Classic horror entries like The Thing, Alien, and even The Shining wield isolation as a weapon, trapping their protagonists in place and leaving them perilously vulnerable to threats- inhuman or otherwise – to evoke chills. It’s a simple tool that horror frequently exploits for maximum discomfort, whether physically, psychologically, or even socially. No matter how filmmakers insulate their characters, it results in despair and loneliness for the characters and chilling unease for the viewer. This week’s streaming picks center around isolation-based horror movies.
These titles showcase various forms of isolation, from remote settings to extreme quarantines, to leave you on the edge of your seat.

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to “Obex” following its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The surreal, black-and-white fantasy film was directed by Albert Birney (“Strawberry Mansion”) who wrote the script with Pete Ohs (“Jethica”). Birney also stars in the film.
The film was widely praised for its imagination and style, with Variety calling it “entrancing and singular” and comparing it favorably to “I Saw the TV Glow.” It follows Conor Marsh (Birney), a man living a secluded life with his dog, Sandy, until one day he begins playing Obex, a new, state-of-the-art computer game. When Sandy goes missing, the line between reality and game blurs, and Conor must venture into the strange world of Obex to bring her home.
The producing team includes Birney, Ohs, Emma Hannaway and James Belfer, the founder and CEO of production company Cartuna. “Obex” marks the company’s third collaboration with Birney,...

The Wild Robot‘s Oscar prospects may have gotten a boost on Wednesday as the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its sixth annual award winners. The animated feature won Best Original Score for a Studio Film, defeating three of its Oscar rivals: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave. The last of this year’s Best Score Oscar nominees, The Brutalist, competed in another category at the Scl Awards, winning Best Original Score for an Independent Film.
So does that mean the Oscar will come down to The Wild Robot and The Brutalist? In the Scl Awards’ previous five years, they agreed with the Oscars three times: Joker (2019), Soul (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). In 2021, the Scl voted for Encanto (studio) and The Green Knight (independent), but the Oscar went to Dune. And for 2022, the Scl picked Nope (studio) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (independent), while the Oscars opted for All Quiet on the Western Front.

It’s rare for a studio to become a brand, but A24 has managed it. Since its humble beginnings as a New York-based distribution company founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in August 2012, A24 has become synonymous with quality for film lovers, the place that releases the must-see indies everyone is talking about.
A24’s first film was the little-seen and little-loved “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” from Roman Coppola, which hit theaters in February 2013 to muted fanfare. But the movie that really put the company on the map was “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s wild crime comedy that released in March that same year and established many of the conventions associated with the brand: Artful neon cinematography, shocking content and stylized violence,...

Turning Ebon Moss-Bachrach into gravel and setting fire to Joseph Quinn is one thing, but the biggest challenge that "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" faces involves one of Marvel's most powerful villains: Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson). With the doors to the Baxter Building now open, the new trailer showed us what the Devourer of Worlds looks like — well, his silhouette and the back of his noggin, at least. Sure, it would have been awesome to catch a full glimpse of our new team of heroes going head-to-massive-head with the Devourer of Worlds, or maybe even a snippet of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) getting blown away by Ineson's world-rattling rasp. However, let's never forget that it could have been a whole lot worse. We might have been met with yet another giant Thanos-colored fart pretending to be one of the most terrifying entities in the universe.

Steven Soderbergh is back with his first film since 2023’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” His latest offering, “Presence,” is a haunted house thriller that plays with the horror subgenre’s conventions by assuming the point-of-view of its central, unsettled specter. The film continues Soderbergh’s ongoing fascination with playing with conventional form, and it marks one of the few times that the director has stepped foot into full-fledged horror territory.
“Presence” is not the first big-screen ghost story to subvert viewers’ expectations. The genre has, in fact, inspired more than a few unpredictable, jaw-droppingly inventive movies. Here are five you should watch that, like “Presence,” will keep you guessing and anxious to see what happens next.

Among another impressive stack of new horror titles looking to spook audiences at this year’s Sundance, “Rabbit Trap” joins a growing library of psychological folk horrors that have recently offered more (deeply) unsettling creeps than out-and-out scares.
Bowing in the Midnight slot in Park City on Friday and the feature debut of Brit director Bryn Chainey, the film doesn’t just boast an Oscar nominee in Dev Patel among its somewhat limited cast (there are only three characters in the entire feature), but comes with the backing of Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision.
Set in 1976 in rural Wales, “Rabbit Trap” centers on Daphne Davenport (“Blue Jean” breakout Rosy McEwen), an experimental electronic musician who, alongside her troubled husband and collaborator Darcy (Patel), has moved to a remote abandoned farmhouse in the countryside. It’s here where, equipped with a wild laboratory of analogue synthesizers, tape decks, theremins and very little else,...

Babygirl has become an all-time hit for A24. The independent studio and distributor's newest movie is an erotic thriller written and directed by Bodies Bodies Bodies' Halina Reijn that follows a CEO (Nicole Kidman) beginning an illicit affair with an intern (Harris Dickinson) while exploring her identity and her sexual proclivities. The Babygirl release kicked off on Christmas Day 2024, debuting at the No. 7 spot on the domestic chart, a position that made it the third-best of the holiday frame's new releases, which also included Nosferatu (No. 3), A Complete Unknown (No. 6), and The Fire Inside (No. 10).
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Babygirl is projected to take in a 3-day gross of $4.6 million at the domestic box office by the end of its second weekend in theaters. Former CIA officer John Kiriakou has given a high accuracy score to Dev Patel's true story movie about the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which came out in 2019. Patel's best movies see him in thrilling roles, portraying captivating characters that are highly unique depending on the story he's contributing to. This includes everything from his theatrical debut in 2008's Slumdog Millionaire, to his first directorial movie as the lead character in 2024's Monkey Man. His performances are often memorable thanks to the way he commands the screen whenever he's front-and-center.
Beyond original stories for the big screen, Patel has also starred in multiple adaptations of existing works. This includes 2019's The Personal History of David Copperfield, where he played the title character, and 2021's The Green Knight, where he was the Arthurian knight Gawain. However, his talent also stretches into movies based on real events, like portraying mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan in...

This week’s episode of Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is notable for a few reasons – one, it is dark and scary, adding in some creepier layers to the otherwise cheerful tone of the latest live-action Lucasfilm joint. There’s a lot of Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), the adorable blue alien. And one of the main characters has a dramatic change of heart.
But the most notable distinction of this week’s episode was that it was directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert aka the Daniels, the filmmaking team that won the Best Director and Best Picture Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” This is, in fact, their first directorial effort since their multiverse comedy swept the Oscars.
And the Daniels directing an episode of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” isn’t an outlier either. The first season of the ambitious new series, which channels 1980s nostalgia through...

A24’s “Death of a Unicorn” is on its way.
The feature, written and directed by Alex Scharfman, stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega “accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard E. You can watch the brand-new trailer below.
“Death of a Unicorn” also stars Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani and Jessica Hynes. It was produced by Ari Aster’s Square Peg and Ley Line Entertainment, who were responsible for A24 favorites “The Green Knight” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The movie was shot by Larry Fong, who has shot movies for J.J. The animated short “An Almost Christmas Story” completes Alfonso Cuaron’s trifecta of Christmas stories.
This time, he turned to “The Green Knight” director David Lowery to helm the storytelling. “It was almost exactly three years ago that I read the script for the first time,” says Lowery. He happened to be feeling very festive, and it was an instant yes to sign on. “It feels exactly the right thing to do. I love Christmas. I love the tradition of Christmas movies, and I love short Christmas films,” Lowery says. He also loved the idea of what Cuaron had done with “The Shepherd” and “Le Pupille,” creating a new series of films for Disney+ which hopefully, along with “An Almost Christmas Story ” would become perennial classics.

Jon Watts: The Same “Core Influences” That Made George Lucas Create Star Wars Inspired Skeleton Crew
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is finally here with the pirate-themed space opera series adding a new flavor to the galaxy far, far away. The series was created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford and received mostly positive reviews. During a recent interview, Watts spoke about some of the influences behind the series, admitting to being inspired by creator George Lucas.

In the interview, Watts talked about being influenced by the same sources that inspired Lucas when he was preparing to launch his space opera franchise back in the 1970s. As a result, it is endearing to see Watts follow in Lucas’ footsteps while also trying to leave his own imprint on the saga, and here is what the filmmaker had to say.

Early in the new Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, we meet our young hero, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). He is in a bedroom that looks an awful lot like one you might have found in any suburban house here on Earth in the Eighties, and he’s playing with a pair of dolls that are roughly the size and design of the action figures that Kenner released around the original Star Wars film trilogy. Wim and his best friend Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) have mock lightsaber battles while waiting for the bus to school.

“Star Wars” has always been, on some level, for children. That’s neither condescension nor criticism: George Lucas created a swashbuckling fairy tale set in space, and its mantle has been taken up by successive generations of filmmakers who encountered it at a formative age. But, with the exception of “The Phantom Menace,” “Star Wars” stories have rarely been about children. That’s the value proposition of “Skeleton Crew,” the latest TV series from a franchise that now largely exists on the small screen. In a way, it’s also the most true to the saga’s DNA — or at least a particular strain of it.
Though “Star Wars” hasn’t delivered a blockbuster to the multiplex since 2019, Lucasfilm has maintained a steady drip of releases on Disney+. These projects have been variable in quality, from “Andor” on the high end to “Obi-Wan Kenobi” on the low, but they’ve...

Jon Watts and Christopher Ford are reuniting for a nostalgic journey through a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. While the latter made his writing debut with the sci-fi dramedy Robot & Frank, Watts and Ford enjoyed their rise to success by teaming with each other for the 2014 horror movie Clown, the crime thriller Cop Car and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man: Homecoming. As Watts became busy with the webslinging trilogy, Ford went on to write and produce the well-received coming-of-age thriller The Clovehitch Killer and rewrite the adaptation of Chaos Walking.
With Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the duo are working in tandem as the creators and showrunners for the latest installment of the Lucasfilm franchise. The Disney+ show focuses on a group of children from a suburban Republic planet who, after discovering a derelict spaceship, venture off and become stranded in the galaxy far from home.

The Slumdog Millionaire sequel announcement with the original cast return is uncertain (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
When Slumdog Millionaire hit theaters in 2008, it wasn’t just a film but a global phenomenon. The story of Jamal Malik, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who wins big on Indian Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, was loved by audiences worldwide. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy, the movie became a massive success, sweeping eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
It launched the careers of its stars, notably Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, and remains a beloved cultural landmark to this day. Now, over 15 years later, the magic of Slumdog Millionaire may be rekindled. While there has been no news of a sequel to the movie since its release, fans may be surprised to learn that there is hope that the story might continue after all.

Um, what? In a move we did not see coming, Bridge7, a production company founded by former Netflix executive Swati Shetty and former CAA agent Grant Kessman, has acquired the film sequel and TV rights to Slumdog Millionaire. I’m going to give you a moment to process this.
Are you good? Okay. If you remember, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire hit the lottery in theaters in 2008. The film stars a young Dev Patel as the older version of Jamal, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who becomes a contestant on the show’ Kuan Banega Crorepati?’ When interrogated under suspicion of cheating, he revisits his past, revealing how he had all the answers. Based on the book Q&a by Vikas Swarup, Boyle’s film serves as Patel’s feature debut after an extended role on the TV series Skins.

Mother Mary gets a first-look image, showing Anne Hathaway's role as a glamorous pop star. Directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the upcoming A24 movie chronicles the relationship between a pop star and a fashion designer, with Alba Baptista, Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Michaela Coel set to costar. Vanity Fair now shares a behind-the-scenes image from Mother Mary, showing Hathaway in character wearing a golden leotard with an accompanying golden cloak and a golden tiara, of sorts. Though the image doesn't reveal much, it does seemingly feature Hathaway posing in some kind of backstage area at a theater. Check out the image below:

Barry Keoghan broke the hearts of millions across the globe with his Oscar-nominated portrayal of a hapless character in The Banshees of Inisherin. The actor then stopped hearts in terror with his sneaky cameo as the horrifically disfigured Joker in The Batman. However, it was The Killing of a Sacred Deer that solidified his status as a force to watch out for.

Despite his Oscar-nominated performance, Barry Keoghan continues to surprise across all genres including war dramas (Masters of the Air), thrillers (Saltburn), comic book epics (Eternals), fantasy adventures (The Green Knight), and even an upcoming Western historical biopic about the notorious cowboy outlaw, Billy the Kid.
When an accomplished actor such as himself gets entangled in rumored relationship dramas helmed by celebrity gossip columns, it is unlikely for fans to sit idly by and watch his reputation get deconstructed over social media.

With “House of the Dragon” closing out its second season last week, it might be time to look elsewhere to get your dosage of dragons and family drama.
Showrunner Ryan Condal revealed in a Monday press conference that writing for Season 3 was already underway, with prep set to begin this fall and production aiming to start up in early 2025.
Though Condal said he hears fans who are hoping the “Game of Thrones” spin-off series could release every summer, he pointed to the massive scale of the battles and apologized for the wait. That said, a hopeful outlook could see “House of the Dragon” airing in late 2025, but 2026 is looking more likely.
In the meantime, there’s plenty of movies that might scratch your “House of the Dragon” itch, from fantasy classics like “Lord of the Dragons” to dragon-filled action flicks like “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “How to Train Your Dragon,...

If you've seen "The Mandalorian" and enjoyed the dynamic of a lone wanderer acting in loco parentis to a precocious wayward child, then how about a dad figure acting in loco parentis to four precocious wayward children? That's the premise of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew," the upcoming Disney+ series starring Jude Law as a Jedi character called Jod Na Nawood, which just unveiled its first teaser trailer. The "Goonies"-esque premise teams Jod up with a team of young adventurers: Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Kb (Kyriana Kratter), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong).
Some of the biggest names in "Skeleton Crew" are behind the camera. The series will feature episodes directed by Jon Watts (the most recent "Spider-Man" trilogy), Lee Isaac Chung ("Twisters"), Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Mandalorian"), David Lowery ("The Green Knight"), Jake Schreier (upcoming Marvel movie "Thunderbolts"), and -- most excitingly -- the Daniels, whose mind-bending...

The Skeleton Crew is finally coming together. Lucasflim showed off the first trailer for Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew as part of its presentation at D23 Friday, where audiences got a look at the coming-of-age series.
Skeleton Crew centers on a group of kids lost in a galaxy far, far away — as they try to make their way home. The show hails from Jon Watts, who directed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, and Christopher Ford, Watts’ frequent collaborator. The Mandalorian duo Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni executive produce the show, which stars Jude Law and is set in the New Republic era of the Star Wars canon (or in simpler terms, the years after the Empire’s fall in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.)
A crew of top-flight directors worked on the project, including Everything Everywhere All At Once‘s Daniels and The Green Knight‘s David Lowery. The...
