The high-profile film and TV production facilities Iskandar Malaysia Studios have been sold to Singapore’s Ghy Culture & Media.
Ghy has paid RM8.8 million ($1.98 million) for an 80% stake in Studio Management Services, investment company, to Rk Media Ventures Sdn Bhd and Cl Media Holdings. According to a regulatory filing Ghy and SMS must pay a further RM26.5 million ($5.99 million) within five days to state-owned Granatum Ventures to buy 100% of Iskandar Malaysia Studios. That gives a total purchase price of RM35.3 million ($8 million) for a controlling 80% stake. The remaining minority can be bought out in five years.
The filing said that Iskandar Malaysia Studios’ net asset value at the end of 2022 was RM32 million ($7.23 million).

Best-known for her action roles in “Skyscraper,” with Dwayne Johnson, and Simon West’s “Skyfire,” Asian star Hannah Quinlivan has joined director Jesse Atlas’s sci-fi feature “Soul Assassin.”
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Bruce Willis, Andy Allo, Nomzamo Mbatha, Dominic Purcell and Mustafa Shakir.
Atlas’ feature debut, “Soul Assassin” is described as a female-led, mind-bending sci-fi thriller. In it, a female former black ops soldier joins an experimental drone warfare program to hunt down her husband’s killer. When the technology is stolen, however, the hunter becomes the hunted.
“This is a groundbreaking genre film bound to be an audience favorite and an international dream cast of both veterans and rising stars adds even more appeal,” said Atlas, who wrote “Soul Assassin” along with Aaron Wolfe, based on their short film “Let Them Die Like Lovers.”

Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. That’s about one-tenth of the Hollywood blockbusters it’s competing with. Can it hold its own against the competition, or is resistance to the Disney Empire futile?

In an unusual show of consensus, reduced-price titles, a new PVOD title, and several independent films dominated all streaming charts. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” still #5 in theaters in its eighth weekend, followed its initial 31-day HBO Max play with PVOD availability. It placed #1 on both revenue sites, and was #3 and the best high-price title at those who rank by transactions.
The good news is “Godzilla vs. Kong” is thriving on PVOD at $19.99. The bad news is an awful lot of people don’t seem to be aware of the value of HBO Max, where it costs $14.99 for one month and allowed customers to see the same film in March. It suggests an ongoing marketing issue and, at the start of 2022, there will be another challenge when HBO Max customers realize that Warner Bros. titles no longer play day and date with theaters.

Though it will forever be associated with one brief mid-1970s heyday, the disaster-movie genre has made a stealth comeback in recent years, being a natural fit for a cinematic era dominated by CGI-laden action fantasies. Of course Hollywood has kept its hand in, with efforts like “San Andreas” and “Pompeii.” But there have also been parries as far afield as China, whose enjoyably ridiculous, volcano-centric “Skyfire” from late 2019 only reached the U.S. this year.
No country has been as assiduous in reviving that Charlton Heston spirit, however, as Norway — which has produced just three so far, but then that’s a not-inconsiderable share of its big-budget feature output in recent years. First there was the rockslide/avalanche/tsunami/flood whammy of 2015’s “The Wave,” then its self-explanatory 2018 sequel “The Quake.” Now there’s “The Tunnel,” unrelated to the aforementioned save that it obviously wouldn’t have been made...

Gerard Butler does more than just punch his way out of imminent apocalypse in Ric Roman Waugh’s sharp action film
One of the genuine guilty pleasures of last year’s lockdown releases was Skyfire, a spectacularly silly Chinese disaster movie in which Jason Isaacs builds a hotel on the side of a volcano and then tries to reassure everyone (in a South African accent) that “we’re all going to be fine!” After watching Gerard Butler get into a fistfight with the weather in Geostorm, I had similar expectations of this end-of-the-world action film about an impending meteor strike. But though originally announced with Chris Evans as star and Neill Blomkamp of District 9 as director, Greenland turns out to be the perfect vehicle for Butler and director Ric Roman Waugh, reuniting after Angel Has Fallen for a sharply written and grippingly executed apocalypse pic that, like 2008’s breakout hit Cloverfield,...

Little has changed on the VOD charts this week. “News of the World” and “Tenet” still placed #1 on two of the charts we follow, although this week “News” ranked higher overall, placing #2 and #3 elsewhere. “Tenet” is on the lower half of two lists.
“News” at #1 at revenue-based FandangoNow, which has six premium-priced titles leading its list. It’s also the top title at Spectrum Channel, which ranks by transactions, and near the top at Amazon TV and Google Play. That suggests Universal has another breakout success with its strategy of providing three weeks in theaters before PVOD.
“Tenet,” which opened in theaters in September, continues to add revenues at $5.99. “News,” now in its fifth weekend in theaters, was #4 at the box office this weekend with a total of $9.6 million so far. (Netflix bought its international territories.) With a reported budget of $38 million before marketing, the studio may see a decent profit all in.

It’s no great leap forward in filmmaking, but the big-budget disaster movie “Skyfire” does prove that China is now capable of producing its own brand of utterly preposterous and enjoyably trashy popcorn entertainment for a global audience. This thrill-packed tale about an angry volcano wreaking havoc on thinly written characters at a luxury island resort plays like a souped-up and much better remake of Irwin Allen’s 1980 turkey “When Time Ran Out.” Starring a predominantly Chinese cast and energetically directed by British action specialist Simon West, “Skyfire” did Ok without setting the Chinese box-office alight in December 2019 release. It should be a hot number with action fans when launched on VOD in North America by Screen Media on Jan. 12.
While several recent Chinese productions including “The Wandering Earth,” “The Captain” and “The Bravest” have depicted large-scale calamities, none have embraced the tried-and-true disaster movie format with the unashamed reverence and gusto of “Skyfire.

There’s at least one good thing to say about the new Chinese disaster movie directed by Simon West: It doesn’t take long for the volcano to erupt. Considering the bloated running times of so many similarly styled American extravaganzas, the admirable efficiency of Skyfire means that you don’t have to waste a lot of time sitting through endless exposition.
Most of which is thoroughly familiar, anyway. The film is set on a Pacific Rim volcanic island where a typically reckless entrepreneur, John Hammond … I mean, Jack Harris (Jason Isaacs), has created a luxury resort and theme park ...

"Nature doesn't love. Nor does it hate. It simple builds as it destroys." Screen Media Films has debuted an official US trailer for a volcano disaster action movie titled Skyfire, arriving on VOD in January after New Years. This is another of these epic Chinese movies that is made by a western filmmaker, even though it's made by and features a cast of mostly Chinese people. Tianhuo Island is as beautiful as a paradise. It almost makes people forget that it is located in the "Ring of Fire" the world-famous Pacific Rim volcanic belt. The volcano surprisingly erupts again, and it becomes a battle with nature to get off the island while fiery death and destruction rains down from the big mountain. Skyfire stars Jason Isaacs, Xueqi Wang, Hannah Quinlivan, Shayn Dou, Liang Shi, and Alice Rietveld. This looks a lot like Skyscraper, a very similar disaster plot setup with...

Chinese-produced disaster movie proceeds on strictly generic lines, as a volcano theme park is imperilled by an actual eruption
‘This might be the safest place on Earth!” Uh oh. A flamboyant entrepreneur is reassuring a group of tourists in a glass elevator at his volcano theme park – built on an active volcano in the Pacific Rim. The tourists are about to descend 150 metres inside the volcano. A cute kid pushes her nose up against the glass in wide-eyed wonder. Double uh oh.
Skyfire is China’s first big budget disaster movie, an earnest emotional blockbuster with disappointing special effects that barely register on the Richter scale of excitement. What it does have, however, is a credible female hero in the Tom-Cruise-dangling-out-of-a-helicopter-in-Ray-Bans mould. She is Meng Li (Hannah Quinlivan), a hot-headed young volcanologist who works at the theme park. When the volcano suddenly erupted 20 or so years ago, it killed her scientist mother.

British Hollywood director Simon West has been ordered by a Beijing tribunal to return $200,000 in directors fees to Chinese firm Hongmaisui Hms Entertainment in a legal dispute over an unmade 2014 film.
Hms filed the case with the Beijing Arbitration Commission back in 2016, after the production was derailed by difficulties in procuring a visa for West that left him unable to enter China for pre-production at the scheduled time. The commission issued its award decision in December 2019.
As of late July, however, West — who is best known for U.S. action films like “Con Air” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” — has yet to pay the determined sum and has stopped communicating on the matter, the Hms side says.
On Tuesday, the company officially filed an arbitration petition in Los Angeles to get the American legal system to recognize the Chinese decision, allowing them to pursue and collect on West’s U.

Chinese-made films “Sheep Without A Shepherd,” “Skyfire” and “Gone With the Light” dominated weekend takings at the mainland Chinese box office. Hollywood’s holdovers were consigned to the lesser rankings.
“Shepherd” is a remake of 2013 Indian thriller “Drishyam” and tells the story of a man trying to cover up for his daughter’s killing of a police officer’s son. It stars Xiao Yang, Tan Zhuo and Joan Chen, and was directed by Malaysia’s Sam Quah.
Directed by the U.K.’s Simon West, “Skyfire” is an action film about holidaymakers caught up in a volcanic eruption while on a tropical island.
“Skyfire,” which premiered at the recent film festival in Hainan (which markets itself as China’s tropical island), opened commercially on Thursday. It topped the rankings with an opening day take of $4.25 million.

Cannes — What excites young adult audiences? Three answers are authenticity, entertainment and the environment, according to a Glance study presented Monday at Cannes Mipcom trade show. The presentation also underscored radical changes in TV consumption now sweeping not just the U..S and U.K. but now major territories in Western Europe. Five takeaways:
1.Authenticity
This “relates to programs that are about young adults and which reflect their reality in an authentic manner,” said Glance content insight director Avril Blondelot, citing the buzzed-up South Korean four-part show “Nagi’s Long Vacation,” about a thirty-something woman at a crossroads who decides to quit her job and leave her boyfriend to embark on a new journey. Distributed by TBS, and bowing in July, the show scored 20% above its slot average in 20-34s. Multiple programs charting the search for meaning or a transition into the workspace

With three films and a web series in his kitty, Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar is in a good space in his career. The "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" fame actor says there is a big shift in his approach towards his work, and so, he does not take any opportunities for granted.
"I was just 19 years old when I did my first film and had no plan to act or to become an actor. It was like a paid holiday so that I could earn good pocket money and then party more with my friends. When I finally found my calling, I started learning and enjoying the craft. Now, I take the process seriously.
"Perhaps that is why I do not take the success and criticism (to the heart). With time, the one thing that I have learned is, never taking the opportunity for granted. Initially, the success went to...

Actor Jisshu Sengupta, who is balancing a film career in multiple languages and is geared up for his sci-fi web series "Skyfire", says slowly but surely Bengali cinema is reaching out to the national audience as the theatrical release of regional films has expanded.
Bengali cinema has had an impact at international film festivals with the work of iconic filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Ritwik Ghatak among others, apart from movies by filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh, Aparna Sen, and Goutam Ghose or Kaushik Ganguly and Srijit Mukerji. But now across India also, movies are getting a platform for release.

Actor Jatin Goswami, who featured in Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, will make his digital debut with sci-fi show "Skyfire", in which he essays an intelligence agent.
Jatin said: "I'm playing the character Sayed Ali Hassan, an intelligence agent who is brutally honest. He is on this once-in-a-lifetime kind of case that takes him to some extremely dark places."

"Skyfire" will premiere on May 22 on ZEE5. The show also features Prateik Babbar, Sonal Chauhan and Jisshu Sengupta.
The story revolves around the drastically changing weather that brings life to a standstill, as well as touches upon human trafficking and children going missing in Delhi. Amidst all this tension, an intelligence agent, a journalist and a teacher go on a hunt to solve the mystery.

Chinese-based companies Meridian Entertainment and Base FX are shopping “Skyfire” at Cannes, China’s first big-budget disaster movie, about a volcanic eruption. The film is directed by British helmer Simon West and stars Britain’s Jason Isaacs, Wang Xueqi (“Iron Man 3”), Shawn Dou (“Wolf Totem”) and Hannah Quinlivan (“Skyscraper”).
“Just as ‘The Wandering Earth’ was the breakout film for the sci-fi genre, we hope ‘Skyfire’ can do the same for the disaster genre,” Meridian’s CEO Jennifer Dong told Variety. “The China market is finally sufficiently large that it can support the making of a big-budget special effects film like this one just for the local market, yet this kind of VFX-heavy film is also something that viewers worldwide can understand and appreciate. We hope we’ve shot a Chinese film for a global audience.”
The film tells the story of people at a tropical resort who get caught up in a volcanic explosion.
