It will be many months before exhibitors might expect to see box-office returns that resemble the norms we once took for granted. In the meantime, a different metric has taken hold: Is there proof that domestic theaters are gaining traction against the audience’s pandemic resistance? Does it makes sense to go for broke with a high-end domestic release?
This weekend did not offer that evidence. The top 10 titles took in around $10 million, with somewhere under $12 million all told. This weekend saw perhaps 3 percent more theaters open over last weekend, which totaled a little over $11 million. All told, a little over 75 percent of all U.S. complexes are open; the total percentage for North America is a bit higher since nearly all Canadian theaters are now open.
There were four new entries, which included two reissues; they brought in less than $2 million. The overall take for the weekend is likely to be somewhere under $12 million,...

To the excitement of many, many Bts fans, the trailer for the boyband’s upcoming concert film “Bring the Soul: The Movie” is officially here.
Making its worldwide premiere Aug. 7, the film follows the wildly popular South Korean group during the European leg of their “Love Yourself” tour. The trailer teases scenes typical to most concert movies — behind-the-scenes clips of the boys offer a voyeuristic glimpse into the lives of the global pop-stars, intercut throughout by live performances from their shows.
Even the Bts fandom, coined the Army, gets recognition in the new movie through one-on-one interviews highlighting their love for the band.
Directed by Park Jun Soon, “Bring the Soul” marks the third film to follow Bts while touring, following 2018’s “Burn the Stage: The Movie” and “Love Yourself in Seoul” released in theaters earlier this year. The former movie, which was a longer feature version of the band’s Youtube Series,...

Bts will be back on the big screen this summer. The Korean pop group announced today that their latest feature film, “Bring the Soul: The Movie,” will have a global release on August 7. It arrives just six and a half months after the septet’s last film release, “Love Yourself in Seoul.”
“Bring the Soul” is expected to be similar in theme to 2018’s “Burn the Stage: The Movie,” which was a mixture of Bts’ live performances, interviews and candid footage of the septet being tourists. This latest film focuses on the band’s final days of their “Love Yourself” tour in Europe. The filmmakers promise that the group — made up of members Rm, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook — will share never-before-heard anecdotes.
“Trafalgar Releasing is thrilled to collaborate with Big Hit Entertainment again for ‘Bring the Soul: The Movie,’” Trafalgar Releasing CEO Marc Allenby said in a statement.

This year’s industry activity at documentary festival Cph:dox, which took place in Danish capital Copenhagen this week, was dominated by one question: will traditional documentary business models survive in the face of increased disruption from online platforms?
There’s no doubt that the last 12 months have been a boom time for the documentary space. Films such as Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Free Solo, Three Identical Strangers, They Shall Not Grow Old and McQueen have delivered big audiences, sparking increased belief in the factual medium as a big screen proposition.

Event cinema is coming of age as movie theaters increasingly look to live events and one-night screenings during the Sunday-Thursday corridor.
Bts concert documentary, “Burn the Stage: The Movie,” pulled in a record-setting $18 million in 79 territories at 2,650 movie theaters in three nights for Trafalgar Releasing — including $3.6 million in the U.S.
Peter Jackson’s World War I documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old” earned $2.3 million at 1,142 theaters in North America on Dec. 17 — marking the largest single night for a Fathom Events documentary. It will screen again at more than 900 locations on Dec. 27.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore, said the numbers show that 2018 is a turning point for event cinema.

Bts concert movie has now garnered the biggest-ever box office haul for an event cinema release. “Burn the Stage: The Movie” has raked in $18.5 million around the world, distributor Trafalgar Releasing told Variety.
The film follows Korean boy-band sensations Bts on their Wings tour, which was seen by more than 500,000 fans. The movie had already notched the attendance record after its original release window, usurping One Direction, which had held the top spot with its concert film, “One Direction: Where We Are.” But the two movies were essentially tied in terms of box office, both having grossed $14 million.
“Burn the Stage” has now surpassed “One Direction: Where We Are” to take sole possession of the box-office crown after it went back into theaters for encore screenings in the U.S., U.K. and other territories. It also had its premiere in India.
The new screenings boosted admissions to 2 million. Advance ticket sales topped 1 million.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Photo: Warner Bros).
Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beasts sequel worked its magic on moviegoers last weekend, ringing up $253.6 million worldwide as the Australian opening outshone the Us debut.
It was a buoyant frame in Oz, boosted by Trafalgar Releasing’s Burn the Stage: The Movie, while another alternate content release, Rialto’s Spitfire was less successful.
The Old Man & the Gun, which could be Robert Redford’s final screen role, is playing on limited screens in the Us but went out far wider here via eOne with modest results.
Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black reached $11.7 million after earning $74,000 in its ninth frame for Sony Pictures. Meanwhile Catherine Scott’s Backtrack Boys has generated $104,000 and Heath Davis’ comedy-drama Book Week has collected $34,000.
Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters, which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, stole a respectable $52,000 on 15 screens and $161,000 including festival screenings and previews for Rialto.
