      In his 1990 book, Behind the Mask of Innocence, film historian Kevin Brownlow confirmed that Paramount disposed of the last known print of The City Gone Wild in 1971, after it showed early signs of decomposition. The incident prompted a complaint from preservationist David Shepard of the American Film Institute, which ultimately convinced the studio to revise its standards for film disposal.
