Charly Clive will star opposite Steve Carell in his upcoming HBO comedy series from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.

The show was originally picked up back in May. Along with Carell and Clive, “Ted Lasso” alum Phil Dunster is also attached to star.

The half-hour series has been given a 10 episode order. The official logline states that the single-camera show is “set on a college campus, centering on an author’s (Carell) complicated relationship with his daughter (Clive).”

Clive is one half of the “Britney” sketch comedy duo with Ellen Robertson. The duo previously adapted “Britney” into a BBC Three pilot in 2023. “Britney” originated as a comedy stage show that Clive co-wrote about her experience of being diagnosed with a brain tumor at 23 years old. Her recent TV credits include “The Lazarus Project,” “Pure,” while she has also appeared in films like “All My Friends Hate Me.”

Frances O’Connor’s Emily proved the big hit of the 33rd edition of Dinard Film Festival, the French seaside festival that spotlights UK and Irish cinema, for French audiences that closed on October 2.

Emily won the Golden Hitchcock for best film, with Emma Mackey receiving the award for best performance. The period drama also scooped the audience prize for best feature film. The film premiered at Toronto, and marks the directorial debut of actor O’Connor.

Frances de la Tour has called the decision to cut her scene from the 2003 romcom Love Actually “odd”.

The Harry Potter and Seventies sitcom star had shot scenes for the film as a woman called Geraldine, the terminally ill partner of the headmistress (Anne Reid) at the school attended by Karen’s (Emma Thompson) son.

The audience was supposed to see a moving scene in which the pair bicker over their differing tastes in fancy sausages and display wicked senses of humour, before cuddling up at night.

Jurassic World Dominion is hoping to snare the top spot from Top Gun: Maverick at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, after two weeks at the number one for Paramount’s Tom Cruise hit.

Universal is distributing Jurassic World Dominion at 708 sites – Universal’s fourth biggest UK-Ireland opening of all time, behind No Time To Die (772),Downton Abbey: A New Era (746) and Downton Abbey (730). The Colin Trevorrow-directed title opened with 55m from early markets last week, and expands to North America, UK/Ireland, China, France, Germany, Australia and Spain this weekend.

To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of speaking to its co-writers, Tom Stourton and Tom Palmer – while the former also plays the leading role Pete, in the movie. We look back over their long-standing friendship, and their dynamic as a writing-duo. They tell us why they decided to star/or not star in the film, and the casting of Dustin Demri-Burns. Pete (Tom Stourton) is ready to leave his youthful indulgences behind and settle down with his girlfriend, Sonia (Charly Clive). The top box office story this weekend is the obvious one: “The Batman” (Warner Bros.) made an impressive $61 million in its second weekend at the multiplex, with only a 51 percent drop from its opening. Matt Reeves’ reboot of the D.C. Comics’ franchise is now at $238 million domestic, $463 million worldwide.

“The Batman” now looks like it could corral $400 million or more domestically. That would put it ahead of “Batman v Superman,” which opened better in 2016 but then collapsed (-69 percent second weekend) and totaled only $333 million (unadjusted). Cary Joji Fukunaga’s long awaited Bond flick “No Time to Die,” the final instalment featuring long-time lead Daniel Craig, will close this year’s EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival, presented by Joji Fukunaga (“Beasts of No Nation”) himself and the film’s Oscar-winning cinematographer Lunus Sandgren (“La La Land”).

“This is the first time Cary Joji Fukunaga and Linus Sandgren collaborated on a film project, yet the result is just the kind of visual spectacle we hoped for given their artistic portfolios,” said the festival in a release accompanying the announcement.

This will be Joji Fukunaga’s first time attending EnergaCamerimage in person, although his film “Jane Eyre” and the “True Detective” pilot episode he directed both screened at the fest. Sandgren is becoming something of an EnergaCamerimage regular, having presented in person two films on which he worked, Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” and “First Man.”

10 films on the list for low-budget independent films.

Harri Shanahan and Sian A. Williams’ documentary Rebel Dykes and Ryan Andrew Hooper’s comedy-thriller The Toll are among the 10 titles longlisted for the Discovery award at the 2021 British Independent Film Awards (Bifas).

Six documentaries make the list, including Annika Ranin and Sean Fee’s Boarders, following a group of British skateboarders on their journey towards the sports Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. Ranin and Jasmin Morrison are also on the longlist for breakthrough producer, announced as part of the new talent selection earlier this month.

Variety Director to Watch Prano Bailey-Bond (“Censor”) and BAFTA-nominated “After Love” filmmaker Aleem Khan are among the 39 filmmakers longlisted in the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) new talent categories.

The 39 longlisted filmmakers will be invited to join BIFA’s Springboard scheme, a tailored program of professional development, peer-to-peer support, mentoring, networking and skills enhancement aimed to nurture emerging talent as they build on the success of their first features.

The final five nominations in each category will be announced on Nov. 3. Winners will be revealed at the ceremony on Dec. 5.

Andrew Gaynord’s feature debut is set for release in 2022.

BFI Distribution has acquired UK comedy All My Friends Hate Me, for release in the UK and Ireland in 2022.

The deal was finalised just ahead of the film’s UK premiere at the 65th BFI London Film Festival on Friday (October 8). WME Independent handled the sale with BFI Acquisitions Manager Laura Dos Santos. it has already been acquired for North America by Super.

The film – which premiered at Tribeca – is Andrew Gaynord’s feature debut. Gaynord’s previous credits include Netflix series The Characters.

All My Friends Hate Me is...

Super Ltd has acquired North American rights to All My Friends Hate Me, the UK comedy horror thriller directed by Andrew Gaynord that world premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

In the film, a college reunion goes awry when Pete (Tom Stourton) suspects his friends may be out to get him. As their weekend getaway grows more and more uncomfortable, should he be worried about his safety, or is it all in his head? Stourton and Tom Palmer wrote the script for the pic, which also stars Charly Clive, Georgina Campbell, Joshua Mcguire and Antonia Clarke.

Palmer is the producer.

Super Ltd’s Mason Speta negotiated the deal with Endeavor Content on behalf of the filmmakers.

Tom Stourton co-wrote the screenplay and stars.

Boutique label Super Ltd has acquired North American rights to Andrew Gaynord’s UK feature directorial debut and Tribeca selection All My Friends Hate Me.

The film received its world premiere in the international narrative competition and centres on a college reunion that turns sour when Pete suspects his friends may be out to get him.
