Parenting a two year old isn't exactly Seventh Heaven for Jessica Biel. The actress stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to promote her new show The Sinner and started talking about raising her young tot Silas. When Stephen Colbert asked Biel how many of her home's surfaces were covered in "what you hope is chocolate," Biel said, "Every square inch." "And if it's not the hopeful chocolate, it's stickers, and Play-Doh, and gak, and crumbs and who knows," she continued. "Everything is covered with everything." Biel confirmed to Colbert that she and her husband Justin Timberlake are in the middle of their son's terrible twos. She talked about...

Anyone who isn’t poised to win the Oscar for Best Director is certainly entitled to hate Damien Chazelle, and there’s not an openly fascistic executive order in the world that can stop them. But, as of late, the infuriatingly accomplished “La La Land” mastermind has been making it very difficult to do so. As if it weren’t frustrating enough that his sensational, stimulating new film is a quantum leap forward from the comparatively airless “Whiplash,” Chazelle further endeared himself to many by giving the rare awards show acceptance speech that actually engendered a deeper appreciation for the honoree’s work.

All sing the praises of Frank Borzage, a gentle director fully committed to the idea of romance in an imperfect world. Sally Eilers and James Dunn make a go of marriage, despite their personal flaws and difficulties with communication. It’s hard to believe that films of this vintage portray behaviors as sensitive as this.

Justin Timberlake escaped the long arm of the law — but he couldn’t evade a gentle poke in the ribs from his wife Jessica Biel. A week after risking jail time by taking a photo of himself voting in Tennessee, Timberlake took a shot from Biel on Monday after the former “Seventh Heaven” star cast her own vote. Biel posted a trio of photos of herself on Instagram sporting an “I Voted” sticker on various parts of her face, including on her nose, over her eye and on her forehead. I don’t know what the hell goes on in the minds of the CBS suits, or why the hell they are dragging their heels about Supergirl’s future.
But it doesn’t look good.
Monday night at 8:00 I turned the television on to CBS, only to see that Big Bang Theory was on for the entire hour. This isn’t the first time the network has done this; so have other networks for other shows, and it’s almost always a sign that the show is struggling for life, that its ratings are not satisfactory enough for the suits to keep the show on the air.
CBS is not a network noted for niche or cult programming, or a network geared towards the “coveted” 18-34 slice of the Nielsen ratings. Their programming has been dominated by police procedurals (NCIS and its many spin-offs) and soapy dramas masquerading as law procedurals (The Good Wife,...

Back in October, Malcolm-Jamal Warner -- who played Bill Cosby's son on eight seasons of The Cosby Show -- spoke out for the first time on allegations by over 50 women that the comedian had drugged and/or sexually assaulted them, saying in part: "My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film, no matter what ... negative stereotypes of people of color, we've always had 'The Cosby Show' to hold up against that. And the fact that we no longer have that, that's the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale." Today, during an appearance on daytime talker The Real, Warner again held forth on the allegations, noting that while The Cosby Show has since been pulled from syndication, the films and TV shows of other prominent...

Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

A friend who was over to watch the game, who I often go to repertory movies with, later told another friend he had never seen me so excited. The third friend watching it with us, she’s a writer, was also excited. In her excitement she sent all of her twitter friends a picture. 'Cat People' 1942 actress Simone Simon Remembered: Starred in Jacques Tourneur's cult horror movie classic (photo: Simone Simon in 'Cat People') Pert, pouty, pretty Simone Simon is best remembered for her starring roles in Jacques Tourneur's cult horror movie Cat People (1942) and in Jean Renoir's French film noir La Bête Humaine (1938). Long before Brigitte Bardot, Mamie Van Doren, Ann-Margret, and (for a few years) Jane Fonda became known as cinema's Sex Kittens, Simone Simon exuded feline charm in a film career that spanned a quarter of a century. From the early '30s to the mid-'50s, she seduced men young and old on both sides of the Atlantic – at times, with fatal results. During that period, Simon was featured in nearly 40 movies in France, Italy, Germany, Britain, and Hollywood. Besides Jean Renoir, in her native country she worked for the likes of Jacqueline Audry...

Final Image Films created this supercut of Best Picture losers using only the final images from each film. Working backwards from last year's loser, The Wolf of Wall Street, to 1929 loser Seventh Heaven. You can see the full list of films here, but give it a watch first and see how many you recognize and how far back you can go before you really can't name any of them. Here's the same concept only with the winners instead.

Somehow, when none of us were looking, The CW became the preeminent geek network. I know. I’m as surprised as anyone, but maybe we shouldn’t be. The CW was created when both networks that aired Buffy the Vampire Slayer merged, after all. But still, how did this happen?
The CW launched in 2006 with shows like Gilmore Girls, America’s Next Top Model, Seventh Heaven, and One Tree Hill. Geekish programming had a small foothold on Thursday with Smallville and Supernatural, but the rest was tween girl bait (except for Friday Night Smackdown, aimed at… whoever watches pro wresting). One of their only two new shows was Hidden Palms, a wannabe The O.C. And they continued that way for awhile, making glossy teen soaps like Gossip Girl and 90210.
Contrast that with their current lineup, which includes Star-Crossed, The Tomorrow People, The Originals, Beauty and the Beast, Arrow, The 100,...

While "12 Years a Slave" won Best Picture, its helmer Steve McQueen lost Best Director to Alfonso Cuaron ("Gravity"). This marked the 23rd time in the 86-year history of the Oscars that there was a split in these two races. That translates into about 25% of the time. The most recent instance was last year when Ang Lee won his second Academy Award for helming the 3-D spectacle "Life of Pi" while "Argo" won Best Picture despite director Ben Affleck not being nominated. That was only the fourth time in Oscar history that the director of the Best Picture had been snubbed by the academy. The other instances: 1927/28: "Wings" won Best Picture; William Wellman was snubbed: Frank Borzage won Best Director for "Seventh Heaven"; 1931/32: "Grand Hotel" won Best Picture; Edmund Goulding was snubbed: Frank Borzage won Best D...

The 85-year history of the Academy Awards is rife with statistical oddities, and one that has the potential to play out this Sunday is among the most intriguing: a split between the films that win Best Picture and Best Director.
Though conventional wisdom has long held that only one film will walk away with both prizes on Oscar night, many pundits are predicting that the awards will instead go to two different movies this year, with "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuaron expected to snag the Best Director statuette, while "12 Years a Slave" (or "American Hustle," depending on where your loyalties lie) is the favorite to win Best Picture.
While such a split has occurred just 22 times since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences started handing out trophies in 1929, four of the first five ceremonies produced a divide between the Best Director and Best Picture prizes. "Wings," dubbed the original...

Chinese platforms Youku and Tudou registered 3.5m screenings for the online film festival.
The fourth edition of Unifrance’s MyFrenchFilmFestival.com — running Jan 17 to Feb 17 — more than quadrupled its viewing figures this year.
French cinema export agency Unifrance, which organises the event, reported that the online film festival generated 4 million screenings, against 750,000 in 2013 and 1.3m in 2012.
The month-long initiative - featuring 10 features and 10 shorts which have not been widely sold internationally - ran on 20 partner platforms as well as the dedicated MyFrenchFilmFestival site, which attracted some 100,000 subscribers this year.

This is the second article in a three-part series.
Earlier this month, the acclaimed writer/producer/director Joss Whedon spoke at an Equality Now benefit dinner and suggested that the word “feminism” be removed from the English lexicon. According to Mr. Whedon, the word is problematic because it assumes that gender equality is not the “natural state” but something that needs to be achieved. Though several self-purported feminist bloggers have criticized this idea, Whedon’s speech does raise some interesting questions about how prejudice can hide away in the depths of language and rhetoric.
Thankfully, we have reached a point where shouting sexist comments is socially unacceptable and utterly disgraceful; anyone who does becomes ostracized by civil people. But that does not mean gender prejudices have been cured. The most corrosive type of sexism, and the one Whedon was getting at, is the kind embedded in words and institutions,...

Although "12 Years a Slave" is still favored to win Best Picture, its helmer Steve McQueen is locked in a tight race for Best Director with Alfonso Cuaron ("Gravity"). History favors McQueen winning as these two awards have lined up for 63 of the 85 years of Oscar. However, of the 22 times they have not, the most recent instance was last year when Ang Lee won his second Academy Award for helming the 3-D spectacle "Life of Pi" while "Argo" won Best Picture despite director Ben Affleck not being nominated. That marked only the fourth time in Oscar history that the director of the Best Picture was snubbed by the academy. The other instances: 1927/28: "Wings" won Best Picture; William Wellman was snubbed: Frank Borzage won Best Director for "Seventh Heaven"; 1931/32: "Grand Hotel" won Best Picture; Edmund Goulding was snubbed: Frank Borzage ...

(Click to enlarge) There.s no real formula one can use to win an Oscar . except this one. Researcher David Shaw broke down the history of Academy Award winner for Delayed Gratification, focusing on the winners in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. They start with Emil Jannings (who won in 1928 for both The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh) and Janet Gaynor (who won for participating in Three features that year: Seventh Heaven; Street Angel; and Sunrise). The chart is a hot mess of colorful lines. Staring at it for longer than a minute can induce migraine headaches. But here are a few of the major factors the research revealed. If you want to win an acting Oscar, you should: - Play a Fictional Character. - Play a North American (instead of a Brit or someone of a different, European descent). - Play someone who works...

I’ve said it many times before and I’ve no doubt I’ll say it many times again, but Canadians know how to make damn good horror flicks and guess what? They also know how to do great retro-grindhouse flicks too! If there’s one thing you can say about the Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter it’s that the one-night only event has provided some of the most diverse horror line-ups to be screened theatrically in its meagre seven year existence – and 2013′s line-up is no different, with screenings of the eagerly awaited remake of Aussie horror Patrick, from director Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed); Soulmate, from actress turned director Axelle Carolyn (Centurion); and the first film from former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s new production outfit Slasher Films, Nothing Left To Fear. And as if those weren’t enough, this years retro screening is the awesome, and formerly banned in the UK, Mark of the Devil, from director Michael Armstrong.
This years London event is scheduled for Saturday 26th October from 6.30pm and will be located for the third year at the Vue, West End. Tickets (costing...

Update: Active Entertainment has asked us to remove the trailer, which is not the official version or release and had been leaked by mistake. We apologize for the inconvenience and will post the actual Ghost Shark trailer once it is legitimately available. Last week, Sharknado took the world by storm. And rightly so. No film in the history of the medium has captured the pure, face-melting terror of both natural disasters and aquatic sea life. But Syfy doesn’t seem prepared to let the Sharknado hype die down, and so we get the trailer for the next surefire shark hit: Ghost Shark. The film stars Mackenzie Rosman (of Seventh Heaven fame), and like Sharknado, the premise is exactly what you think it is. Check out the trailer below. The premise isn’t quite as weird as Sharknado, but Ghost Shark more than makes up for that with a slew of terrible, terrible...

My earliest recollection of reveling in car races was a stock car race outside of Pittsburgh. I can still smell that fuel and hear the sounds of the engines revving up. And the sexuality that was in the air. The daredevil drivers and their swagger meandering and out of the crowd. Oh, just to touch a driver would have made my day. The fumes of the petrol mingled with the fast food and I was in Sixth Heaven. Now after seeing "Fast & Furious 6," I found myself in Seventh Heaven. Initially...

Like Night of the Hunter, Tod Browning’s Freaks or Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, The Road to Yesterday can be ranked among the UFOs of cinema. It’s place in the heart of Cecil B. DeMille’s work proves to be in itself very distinctive. We know that, during his entire life, DeMille had virtually only one producer—Paramount (the former Famous Players Lasky)—just like Minnelli was MGM’s man and Corman American International’s. Sixty-three of his films (out of seventy) were produced at Paramount. And, oddly enough, it is among the seven outsiders, situated within a brief period from 1925 to 1931, that his best activity is to be found (I’m thinking of Madam Satan, The Godless Girl, and The Road to Yesterday)–his most audacious undertakings. To top it off, for this uncontested king of the box office, his best films were his biggest commercial failures.

Good things come to those who wait ... at least in the case of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake.
Following a 10-month engagement (and a brief split), the couple of five years tied the knot in southern Italy on Friday, People confirms.
They exchanged vows in a rustic, intimate ceremony attended by close family and friends, such as Biel's former "Seventh Heaven" co-star Beverley Mitchell and Timberlake's "D--k in a Box" partner Andy Samberg. "It's great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends," the newlyweds mused.
According to an insider, the pair had taken "extra precautions" to keep the location under-wraps, even going so far as to have guests fly into Germany where they were then handed tickets to proceed to Italy. Guests did not know the final destination until they had those hot tickets in-hand. That's some serious planning.

Los Angeles (AP) — NBC slashes Jay Leno's "Tonight" pay in half, but forks out more than $8 billion to renew its broadcast rights to Sunday Night Football.
Rumors swirl about a salary cut for Matt Lauer and Alec Baldwin tweets an offer to cut his salary, even as the network gambles on a $4.4 billion bid for the Olympics.
Is this any way to run a network that's been stuck at No. 4 in the prime-time ratings for eight seasons?

Benoit Jacquot is giving us just that with Farewell, My Queen, the movie that opened the Berlin Film Festival to solid reviews and arriving in theaters in the heat of July.
Inglourious Basterds‘ Diane Kruger takes the lead as queen Marie Antoinette while Ghotocol‘s Lea Seydoux is by her side. Check out the trailer and poster below via Apple.
Synopsis:
Farewell, My Queen marks the return of acclaimed director Benoit Jacquot (A Single Girl, Seventh Heaven, Sade, Deep in the Woods,) and brilliantly captures the passions, debauchery, occasional glimpses of nobility and ultimately the chaos that engulfed the court of Marie...

Jeremy London will fly away all right—to the slammer if authorities prove the allegations against him. Prosecutors in Riverside, Calif., have charged the ex-Party of Five and Seventh Heaven star with domestic violence stemming from the scuffle he got into last month with his estranged wife Melissa Cunningham. A warrant was subsequently issued for his...
