesque thrills and Succession-lite angst. But even Whitaker’s innate gravitas can only do so much to fight gravity. Eventually, the drama sags under the weight of its messy ambition.

Dios mio! Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are scuttling toward expanding the reach of Blue Beetle with a new animated series. Miguel Puga has been working on the Blue Beetle animated series since early 2024 and will act as the project’s showrunner and director, with Cristian Martinez writing the scripts.
Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the top talent behind DC’s 2023 film, return for the Blue Beetle animated series as executive producers alongside John Richard. Galen Vaisman, who helped executive produce the movie, oversees the animated adaptation. Casting for the project remains a mystery, though Deadline says DC is in contact with multiple stars from the live-action film. Although deals still need to be implemented, their response was positive.
The Blue Beetle animated series continues the story started in Soto’s live-action film. If audiences connect with the animated series, DC could continue the story in a new live-action sequel.

"Is there something on your conscience you want to talk about?" MGM+ has revealed an official trailer for a new streaming series titled Emperor of Ocean Park, arriving to watch starting in July this summer. It's adapted from the bestselling novel "The Emperor of Ocean Park" written by Stephen L. Carter. It follows Talcott Garland, whose tranquil existence is upended by the death of his father. Mariah Denton, a former journalist and ardent conspiracy theorist, questions the manner of his death and thinks he might have been the victim of foul play. Created by Sherman Payne, the series is based on the book of the same name, and is set in two privileged worlds: "the upper crust African American society of the Eastern seabord — families who summer at Martha's Vineyard — and the inner circle of an Ivy League law school." Starring Forest Whitaker, Grantham Coleman, Henry Simmons, and Tiffany Mack,...

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and former Overbook head Caleeb Pinkett (Cobra Kai) are set to produce a live-action feature adaptation of The Storm Clan, the comic book created by Dallas Jackson and Joe Casey, which marks the first title from Jackson’s new company DJ Classicz Comix.
Jackson and Casey will pen the script, with former Lionsgate exec Jorge Alfaro to serve as an EP.
A sci-fi action adventure story, The Storm Clan watches as an ex-military weapons engineer trains his five adopted children to be undercover hi-tech/martial-arts thieves wearing an invincible bionic-body armor. There is a scene relatively early in the new "Blue Beetle" movie where its lead character, Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo Maridueña), is seen with his sister, Milagros (played by Belissa Escobedo), sitting on the rooftop of their family's house. The two are reflecting on all the trials and tribulations they and their family have been through, some of which the audience is privy to. The conversation eventually leads to them fretting about the encroachment of the movie's fictional Kord Industries and how it's been nefariously buying up land across their fictional home of Palmera City, leaving lower-middle-class families like theirs with fewer opportunities to grow. Frustrated, Milagros says to Jaime, "We live on the other side of the tracks, and now they want to take that too." For "Blue Beetle" director Ángel Manuel Soto, who is Puerto Rican, this is a line that he knew would resonate sharply with...

The latest D.C. superhero movie is not another grim Batman sequel, or yet another Superman reboot. It’s a colorful introduction to a new hero, Blue Beetle, and the family that supports him, from job interviews to superhero-level fights. Unless you’re a fan of his comics or an avid watcher of “Teen Titans,” you might be wondering who is “Blue Beetle?” It’s a challenge director Angel Manuel Soto (“Charm City Kings“) has taken on with a heartfelt love for the Mexican American character and his family, a sense of humor, and a shared passion of Latin music and ‘80s playlists.

There’s a lot that’s familiar in Blue Beetle, the latest from — and one of the last remnants of — a dying cinematic universe. It’s a superhero origin story movie, so you’ve got a good sense of what you’re getting right from the get-go: someone ordinary getting thrown into something extraordinary, CGI battles, some wisecracks and rib nudges and heartstring thrums (no Snyderverse dude-brooding here), lots of destruction of public property, more CGI battles. Amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes, Warner Bros. and DC Studios launched “Blue Beetle” on Tuesday night in Los Angeles with a star-free “fan screening” in lieu of a splashy blue-carpet premiere.
Despite the fact that the film’s actors — including Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza and Susan Sarandon — could not attend due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, there was still plenty of fanfare outside the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Director Ángel Manuel Soto rolled solo on the carpet, as he’s done for a significant chunk of the movie’s promotional tour, due to both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA being on strike. The filmmaker, who carried and posed with a cutout of Maridueña’s face, was riding high off the positive early buzz for the DC movie and delivered a speech before the special L.A. screening began, in which he acknowledged the “Blue Beetle” cast...

The first reactions to DC Studios’ “Blue Beetle,” starring Xolo Maridueña, are flying in, with early viewers calling the film a “huge surprise.” While some of the reactions quibble with parts feeling shaky or playing things a bit too silly, they mostly praise the film’s action, heart and specific touchstones to Latino culture.
The film, which hits theaters on Aug. 18, follows teenager Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) and his encounter with an alien relic that attaches to his body, bestowing the adolescent with extraordinary powers. Blue Beetle, notably, is one of the most preeminent Latino superheroes in comic book history. The rest of the “Blue Beetle” cast is predominantly Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

As one of the last projects of the former Dceu, it remains to be seen what the future has in store for Blue Beetle, but James Gunn has said that while Superman: Legacy will be the first movie in the Dcu, Blue Beetle will be the first Dcu character. That would suit Xolo Maridueña just fine, as he told Entertainment Weekly that he wants “to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle.“
Xolo Maridueña added that he has spoken with James Gunn and Peter Safran about the future of Blue Beetle. “Yeah, I have had the chance to speak with them,” Maridueña said. “They’re really happy for our project and so excited for us to kick off what is to eventually become the next Dcu. But with this movie, really what we wanted to highlight was Jaime’s story and the Reyes family’s story. I’m excited to see...

The arrival of the latest DC superhero is nearly upon us, and he may make a bigger impression at the box office than we thought. Previous reports stated that Blue Beetle was tracking toward a $17 million opening at the domestic box office, but a new report has seen that number almost double.
According to Deadline, early tracking for Blue Beetle finds the DC movie eyeing a $30 million opening at the domestic box office. While that may not seem impressive for a superhero movie, especially after The Flash bombed with a $55 million opening, it’s important to remember that Blue Beetle has a significantly lower budget. The report states that the film is tracking very well with Latino and Hispanic audiences, who are eager to see DC’s first Latino superhero on the big screen.

When people transform into their superhero personas in comic-book movies, the change is rarely as disturbing as it appears to be in Blue Beetle. While speaking with Variety, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto discussed his cinematic inspirations, including looking to David Cronenberg for the main character’s transformation.
Angel Manuel Soto is a die-hard cinephile who isn’t afraid to show his influences in his work, and when it came time to show Jaime’s first transformation into Blue Beetle, he wanted to make it a more visceral experience, just like the king of body horror. “How can we do [David] Cronenberg for kids?” Soto said. “I wanted the energy to be fun but also tell the story about the movies that made me love movies.“

“Blue Beetle” director Ángel Manuel Soto is an eternal optimist.
It was January 2020 when Soto’s coming-of-age story “Charm City Kings” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize for ensemble acting. Sony Pictures Classics planned to release the film on April 10, which would have come after its intended bow at South by Southwest on March 15. Yet, as for so many movies, a global pandemic changed those plans. It eventually ended up in the hands of HBO Max ahead of its rebrand, but if anyone visits Max, it’s not available, as it was one of the movies that was quietly removed from the platform.
And here Soto is again, sitting in a hotel room on Zoom amid his travels without his actors and writers to promote the film, which opens Aug. 18. He’s going at it alone due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes,...

It’s almost time for Jaime Reyes to scuttle onto the silver screen in DC’s Blue Beetle! While promotional engagements for the film have their wings clipped because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Fandango wants superhero fans to know that Blue Beetle tickets are available for pre-order!
Blue Beetle is DC’s second-to-last superhero film before James Gunn and Peter Safran reset aspects of the Dceu, ushering in a new era of superheroics and anticipated character debuts. Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle introduces Jaime Reyes, DC’s first solo superhero film with a Latino lead. Many DC fans have expressed excitement about the film, especially after the collected release of Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, a limited comic book series from writer Josh Trujillo and artist Adrian Gutierrez.
Here’s the official synopsis for Blue Beetle: Graduation Day via Penguin Random House:
Jaime Reyes has a lot to juggle.

When Warner Bros. reached out to Angel Manuel Soto about directing a DC movie, the Charm City Kings director had other ideas about his Dceu debut. “I wanted to pitch ideas, and one of them was the Bane origin story,” Soto told Den of Geek magazine. Bane, featured in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, is a complex villain with mystery flowing through his venom-infused veins. Countless writers have tackled the Batman back-breaking behemoth in the comics, and Soto wanted his chance to explore Bane’s history. “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be… [but] the conversation was not about that,” said Soto about WB’s intentions.
According to Soto, WB was excited to offer him a chance to direct Blue Beetle, the studio’s first superhero film with a Latino lead. While Soto’s idea...

When Warner Bros. contacted “Charm City Kings” filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto about potentially directing a DC comic book tentpole, he geared up to pitch the studio on a much different movie.
“I wanted to pitch ideas, and one of them was the Bane origin story,” Soto recently told Den of Geek magazine. “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be… [but] the conversation was not about that.”
According to Soto, Warner Bros. already had “Blue Beetle” in mind for him to direct. He recalled the studio saying, “There’s this character that we’ve been developing for a couple of years. The Blue Beetle, a Latino superhero.”

DC’s Blue Beetle is skittering toward an unfortunate opening at the box office if the latest predictions are accurate. According to Boxoffice Pro, the superhero film starring Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes is tracking for the lowest opening weekend in the DC Extended Universe’s history. The site predicts a $12M-$17M domestic take for Blue Beetle’s opening gambit. Analysts also expect a domestic total of $27M-$55M for the film’s domestic run, a number that places Blue Beetle on the low end of DC‘s rickety ladder. However, it’s possible that the numbers are wrong, and Blue Beetle will open stronger than anticipated. We’ve seen underdog films blow past predictions, and positive word of mouth could boost the film’s performance.

Before the new DC Universe officially kicks off with Superman: Legacy, we still have two films that were developed under the old Dceu to go — Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle. The Aquaman sequel won’t be released until December, but Blue Beetle will be hitting theaters next month, and star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) told Total Film that it has gotten the seal of approval from James Gunn himself.
“I just remember James Gunn has this really excited energy to him all the time,” Xolo Maridueña said. “But them coming into this position of the movie already being made, and then being like, ‘All right [mimes rifling through a filing cabinet as if rummaging through the movie], let’s see what we have here’ – it was very rewarding for them to actually respond well to it and enjoy it. Earlier, the star of Blue Beetle, Xolo Maridueña, was wise not to put the cart before the horse in regard to the character’s standing as a franchise as he wanted to wait to see how the movie does, “If we get one movie or a trilogy and f*cking fold this into the Justice League shit, we’re ready for the whole nine. For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.“. However, it was a little murky on which regime of the DC film universe the origin story would fall under. Actress and recording artist Becky G has joined DC’s upcoming “Blue Beetle” in a crucial role, she announced on her social media on Monday.
The singer is voicing the Scarab, an alien-created artificial intelligence that gives superpowers to Blue Beetle, played by “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña.
In the DC Comics, Scarab has been passed down through several of the heroes who have operated as Blue Beetle. Designed to bond symbiotically with its host, the Scarab can provide a wide range of abilities, including enhanced strength, durability, and energy projection. However, it also has a mind of its own and can sometimes take control of its host, leading to conflicts and challenges for the Blue Beetle.
