What a powerful celebration of women's strength and the beauty of inclusivity. With a compelling storyline, it sheds light on the struggles and triumphs of women challenging societal norms while championing acceptance and equality. The characters are richly crafted, embodying resilience and compassion, making their journeys deeply relatable and inspiring. Stunning performances, heartfelt dialogues, and a narrative brimming with hope drive the message home with impact. The movie's vibrant direction and soul-stirring music amplify its emotional resonance. Wakhri is more than a film; it's a call to embrace diversity and empower everyone to find their voice. The Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at the University of Michigan has a film series. It's excellent. Tonight was 'Wakhri' by Iram Parveen Bilal. Film was inspired by Qandeel Baloch. There's another film in February and another in March. Best thing? They're free! If you're looking for something to do on an idle weeknight, look no further!
The series is curated by Veerendra Prasad, who is always on hand to set the stage for the films and interview the director when available afterward. Iram was delightful, and you should jump at the chance to see her film if you can!
This was held at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. Excellent. Well directed, excellent performance.

The movie was bold, thought-provoking, and deeply impactful. It masterfully portrayed the multifaceted nature of the protagonist's character, delving into her emotional journey and how it shaped her actions and identity. Each layer of her personality revealed a raw and compelling narrative, reflecting her strength, vulnerability, and resilience. The film also shed light on societal attitudes toward bold, unapologetic women, exposing the harsh realities they often face. It's a poignant commentary on how courage and individuality are both celebrated and condemned, ultimately leading to tragic consequences. The storytelling was gripping, and its emotional depth left a lasting impression.

I was so fortunate to see Iram Parveen Balal's fantastic film WAKHRI at the Bentonville Film Festival. We drove many hours to catch it and it was so worth it! Beautifully cast, meticulously directed, with gorgeous cinematography by Ludovica Isidori, superb editing by Aarti Bajaj and wonderful performances by Sohail Sameer, Tooba Siddiqui, Shees Sajjad Gul, and the entire cast. Aside from being a brilliant cinematic masterpiece, the message of hope and solidarity with marginized communities everywhere comes through loud and clear. Thank you Iram for making this very important film against all odds. May it launch into a world that needs it very much!
