Scott Derrickson’s new Apple Original movie “The Gorge” answers only one of these questions, and unfortunately for philosophers everywhere, it’s the hot sniper question. But the rest of us will cheerfully make do. “The Gorge” is an unexpectedly romantic movie coming from the “Sinister” and “The Black Phone” director, but it’s also a gnarly monster flick with memorable beasties galore.

Miles Teller stars as Levi, a former Marine sniper who works freelance, and he’s super lonely. When a powerful figure played by Sigourney Weaver enlists Levi for a mysterious, year-long mission, he’s got nothing tying him down.

The title of this movie is the two-word answer to a most unexpected question. Namely: “What do you get if you cross American Sniper, The Last Of Us, Stranger Things, Aliens and Love Actually?” Writer Zach Dean appears unashamed of his influences on this former Black List spec script, and director Scott Derrickson has much fun with them, serving up a frothy B-pic stew. Amazon MGM Studios has officially shifted the release date for Mercy, a sci-fi thriller starring Chris Pratt and directed by Timur Bekmambetov. Originally set to premiere on August 15, 2025, the movie will now hit theaters worldwide on January 23, 2026. Johnny Depp and Penlope Cruz are to star in their fourth movie together, Day Drinker, from the producers of the John Wick franchise. The two actors have shared the big screen three times so far, in Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Kenneth Branaghs Murder on the Orient Express. While their movies didnt resonate strongly with critics - their highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes is Murder on the Orient Express with a 60% score - they have made $1.1 billion at the global box office. The bulk of that gross comes from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Now, Lionsgate confirms Depp and Cruz are working together again on Day Drinker. From the producers of John Wick, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, its marketed as an action thriller by director Marc Webb, who is known for his work on 500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man, and its sequel.

In what might be his biggest starring role in years since he was let go from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, Johnny Depp will star alongside Penélope Cruz in an action thriller for Lionsgate and director Marc Webb, the studio announced on Monday.

Depp and Cruz are teaming up on screen for what will be the fourth time in a thriller called “Day Drinker.” They previously starred together in “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

“Day Drinker” follows a cruise ship bartender who meets a mysterious day drinker — only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways.

Webb is directing from an original spec screenplay by Zach Dean. Dean is the writer of “Fast X,” “The Tomorrow War,” “Deadfall,” and the upcoming “The Gorge” starring Anya Taylor-Joy.

Lionsgate has closed a deal for Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz to reteam for a fourth time in “Day Drinker,” the studio announced on Monday.

The film will be directed by Marc Webb (“Snow White”). Depp and Cruz previously co-starred in the features “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Lionsgate is launching international sales at AFM. Chelsea Kujawa is overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Dan Freedman negotiated the deals for the studio.

The film is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who produce the “John Wick” franchise for Lionsgate, and Adam Kolbrenner, producer of “The Tomorrow War,” “Free Guy,” and “Prisoners,” and Zach Dean, who also wrote the original spec screenplay.

Amazon MGM Studios is doubling down on its original film business.

The studio arrives at MIPCOM Cannes with nearly all its eggs in Earth Abide‘s basket, an original series starring Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark). The show is a post-apocalyptic tale, based on George R. Stewart’s 1949 novel, about the fall of civilization from deadly disease — which Chris Ottinger, head of worldwide distribution, Amazon MGM Studios, says represents “a lot of the feeling of now, when it’s a very strange time to be on this earth.”

The executive sat down with The Hollywood Reporter in Cannes to discuss the studio’s slate of shows and films getting their distribution launch at MIPCOM including the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Accountant 2 and the sequel to A Simple Favor.

The Josh Brolin/Peter Dinklage starring Brothers is a great reminder to check out an underrated rom-com from 2020. Brothers is a riff on the Schwarzenegger/DeVito comedy Twins, with Brolin and Dinklage playing criminal twin brothers who reunite to pull off one last score. The cast of Brothers 2024 is what makes the movie click, with the leads sharing great chemistry, while Glenn Close plays their untrustworthy mother and Brendan Fraser is the maniacal police officer chasing after them.

Despite the great ensemble, Brothers has received mixed to negative reviews, and currently sits at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. Regardless, the comedy appears to have performed well for streamer Amazon during its first week of release, and some viewers really enjoyed the chemistry between Dinklage, Brolin and Closel whether that will lead to a Brothers 2 is another question. Elevation gets its first trailer, unveiling the new post-apocalyptic action film. Directed by George Nolfi, Elevation tells the story of a single father, played by Anthony Mackie, who embarks on a dangerous quest with two women, played by Morena Baccarin and Maddie Hasson, to save the life of a young boy. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting with a monster threat, and it marks Mackie's only major release before the arrival of Captain America: Brave New World next February.

IGN now releases the first trailer for Elevation, teasing what's to come from the intense action thriller. The trailer sees Mackie's character caring for a sick boy in an area of the Rocky Mountains before venturing out across a boundary that demarcates where seemingly monster-dominated territory begins. Baccarin, who is best known for appearing in the Deadpool films as Vanessa, co-stars, with her character and Hasson's joining him on the mission.

“Detroiters,” the beloved cult comedy series from Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson, is coming to Netflix on Oct. 15.

Both seasons of the Michigan-based sitcom will be available to stream on the platform in the U.S., Variety has confirmed. The series has been previously available to watch on Comedy Central and Paramount+.

“Detroiters” debuted in February 2017 on Comedy Central and ran for two 10-episode seasons before the network canceled it in December 2018. It starred Richardson and Robinson as best friends and neighbors Sam Duvet and Tim Cramblin, who work together at an advertising agency producing low-budget television commercials. The deal that is expected to install Skydance chief David Ellison as chairman, CEO and hopefully savior of Paramount Global is a labyrinth of entities, trusts and transactions. Also potentially complicated, assuming the deal closes sometime next year, is the question of control.

Skydance sources say 41-year-old David will select the board and run things entirely independent of his father, Larry Ellison, also known as the world’s fifth-richest man, worth an estimated $176 billion, per Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index tally on Sept. 18. Exclusive: Sam Richardson is set to join the cast of the thriller Sacrifice, a film that will be directed by Romain Gavras. Richardson joins an A-list ensemble that includes Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy and Salma Hayek Pinault. Gavras co-wrote the script with Will Arbery.

The story is set at a high-end charity gala that is raided by a violent group of radicals on a mystical quest to fulfill a prophecy. Iconoclast and Robert Walak, the president of Iconoclast’s Film and TV division, will produce with Gavras. Taylor-Joy and Evans also produce, with Arbery executive producer.

The Emmy-winning Richardson was recently seen starring in the second season of Apple’s The Afterparty. Other recent credits include The Tomorrow War and Veep.
