The door to a Star Trek actor returning to a series is never fully closed. There are always options and workarounds to bring characters, even those long dead, back to the franchise. That's one of the beauties of science fiction.
The third season of Star Trek: Picard did a wonderful job bringing back characters from twenty plus years past, including Data who had died. The season was so successful, proving that fans wanted more of these characters they'd loved since 1987. And that's why there is such a calling for Star Trek: Legacy, a new series that focuses on Captain Seven of Nine [Jeri Ryan] and would bring back legacy characters even if not on a regular basis.
Gates McFadden is more than willing to return as Dr. Beverly Crusher as she told TrekCentral in a recent interview. Though she had a wonderful arc on Picard, there was much left to...

Kate Mulgrew had the distinction of playing the first female captain in the Star Trek franchise. Headlining the sci-fi spinoff series Voyager, the actress played Captain Kathryn Janeway for seven seasons and went on to voice the role in Star Trek: Prodigy. She also starred as Red in the show Orange is the New Black.
Mulgrew recounted in her 2015 memoir about her struggles in life, which included the death of her two younger sisters and being a r*pe survivor. The actress also reportedly got pregnant while filming her breakthrough show Ryan’s Hope and gave up the child for adoption. The storyline was reportedly written into the show.

In a tell-all memoir, Star Trek: Voyager‘s Captain Janeway actress Kate Mulgrew described some really tumultuous times of her life. The memoir revealed her unplanned pregnancy and giving up her child for adoption, alongside mentioning being r*ped at knifepoint. However, Mulgrew described one incident as more harrowing than the gruesome crime she endured.

Despite the tendency to dismiss animation as a "kiddie genre," animation is, in fact, a full, vibrant art form of its own. While it shares many things in common with live-action filmmaking, animation also offers unique opportunities to depict stories and worlds that may be difficult to render in live-action. This makes animation excellent for the kind of sci-fi adventure that is Star Trek's bread and butter.
Fortunately, these opportunities have not been entirely ignored by the producers of Star Trek over the years. With three animated Star Trek shows, dating as far back as 1973, we can see how the strengths (and limitations) of animation have helped to shape the universe.
Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1974)
The second-ever Star Trek series shares a lot in common with its predecessor. With effectively the same cast and writers, it is arguably just more of the original series. Even so, animation...

Robert Picardo is enjoying a major return to form these days. The 71-year-old actor is back with the franchise after two-plus decades away. He'll make his live-action return to the franchise with the expected 2026 debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, reprising his role of The Doctor, once again. It's a role that he's awfully familiar with, having played the character for nearly 200 episodes.
He appeared in 164 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, and 17 more episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy. The latter of which was his first return to the franchise since Voyager ended in 2001. Though, with Prodigy and unlike Starfleet Academy, this wasn't live action. Instead, he returned to Star Trek to perform a voice role for the first time in years.
Prior to Prodigy, the last time he leant his voice to the franchise was for Star Trek Online in 2014.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a series that has a ton of potential behind it. Featuring major names like Holly Hunter, and Paul Giamatti and returning names from Star Trek like Tig Notaro, Oded Fehr, and even Robert Picardo, the show has a ton of reasons to be excited. It's our first real look into the life and times of a Starfleet Cadet and set against the backdrop of a rebuilding federation, it seems very interesting.
Plus, now there's a renewed focus for Star Trek to promote a more optimistic version of the Federation and the future (Section 31 notwithstanding), so it's likely the showrunners for the show will follow Strange New Worlds' presentation more than not. Coupled that with the next era of Star Trek actors and actresses and you have yourself one heck of a series.
At least in theory. We're never sure if anything is going to be good or bad,...

It's not surprising that the subject of Star Trek: Legacy would come up at a convention that includes the stars of the potential series. That happened at Spacecon in San Antonio, TX with a panel that included Star Trek: Picard's Michelle Hurd who played Raffi Musiker on Star Trek: Picared. Excited fans asked yet again for more information about Legacy and if the show would happen. [via Trekmovie]

It's been five months since the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy released on Netflix. The streaming channel made all twenty episodes available, allowing fans an epic binge, but things have been silent since then. Netflix has made no mention of a season three renewal, despite outspoken fans who have undertaken yet another campaign.
Now, the creators of Prodigy, Kevin and Dan Hageman, are writing a live-action Lego Ninjago movie for Universal. [via Screenrant] This isn't a surprise to fans of the Ninjago television series as the brothers were the executive producers and writers for the first nine seasons. So why wouldn't they jump at the chance to write the script for a live-action movie? And it really is good news for them. For Prodigy fans? Not so much.

After spending seven years as the Emergency Medical Hologram on Star Trek: Voyager and returning for the second season on Star Trek: Prodigy as the same character, Robert Picardo is onboard a third Star Trek project. Picardo joined Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and will play The Doctor as a 900-year-old hologram. The series, which was recently picked up for a second season, will, most likely not premiere until some time in 2026.
Picardo recently appeared on a local television show in Toronto (Tvo Today: The Agenda) to discuss his upcoming journey on the new show and what viewers can expect. We also learned how his inclusion in the series came to be. [via Trekmovie]

Robert Picardo has made a return as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager not only on Star Trek: Prodigy, but he's one of the main characters for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the newest series coming from Paramount+. Should Prodigy get picked up for a third season, there's no reason to believe that The Doctor won't still be part of the team. Not that fans are complaining. We'd missed the acerbic wit of the Emergency Medical Hologram and were thrilled to see him in the first look for season two of Prodigy, which is available on Netlix.
Had Picardo not made his way to Prodigy, though, there was another option awaiting him as Mike McMahan, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, had every intention of bringing the doctor aboard the Cerritos to tutor Tendi, according to an interview he gave to Trekmovie. Star Trek is set to debut a new show in either late 2025 or early 2026. The show is called Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and will not only feature a young cast of newcomers, but will be tentpoled around series lead Holly Hunter and main villain Paul Giamatti. They'll also feature returning stars like Oded Fehr, Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro.
It's set in the rebuilt Starfleet Academy of the 32nd century, not long after the events of Star Trek: Discovery came to a close. It's a continuation of that story, in a way and more characters from Discovery may make cameos in the Academy series. So there's potential for characters to keep crossing over.
It has the potential to be a fun and entertaining show, even if it's marketed to the CW/Teen demographic. Still, potential is one thing, proof of concept is another. We have no idea if Starfleet Academy is going to be good.

The first season of the next series in the Star Trek franchise, Starfleet Academy, is now filming in Toronto, but we shouldn't expect to see it until at least 2026. That hasn't stopped Paramount+ from making a surprising decision regarding the series. It has renewed the brand-new series for a second season already. The announcement came at the Star Trek Universe Panel at New York Comic Con. [via Trekmovie].
This is much earlier than the timeline for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which didn't get a second season renewal until almost four months before the release of its first season and even for Star Trek: Discovery which didn't get renewed for a second season until the first season had already begun airing. While Paramount+ does have a track record for early renewals, this one is more surprising as the entire premise of the show is different from anything that's ever been done in Star Trek.

We've already talked about the news that Robert Beltran was allegedly set to return to Star Trek in a live-action setting. To recap, according to the former Star Trek: Voyager star, Beltra was set to return to the franchise in Star Trek: Picard's second season. Before he was set to return in Star Trek: Prodigy, he was asked about reprising his role for Picard.
This would have seen him back as Chakotay once again but with a twist. He would be a villain. Luckily for fans, this wouldn't have been Prime Chakotay, the soft-spoken, earnest man who was Kathryne Janeway's dutiful number two for seven years. No this would've been an evil, more Mirror Universe version. He would have been married to Seven of Nine and would have been a vile man.

When Star Trek: Voyager was nearing the end, the producers introduced a romance between Robert Beltran's Chakotay and Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine. The fans didn't see that one coming as there'd not previously been any type of chemistry between the two characters, and the relationship just didn't make sense. Nevertheless, Voyager ended with the pair still a couple as far as we knew.

Although "Star Trek: Voyager" concluded in 2001, multiple characters from the series have returned throughout the franchise at large to remind Trekkies that they all still exist and are still going about their Starfleet careers. Both Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Tuvok (Tim Russ) appeared on "Star Trek: Picard," with the former playing a regular role on the series. The reference-heavy "Star Trek: Lower Decks" makes "Voyager" references all the time, and even had an episode set on board the U.S.S. Voyager.
Most notably, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) not only had a cameo in the 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," but a holographic version of the character played a large role in the animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy." That same show also featured the real-life Janeway, the Doctor (Robert Picardo), as well as a subplot involving Chakotay (Robert Beltran), the captain of the experimental ship the U.S.S.

On a flight not so long ago, Ella Purnell managed to terrify the woman sat next to her after accidentally giving her a glimpse of the recent viewing history on her laptop.
“It was basically 50 shows about serial killers,” she recalls, speaking over coffee in a café near her flat in East London (which she admits she’s rarely been in due to excessive recent travel). “But specifically female serial killers, because they’re very different from male serial killers.”
As Purnell notes, the concerned neighbor was carrying a baby, which she then “literally moved” away from her.
“So I had to explain. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m actually researching, it’s part of my job… I promise you, I’m not a monster,'” she recalls. “But I’m not sure how convincing I was.”
The Brit was, thankfully, telling the truth. A year on,...

The streaming channel that has billed itself as the "home of Star Trek" isn't really the home of Star Trek. Things began to change when Paramount+ cancelled Star Trek: Prodigy in April 2023. Now, the channel has removed all ten of the classic Trek movies, six from The Original Series era and four from The Next Generation era.
So where can you find these movies now? On MGM, which requires a subscription which is $6.99 per month after a 7-day free trial or $58.99 per year. If you'd prefer, you can still rent the movies on Amazon Prime Video, but generally, one of the purposes of paying for a subscription to a streaming channel is so you don't have to spend extra money to watch the series or movies you love.
All three of the J.J. Abrams' Kelvin Timeline movies are still available on Paramount+, and Star Trek Beyond is available on Netflix until October 31st.

Star Trek has been quite different since 2017 when Star Trek: Discovery launched. Star Trek: Picard followed, along with Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and they all offered something different to fans and new viewers. Not all original Trek fans were enthused, but there is one series that has been consistently well-received, and even when cancelled by Paramount+, it found a home at the biggest streaming channel, Netflix, because of fan devotion. Here's why this is so important for the future of Star Trek.
We don't know what's around the corner. Will Alex Kurtzman continue to head up the franchise? According to the most recent deal he inked with CBS Studios in 2021 [via Deadline], he'll be leading Star Trek until 2027 or so. But that doesn't mean authority can't be handed over to someone else who maybe has a different outlook on Trek and where to go from here.

If you're a fan of a certain age, you remember how cool it was to go through Toys R' Us and see Star Trek action figures lining the wall. Designed and produced by Playmates, the small action figures had a very successful run for over a decade, pumping out new toys every so often of our favorite characters.
It felt like anything made between 1988 and 2000 got a toy. The films? Toys. The shows? Toys. The books? Toys. If there was a potential figure to be made, they made it. Everything from James Kirk and Khan Nooien Singh to a cadet Jean-Luc Picard and a cadet Worf. Playmates really milked the franchise for all it had.
Then the toys were done, shows and films like Enterprise and Star Trek 2009 didn't get the same support with merchandise and the partnership ended. Until it was revived only a couple of years ago. Star Trek: Prodigy led the way,...

Star Trek: Prodigy is an exceptional animated series. Not only is it Star Trek-centric with episodic storylines interwoven with season long arcs, it's a masterful way of teaching new viewers about the franchise. A non-Star Trek viewer could start watching season one of Prodigy, and, by the end of the season two, they'd have a strong knowledge of the Federation and Starfleet, which are key to understanding Star Trek.
But some people don't like animation no matter how good it is. Some fans hesitate to give it a chance because they don't feel it's canon even though they've been assured that it is. They want to see it in live-action. They want to see actual actors and not just hear their voices. That's understandable. You like what you like.

When it comes to any Star Trek, some fans will always stake their claim to who the "best" character from any series is. For Star Trek: Voyager, many would say that character is The Doctor. A hologram meant for short-term situations of a medical emergency variety, over time, becomes so much so. The Doctor as he was so affectionately named, became the breakout character of the show thanks in part to his actor, Robert Picardo's portrayal.
His evolution, growth, and dynamic actor gave The Doctor all the necessary skills (so to speak) to become the series best and most well-written character. At least in the eyes of many fans. So it wasn't a surprise that he'd be called back into action for the next live-action series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek fans are reading for potential the last major news date of the year; the New York Comic Con. Usually a quiet affair, the event is usually Star Trek's last stop on the road to the end of the year. The franchisee usually gets most of its news out at the San Diego Comic-Con or one of the more major Star Trek-focused conventions, but in recent years the Nycc has started to develop a reputation as a news-heavy affair.
Last year, of course, was the Kid Cudi X Star Trek crossover. While that may not be a huge hit among fans, it was a seriously significant event, This year may not be very different in that regard. There could be some major pieces of news to come out of the event, especially with the Lower Decks finale coming days later.
So here are five things we hope to see at the event.

Star Trek: Voyager fans have been calling for a live-action Admiral Janeway show since Star Trek: Prodigy began, if not before. Voyager ran for seven successful seasons, and Prodigy, where Kate Mulgrew lends her voice to Admiral Janeway, just finished up its second season. And the cry for more of Janeway continues. Why? Because Captain Janeway is/was one of the best captains in Starfleet, and Kate Mulgrew herself is simply an amazing human being.
So when she was asked about returning to live action at the San Diego Comic-Con, she said that "once you do it, and I did it for seven years, I don't know if it can be recaptured." So a return for her would have to be "novel," "authentic," and "impeccably done."
In the clip posted to Tiktok by @onlythejaneway, Mulgrew mentions Patrick Stewart's show, Star Trek: Picard. She didn't specify as to why it was mentioned,...

The Star Trek franchise is pushing 60 years old. It was a show that came out in 1966, and most of the kids of that era are now all in their 70s and 80s. They sustained the franchise for decades and were among the key demographics for the revival franchise in the 1980s; Star Trek: The Next Generation. They hung through 20-plus years of uncertainty, only to be rewarded.
The youth of the franchise kept it going, even if they were never the targeted audience. Sure, Star Trek: The Animated Series helped, but that was among the worst television of its era and as far as kid's shows go, hardly qualifies as such anymore.
Now, we have shows like Star Trek: Prodigy, a show directly made for and targeting the younger fans among us. A show whose future is in limbo. A show that the fandom can't afford to lose at this point in time.

Both the first and second season of Star Trek: Prodigy are available now on Netflix, and by now, most fans know the series brought Wesley Crusher into the mix with Wil Wheaton returning to reprise his character from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was a the perfect set-up for the Traveler, and he fit in wonderfully with the band of kids who were trying to get into Starfleet.
It was a welcome return and gave us a better look at what Wesley's life is like as as a Traveler as opposed to the brief scene we saw with him at the end of Star Trek: Picard's second season. Prodigy was able to build the character more and gave Wheaton more room to grow into the character.
In an interview with Daily StarTrekNews, Wheaton shared his excitement about being brought back to the universe and how "extremely into it" he was.

Sarah Catherine Hook (The White Lotus), Jameela Jamil (The Good Place), Lucien Laviscount (Emily in Paris), and Lukas Gage (Smile 2) have joined the cast of People We Meet on Vacation, the forthcoming adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestseller from Netflix and 3000 Pictures, on which we were first to report.
Details as to the quartet’s roles are under wraps. Tom Blyth and Emily Bader topline the pic from director Brett Haley (I’ll See You in My Dreams), which marks Henry’s first book adaptation to go into production.
The film follows free-spirited Poppy and routine-loving Alex, who have been unlikely best friends for a decade, living in different cities but spending every summer vacation together. The careful balance of their friendship is put to the test when they begin to question what has been obvious to everyone else — could they actually be the perfect romantic match?

It's widely accepted among Trekkies that no "Star Trek" series starts with its best foot forward. Almost every single series, from the 1960s all the way up to the Paramount+ era, has a rocky first season, presenting clumsy storytelling and strange character conceits that many Trekkies look back on with a wince. Generally speaking, a Trek series doesn't hit its stride until about season three.
I will hasten to note that even when Trek shows are struggling through their "bad" seasons, they usually still feature strong characters and a dynamic setting, so a curious viewer will not have to endure years of bad TV before it gets good. They'll just have to endure some awkward writing until it gets excellent. If one wants to watch "Star Trek: The Next Generation," one could simply start with season 3, and then ask a Trekkie friend to recommend vital episodes from seasons one and two.

From low-budget romps to high-energy blockbuster films, Star Trek has become one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of all time. The last time Trekkies saw Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in live-action was via a video call to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis." In animation, however, we've been spoiled with the volume of Janeway in recent years. In "Star Trek: Prodigy," a holographic version of Janeway, also played by Mulgrew, served as an ersatz mother figure for the show's teenage protagonists. The real-world Janeway also eventually became involved in the action, and she too was impressed with Dal (Brett Grey), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens, to the point where she helps them apply to Starfleet Academy. In the show's second and final season, Janeway even lead a quest to rescue her old first officer, Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), and brought the "Prodigy" kids along.

Something went viral on social media over the last week, and I kind of hate it.
The video is a faux trailer for a “live-action” movie adaptation of The Simpsons, featuring a succession of famous actors as the main Simpsons characters.
Amongst those at play are Adam Sandler as Homer Simpson, and Kristen Wiig as Marge. Jacob Tremblay “plays” Bart, McKenna Grace portrays Lisa, and Will Ferrell stands in for Ned Flanders.
Steve Buscemi plays C. Montgomery Burns, Neil Patrick Harris as Smithers, Ben Stiller as Moe, and John C. Reilly as Barney. Steve Carell is Principal Skinner, Zach Galifianakis is Chief Wiggum, and Kumail Nanjiani is Apu.

Star Trek: Prodigy, Yellowjackets, Arcane, and Fallout. All hit shows and one actress has been a part of all of them. And that would be the one and only Ella Purnell! She's such a talent and has been a part of so many great projects that we all enjoy. Of course it's probably Fallout on Prime Video that has become a breakout role of sorts for the actress. But no one can deny the amazing other productions and roles she's been a part of.
That's why it was so special to celebrate her, and get to know Purnell a bit more at Fanexpo Chicago 2024! And while not all of you fans were able to make it, that's what we're here for. We had the opportunity to attend, including Purnell's panel, and have provided highlights for you below. It'll be like you were there! Read on below on everything we learned about Purnell herself,...

Exclusive: Beverly Hills-based management and production company, Underground, has bolstered its team with the addition of Aaron Folbe as Manager, Deadline has learned.
Folbe joins after a little over two years at Industry Entertainment, where he served as Lit Coordinator. In his new role, he will continue to focus on supporting and developing the careers of writers, directors, and performers.
Folbe’s new role comes shortly following a major win for his clients Adam and Daniel Cooper, who in June sold their short story “I Used To Eat Brains, Now I Eat Kale” to Amazon MGM Studios for feature development, with Ryan Gosling and his production company General Admission attached to produce. Folbe took on the Cooper twins as clients before his time at Industry Entertainment — while serving as an assistant at Artists First — and closed the deal in between his exit from that company and his Underground hire. The...

Since the launch of CBS All Access -- which is now called Paramount+ -- in 2017, Paramount has debuted a massive spate of new "Star Trek" shows. This began with "Star Trek: Discovery," followed quickly by "Star Trek: Short Treks," the "Next Generation" throwback "Star Trek: Picard," the two animated shows "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Prodigy," and the Enterprise-set "Discovery" spinoff "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." There was also a collection of animated shorts called "Very Short Treks."
As of this writing, only "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks" have new episodes forthcoming. This is in addition to a TV movie called "Star Trek: Section 31," set for release in 2025, and a series called "Starfleet Academy," which is currently in development.
The new wave of "Trek" shows has caused no small amount of controversy among fans, with Trekkies arguing that some of them are...

“Star Trek: Prodigy” dropped its second season on Netflix on July 1, and series star Kate Mulgrew is holding out hope the animated series will be renewed for Season 3.
Fresh off her appearance at the “Prodigy” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Mulgrew said the energy in the panel’s ballroom was “electric.”
“I had a full auditorium on Sunday morning for the panel,” she said. “They were thrilled. They were delighted! They’re desperate for this kind of television. I don’t think there’s anything quite like it on television now, because it’s teaching ‘Star Trek’ to a new generation to young children in an entirely novel way.”
