The strip mall that X. Franklin and Jack Logan were standing outside of was not the originally intended shooting location, but when the parking lot lights never turned on in the other lot, the production quickly moved down the road to this one. The strip mall in Orland Park, Illinois was torn down years later, and its unintended appearance in the film has allowed it to be immortalized.
The original Director of Photography hired onto the film ultimately stood everyone up on the first day of production without notice or explanation, and threw the entire shooting schedule into uncertainty. Fortunately, Allec Isshac was able to step onto the production and get all necessary scenes shot before one actress had to leave for a move to California. Shortly thereafter, Eric Woltman became the primary DP for the remainder of production utilizing the same camcorder, a Sony HDR-FX1. Even director Nicholas J. Michalak shot certain scenes on lower grade camcorders to keep the production moving forward when schedules required it. During the final months of post-production a few insert and establishing shots were done in high-definition with the Sony HDR-CX580V.
The original premise behind Vic Simmons, a private investigator, helping people in between the cracks in the law where the police cannot came from The Equalizer (1985). However, Nicholas J. Michalak had not watched the show until the script had already been completed. He learned of the show's premise from the insert booklet from a CD compilation of TV series theme music he bought many years beforehand.
The characters of Kurt Demerest and his girlfriend Sandra Wilder were not originally intended to appear in the film. However, Heather Schlitt was too good of an actress to not utilize in the film, and so, the part was written into the movie along with Kurt. Unfortunately, the original actor cast as Kurt had to bow out after the shooting schedule got thrown into disarray after the production lost its original Director of Photography. The role of Kurt would not be recast for another three months.
The character of Katie Bishop was originally named as Sandra Wilder, but was changed late into scripting. However, when a new character was being written in as Kurt Demerest's girlfriend, the name was utilized again. Ironically, the actress cast as Sandra originally auditioned for the role of Katie Bishop.
