Although it premiered at Sundance almost a year ago, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence is finally making its way to theaters, and audiences may well find themselves surprised by it both formally and narratively. A refreshing spin on a familiar genre, Presence manages to perfectly tread the line between challenging audiences and delivering satisfying entertainment.
Presence Review
Presence follows a family who, after moving to a new house in the suburbs following a tragedy, begin to believe that they are being haunted by an unseen presence. At the core of the film is a relatively standard haunted house story, but this is only the framework upon which something much more intriguing and complex is built.
Like much of Soderbergh’s recent output, Presence is as much an experiment in form as it is anything else. He shot the movie using Dslr cameras as opposed to the typical high-grade professional camera equipment,...

Get Fast opens in the midst of a chase involving two cars and a small plane that turns into a shootout that pits The Thief and Vic against Tank and Sly.
By the time it’s over, Tank has a large hole where his stomach was, and The Thief is in possession of two large bags of cash. The problem is, that cash belonged to Tank’s sister Nushi, a ruthless, crime boss who’s dispatched her top gun The Cowboy to get it back and is happy to use Vic as a bargaining chip.

For a symbol that’s often regarded as the true mascot of the Halloween season, it’s strange that pumpkins aren’t the focus of more horror movies – especially when you consider the spooky folklore surrounding jack ‘o lanterns. Sure, pumpkins are featured in several popular franchises, but they’re usually relegated to atmospheric set dressing meant to enhance the seasonal mood.
However, that’s not always the case. And with Halloween finally upon us, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest pumpkins in horror! After all, it’s only a matter of time before these autumn gourds begin fighting back against the folks who gleefully mutilate them year after year.
In order to keep things interesting, we’ll only be including a single pumpkin per franchise while also disregarding the overall quality of the movies that they appear in. We also won...

It’s Halloween, and you know what that means: It’s the perfect time to watch horror movies. Vampires, serial killers, haunted houses, the month that precedes Halloween is the prime time to watch scary movies, but not every scary movie is a Halloween movie… and not every Halloween movie is scary.
So it is with great relish that we present the 31 best Halloween movies ever, exclusively featuring films that actually take place on Halloween, or at least during the Halloween season. The point is, if Halloween doesn’t play a major part in the movie it’s not fair to call it a “Halloween movie,” and as long as Halloween shows up in some important way, it doesn’t matter where the film is frightening, funny, or even just for little kids.

Justin Harding’s Carved, based on the filmmaker’s 2018 short of the same name, falls victim to typical short-turned-feature issues that Brandon Espy’s Mr. Crocket better sidesteps. It's a bite-sized idea in a king-sized wrapper. Hulu's latest "Huluween" treat is stale, dismissively tropey, and cannot sustain its elongated duration. Save for a smattering of body-hacking practical effects, Carved is an unenthusiastic holiday dud that’s not worth its momentary highlights of violent pumpkin-inflicted punishments.

With the fall season underway, these horror books are perfect reads for the colder weather. The most terrifying horror books are often linked to fall because of the connection with Halloween, but this isnt an exclusive rule. However, 2024 is seeing the release of several books that get readers in the Halloween spirit, many of which are inspired by past classics. Fall is also associated with the beauty and brightness of the summer months coming to an end and the darkness drawing in, which fits the horror genre brilliantly.
There are also plenty of movies and TV shows that encompass the fall season, but literature has an advantage that the screen doesnt. The power of the written word, especially in horror, is even more unsettling because of the lack of imagery. As the nights get gloomier and the temperature drops, these books are well worth checking out and adding to your fall reading list.

When it comes to Halloween slashers, John Carpenter’s Halloween still reigns supreme all these years later. Not only did it launch an enduring franchise, but it inspired a slasher craze. Of course, it’s far from the only slasher movie set around our favorite holiday.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to Halloween slashers beyond the Halloween franchise that similarly bring the carnage and holiday spirit in equal measure.
These slashers unleash buckets of blood (and then some), using Halloween as a stunning backdrop for the mayhem, from pumpkins galore to haunt attractions from hell.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) and screenwriter Michael Gilio (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) adapt Norman Partridge’s 2006 Bram Stoker Award-winning novel Dark Harvest, unleashing Halloween carnage that upstages the barebones story.

“Teacup,” Peacock’s new series executive produced by James Wan, is a tricky one to write about. Writer, producer, and showrunner Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone) draws very little from Robert McCammon’s Stinger, opting for a modern, minimalist interpretation of the horror western, one driven almost entirely by its central mystery. The eight-episode inaugural season is so structured around its enigmatic threat, purpose, methodology, and reach that “Teacup“ becomes a landmine of spoilers to dodge for the sake of preserving its many, many surprises. While that makes for a lot of setup and character dynamics to establish, McCulloch’s careful plotting and effective atmospherics pay off, resulting in an intense, rewarding inaugural season.
Set in rural Georgia, the series sees a disparate group of people forced together by a mysterious phenomenon in their surrounding woods. The type that leaves them without electricity, cell phone service, or a way to escape whatever...

Thanksgiving, a 2023 horror film directed by Eli Roth, was inspired by a fictitious trailer from 2007's Grindhouse. Thanksgiving received positive reviews, grossed $46.5 million, and has a sequel scheduled for 2025. Dark Harvest, also from 2023, shares similarities with Thanksgiving but takes a fantasy approach based on a 2006 book.
Thanksgiving chronicles a killer donning a John Carver mask terrorizing a small town during the late November holiday, and one underrated horror movie released the same year bears similar qualities. In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several videos by director David Slade. David Slade is something of a conundrum for me. I find it hard to connect the films in his oeuvre in a coherent way, outside of some visual flourishes. What do you make of an oeuvre that consists of a gnarly cat and mouse thriller (Hard Candy), a comic book horror movie (30 Days of Night), a teen vampire romance (The Twilight Sage: Eclipse), a choose your own adventure interactive scifi film (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) and an incredibly odd monster movie set in the sixties (Dark Harvest). All of them are genre films that deal with human...

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

Another year bites the dust, friends. Another year where I've watched too many horror movies, and now it’s time to face the impossible task of sorting the best into a ranked list. I’ve been doing it since my first year as a big-boy film critic almost a decade ago, but it never gets easier. I’ve seen over 130+ horror movies in 2023! Ten slots aren’t enough to capture the massive breadth of worthwhile horror titles you should consume. I won’t do it, dammit. I can’t.
…Ok maybe I can but still, it’s harder than it looks! There are so many noteworthy films not listed, but that's the beauty of opinions and personal preferences. My list is mine and mine alone. Other critics will have their own takes, and more power to the variety of responses highlighting as many releases as possible. So let’s get...

Horror remains as vital as ever. While other films flounder at the box office, horror almost always reigns supreme. Audiences simply cannot get enough. We inherently love to be scared; to be disturbed; to be frightened. To sit in the dark and let something scary take hold of us. The horror films of 2023 were an eclectic bunch — weird, wonderful, both fresh and familiar. Slasher throwbacks, modernist takes on classic tropes, and bold new voices in the genre all presented themselves to us, giving us the creeps in the process.
As is always the case when making a list like this, it's important to recognize the titles that didn't make the cut. So while we're proud of our ranked list of the top 10 horror movies of 2023, we also want to highlight several titles not on the list — "Knock at the Cabin," "The Sacrifice Game," "Haunted Mansion," "The Conference," "The Outwaters," "The Passenger,...

There's a reason the young adult dystopia fad took off when it did in the 21st century. After a decade that saw the U.S. waging multiple wars overseas and a worldwide financial crisis, stories centering on oppressive, totalitarian governments and socioeconomic inequality very much spoke to the concerns of young people. While Norman Patridge's 2006 novel "Dark Harvest" is a horror-fantasy rather than sci-fi and came out two years before the first "Hunger Games" book, it, too, was clearly informed by what was happening in the 2000s, particularly how the United States' "War on Terror" paralleled its approach to the Cold War and Vietnam back in the 1960s.
By comparison, director David Slade's "Dark Harvest" movie adaptation was late to the party when it finally came together, only to be bounced back multiple times as a result of Covid-19 before quietly being released on digital just in time for the 2023 scary season.

Out of all the classic monsters that pop up in costume shops around the Halloween season, there’s one that I believe has always been criminally underused in scary movies. Unlike witches, vampires and undead ghouls, the lowly Scarecrow is usually relegated to the background of mainstream horror media despite serving as an instantly recognizable (and genuinely eerie) harbinger of Autumn.
That’s not to say that we haven’t seen memorable examples of these ever-watching fiends in scary movies before – I just wish that there were more of them! New 2023 Horror Movie Is Destined To Become A Halloween Cult Classic - So Why Is Nobody Watching It?
Dark Harvest, directed by David Slade, is a new horror film that has gone under the radar despite its potential to become a Halloween favorite. Slade's career has primarily focused on TV work, but he has returned to movies for Dark Harvest, which is based on a cult 2006 horror novel. The film has received a positive response with a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has not received much promotion or fanfare. However, its unique premise and setting make it likely to develop a cult following.

Given the success of Max's Fionna and Cake, which is an offshoot of Adventure Time, the door is now open for more animated series spinoffs. Considering the extensive lineup of classic cartoons that have emerged in recent decades, the possibilities for spinoffs are endless. When executed properly, a spinoff series has the potential to revive longtime supporters, bridging the gaps between generations old and new, and that's good for creators and viewers alike.
Shows like The Legend of Korra, which followed as one of the spinoffs of Avatar: The Last Airbender, can be an easy success due to the existing fanbase and IP brand recognition while simultaneously adding fresh angles and new perspectives that attract additional audiences. The exploration of secondary characters and the expansion of abandoned plots is a formula that few can resist. With this considered, there are several other popular cartoons that could benefit from having a spinoff.

Horror films have a special quality about them if done right. There can be a lot of serious socio-political issues raised in horror movies that might get too preachy and boring in a plain drama. But served within the known templates of the slasher and horror genres, it becomes entertaining and fun. The deeper ideas may not be apparent on the very first watch, but the film becomes layered, and its re-watchability increases. Dark Harvest, directed by David Slade, is a sincerely made horror film that really emphasizes the hero myth, the prejudiced behavior of people, and how easy it is to mobilize the youth through the us versus them narrative. The conflict between the individual and the collective is also thrown into the mix, but that’s all hidden beneath this world that resembles an American small town of the 1960s but is totally different in actuality.

This is the month of October, which is why there are so many horror movies around the corner, and many revolve around Halloween. It’s one festival that is actively associated with the macabre, especially in movies, and yet there is always a demand for such flicks. They are fun and become even more entertaining with friends. Dark Harvest is another entertaining film revolving around this particular festival, although the timeline has been shifted to the 1960s, and even the world of this film is retro-dystopian in nature. The meaning of this film is quite layered, and once viewed through the socio-political lens of America, the film reveals a lot more than just a monster who is killing teenagers. There is an underpinning to the mass control of the population of Illinois during the Cold War period. Now, that is not explicitly mentioned in the film, but the way the...

Plot: A legendary monster called October Boy terrorizes residents in a small Midwestern town when he rises from the cornfields every Halloween with his butcher knife and makes his way toward those who are brave enough to confront him.
Review: I always love a good curse story and when you add in the town sacrifice element I’m even more on board. Dark Harvest deals with a pumpkin monster that comes around every Halloween, that the boys from the town must kill in order to keep the town alive with a bountiful harvest. These boys are from the wrong side of town, so they’re less fortunate and often forced to do it. Whichever boy kills the monster, gets a massive prize and their family is set up well in the community. The concept is interesting and there’s a lot of potential here. Unfortunately, it blunders at nearly every turn.

Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) dishes up a devilishly delicious Halloween treat with MGM’s Dark Harvest. Slade and screenwriter Michael Gilio deliver plenty of gore and gruesome deaths, and the R-rating is not only justified but embraced.
It’s made clear straight away that there’s something wrong with the small town of Bastion, something that only the death of a terrifying creature known as Sawtooth Jack (think Slenderman with a pumpkin head) can fix. However, it’s also clear that killing this supernatural beast isn’t a once-and-done event.
Each Halloween, Sawtooth Jack rises from the cornfields and makes his way into town. If Sawtooth Jack survives and reaches the church before the bell tolls midnight, then the town will be destroyed. If he’s slaughtered – and the candy and treats stuffed inside him...

My heart belongs to Halloween. Pumpkins, cornfields, bright orange sunsets, chilly air, masks, dead leaves on the dirty ground — the whole shebang. As long as I can I remember, I've been obsessed with all things Halloween; to me, it's the most wonderful time of the year. So I'm kind of already in the tank for David Slade's stylish little Halloween treat "Dark Harvest." Adapted from the novel by Norman Partridge, "Dark Harvest" is bloody fun; a treat bag full of Halloween imagery tailor-made to trick people like me into loving it almost unconditionally. However, the closer you look, the more flaws appear — Michael Gilio's script is underbaked, and the film feels like it just sort of runs out of steam instead of actually ending.
But oh, the atmosphere is a delight, and the Halloween vibes are off the charts. Slade and cinematographer Larry Smith overload the movie with...

Norman Partridge’s 2006 Bram Stoker Award-winning novel Dark Harvest introduced a grim Halloween hunt set in a scenic 1963 hamlet. Like a campfire tale, the brisk novel embraced Halloween iconography and small-town rot, told with an almost poetic prose and simplicity befitting of a Twilight Zone episode. Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) and screenwriter Michael Gilio (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) adhere to the novel’s essence, unleashing Halloween carnage that upstages the barebones story.
Dark Harvest reveals the ominous origins of its title straightaway with an introduction to the annual Halloween hunt that takes place in a picturesque but cursed rural town. Every Halloween, the legendary Sawtooth Jack rises from the cornfields, where he must fight through a gauntlet of murderous teen boys, all eager to snuff him out lest he make his way to the town’s church by midnight. A new urban legend comes to life in the new trailer for Dark Harvest. The trailer starts with the ominous, almost Grimm fairy tale-esque narration that says, “It’s Halloween. You know what that means. Old Sawtooth Jack is gonna rise from the cornfields. It’s gotta be stopped. Kill or be killed.” David Slade returns to a grittier tone after the Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night director took on one of the chapters in the Twilight franchise, helming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The director also returns to features after Slade tried his hand at television with Breaking Bad and Black Mirror. He also once set to make a series, Red Bird Lane, with Crispin Glover and Susan Sarandon until Max (HBO Max at the time) opted not to continue with it.

It's September, which means it's officially Halloween season. What's that? You think Halloween doesn't start until October? Well, you're wrong! Get the hell out of here! Okay, now that we've cleared that up, let's talk about "Dark Harvest." This new horror film looks like it could be a fun little Halloween treat. Based on the trailer below, it's loaded with style, and it has a killer premise: a small town has to deal with a local boogeyman or else face the wrath of a terrible curse. I hate it when that happens.
The film is based on the book by Norman Partridge, and comes from David Slade, the filmmaker behind "30 Days of Night." You might recall that this flick was supposed to arrive back in 2021. Then the pandemic got in the way, and it kept getting delayed over and over again. Now it's ready to arrive next month, just in time for Halloween proper.

It’s kinda crazy to think that since 2010 (when he released the massively popular “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse“), filmmaker David Slade has only worked on one feature film, 2018’s experimental Netflix project, “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” Sure, over that time, he has worked quite a bit with quality TV series like “Breaking Bad,” “Hannibal,” and “American Gods,” but he hasn’t done really anything in film.

"If you're born in this town, you're cursed." MGM has unveiled an official trailer for a horror movie called Dark Harvest, the latest film project from horror filmmaker David Slade. This was originally set to open in 2022, but was delayed and now the studio is dumping it direct-to-vod to watch at home starting in October during Halloween season. I guess they didn't think a theatrical release is worth it? Adapted from the book of the same name, it's set in a small town where the young men must confront a creature each year in the hopes that they will win a chance to leave. A legendary monster called October Boy terrorizes residents in a small Midwestern town when he rises from the cornfields every Halloween with his butcher knife and makes his way toward those brave enough to confront him. RPG fans rejoice! The Super Bowl TV spot for the upcoming "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" is here. The new sneak peek reminds us just how action-packed this highly anticipated film is set to be — and to be honest, it looks like it might be one of those movies that has the power to ensnare even those who have never played the beloved game that inspired it.
The new trailer fits a ton of fight scenes and general fantasy mayhem into a 30-second clip, and it sure does pack a punch. It even gives us the general gist of the plot: There is a great evil that must be faced, and the hero decides to do it alongside a team. If that sounds like most fantasy-action films, that's because it is like most of them. Tropes are tropes for a reason.

It’s never too early to start preparing a must-see Halloween viewing list, and we’re seeing quite a tempting lineup of upcoming horror movies for the fourth quarter of ’22. I figure there’s no better time than the present to start filling up your calendar – and to that end, we’re here to help in your quest for the newest and latest in spooky cinema.
Before I forge ahead, I should point out the release dates on some of these titles are still a little… well, squishy. I just wanted to make sure you knew that going in, because in this post-pandemic age, nothing seems certain anymore. A couple of drop-dates are still unknown, subject to change at a moment’s notice (it happens) and might even get pushed to next year. Of course, we’ve got our eyes laser-focused on the latest horror news, so feel free to...

That’s likely no longer the case, however, as we’re now less than a month from that day with no marketing in sight.
But we expect the marketing campaign for Dark Harvest will begin soon, as the MPA has just officially handed the upcoming feature film adaptation an “R” rating this week for…
