From what I've seen of Abish, I never cared much for his sense of humour but that changed yesterday. From a guy who constantly looks like he's trying too hard, I think he is beginning to find his comedic voice.
Whoop! is a very well crafted personal stand-up special that hits all the right notes of good stand-up comedy. Excellent set-ups, great (I mean great) punchlines, memorable call backs, and even (subtle) doses of morality.
The stand out moments are when he is reluctant to use Hindi swear words, especially the mic tap moment - brilliant.
What is clear as day from these 60-odd minutes is that Abish is a smart and observant comedian with a unique take on the average everyday, pretty much the trifecta to sustain a great comedy career. It makes me wonder where this Abish was all these years.
I must admit some of the comedy hit close to home since I am a Punjabi Delhi guy married to a Malayalee Catholic but even if you're not (we can't all get it right all the time, I forgive you), it is more than worth your while.
Good stuff Abish, hope to see more of you in your comedy.
