To put it bluntly, Valentine’s Day is perhaps the most awkward national holiday. On the one hand you have lovely and joyful romantic partners eager to get their plans started, and on the other hand you have lovely but dissatisfied singles preparing to witness all the plans in action, right? No! There are also people who get together with their palentines and do something quiet or have an absolute rager, people who go to bars or clubs or parties for the sake of a good time, people who visit loved ones—who may have lost loved ones—to offer comfort and company, etc. Then, there are those of us die-hard cinephiles who don’t have a fulfilling holiday without popping in a film or two. Whether you have a valentine, palentine, or you’re a singleton, there’s something for everyone to enjoy under the “Sweet and Sour” sublist,...

You’ll find two of the finest films nominated for an Oscar this year in this category. One, “Incident,” which is stitched together from body-cam videos and other footage that captured the 2018 shooting of Harith Augustus in Chicago, is a less esoteric work than you might expect from director Bill Morrison, but it locates political resonances within that footage that make it as powerful as Dawson City: Frozen Time. By the time Morrison juxtaposes the different video feeds on the screen at the same time, he’s already presented a horrifyingly unambiguous picture of the racial bias that informs police shootings of Black suspects.
No less provocative is Smriti Mundhra’s “I’m Ready, Warden,” about the redemption that convicted murderer John Henry Ramirez seeks ahead of his execution by the state of Texas. The film empathizes with the regret felt by Ramirez, but it’s most powerful for the way it sits,...

The very first Academy Awards were held on May 16, 1929, in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Douglas Fairbanks, one of the biggest stars of his time, presented every single one of the awards. Right away, the timing was a little off, as the Oscars didn't adhere to specific calendar years for their awards. Instead, the awards were given to all the films released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928.
The Academy continued with the "straddle" schedule for its first five years, considering a "release year" to be August 1 to July 31. Perhaps wanting to keep things a little cleaner, the Academy expanded the year of the 6th Academy Awards, which considered all the films released from August 1, 1932, all the way to December 31, 1933. The 7th Oscars was the first Oscars to finally measure by a proper calendar year. The Awards have been following that pattern ever since.

The Academy Awards are a funny thing: At once steeped with tradition, yet desperately fighting to reinvent itself and retain relevancy at every turn. Although there are certain categories that have been with the iconic awards ceremony since the very beginning, others have come and gone. Sometimes this is in response to changes within the industry -- types of films waxing or waning in popularity, for example, or certain elements of filmmaking becoming obsolete -- while other times it's decidedly more political.
But the categories that the Academy Awards chooses to feature say almost as much about the state of the industry as do the films they celebrate. As Hollywood evolves, the Academy constantly finetunes its awards ceremony, and for that to happen, some categories have had to be jettisoned over the years. Pull out the awards speech you've been practicing in the mirror since you were 12 and put on...

It's hard to imagine anyone else sitting on that iconic Central Perk sofa other than the "Friends" we ended up with (leading to one of the best sitcoms of all-time). But had different choices been made, the crucial character of Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston, could've looked like Ross' (David Schwimmer) first ex-wife of the show, Carol, played by Jane Sibbett.

F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horrors was an unauthorized yet first adaptation of Bram Stoker 1897’s novel Dracula, the most influential literary source for the vampire legend. To evade copyright law, Nosferatu’s screenwriter Henrik Galeen changed the story from London to the fictional small-town of Wisborg, Germany, and also altered the characters’ names. But Bram Stoker’s estate filed suit, claiming the adaptation was an infringement. The German court ruling (in 1925) ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. As a result producer Albin Grau (also the film’s costume designer and art director) who produced only Nosferatu under his company banner, Prana Film was forced to declare bankruptcy. The orders were followed meticulously although one print, thankfully, found its way to the United States.

Demon Slayer's Infinity Castle trilogy of films has officially been announced, and is set to include the conclusion of the anime adaptation of the series. The first of the three Demon Slayer films will be released in 2025, meaning that the heart-racing finale is not too far off.
The Infinity Castle and Sunrise Countdown arcs are two of the most popular in the Demon Slayer manga, filled with the most action-packed fight scenes, tragic deaths, and, of course, the pivotal final fight against Lord Muzan and his Twelve Kizuki demons that will determine the fate of humanity. In order for these films to meet fans' understandably high expectations, they must include one element that may seem unexpected, or even unnecessary: filler.

Suzanne Collins' upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, is undoubtedly exciting, yet the novel has already proven that it is going to repeat one tragic element of Katniss's story, but even worse. In June 2024, it was announced that The Hunger Games would be returning with a new prequel novel called Sunrise on the Reaping. The book, which is already being developed into a movie, is going to be set during the 50th annual Hunger Games. Notably, those games were fought by Katniss and Peeta's District 12 mentor, Haymitch Abernathy.
The prospect of learning more about Haymitch's time in the Hunger Games is both exciting and daunting. Collins has already proven that she can successfully expand the world of Panem through her 2020 novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Thus, readers are expecting another riveting story. However, Haymitch's story is also concerning because there have already been hints within...

In the entire history of the Academy Awards, only six Best Picture winners have been 100 minutes or less. It seems that traditional, Oscar-bait "prestige" pictures tend to run long, attracting Academy voters with their sheer volume. Extra-long films are also a little rare, though, as only five Best Picture Winners are 200 minutes or more. Additionally, a whopping 18 Best Pictures have been between 160 and 195 minutes, so voters clearly don't mind longer movies. Indeed, the average length of a Best Picture winner is 136 minutes. In terms of cinematic storytelling, that seems to be the sweet spot.
Of course, Roger Ebert's adage needs to be mentioned. The famed critics once posited that no good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough. The actual length of a film doesn't really matter, so long as it's a quality picture, and it makes good use of its time. Personally, I feel...

A24's surreal crime thriller Love Lies Bleeding deals heavily in symbolism while blurring the line between reality and delirium, making its ambiguous final resolution difficult to parse. Kristen Stewart's return to the thriller genre weaves a tangled web of obsession, violence, and family drama using a combination of grimy realism and the dreamlike neon glow of the Southwestern United States in the 1980s. Two young women, Lou (Stewart) and Jackie (Katy O'Brian) fall in love, but their relationship is complicated by a series of violent events that spiral out of control, helped along by Lou's diabolical gun-running father (Ed Harris).
There is what seems to be a fairly pure romance at the heart of Love Lies Bleeding, but as Jackie and Lou's relationship unravels and bodies start piling up, doubt is cast over whether there is anything pure or good about any of the characters involved. Director Rose Glass...

On May 16, 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the first Academy Awards ceremony was held. William A. Wellman's war film "Wings" was declared the year's Outstanding Picture, while Best Unique and Artistic Picture went to F.W. Murnau's masterpiece "Sunrise." There were two Best Director trophies handed out that night, one for drama (to Frank Borzage for "7th Heaven") and another for comedy (Lewis Milestone for "Two Arabian Nights"). There were only two performance awards: Best Actor went to Emil Jannings for "The Last Command," while Janet Gaynor claimed Best Actress for three movies. The ceremony was held without pomp or suspense: it lasted 15 minutes and the winners were known well in advance. The razzle-dazzle was reserved for the afterparty.

Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the finest series in the mecha genre. Not only did it revolutionize mecha, but it highlighted Yoshiyuki Tomino’s brilliance. From war to corruption, the series highlighted the adversities of a dystopian society.
But what truly makes it remarkable is its use of mobile suits and mecha. Mostly, the robots and themes of war are lost in translation. Over the decades, it has garnered a huge fanbase. Mainly because it deviated from the norm, compared to Transformers.

With over 45 years of history, there’s no denying that Gundam is one of the biggest and most influential anime of all time. The imagery and storylines of nearly every installment have become some of the most iconic parts of anime, as have its signature Gunpla model kits, and if a story of any medium decides to reference a mecha anime, odds are it will reference Gundam over anything else.
Few anime franchises can match Gundam’s legacy, but that doesn’t mean there are no anime with similar appeals. Gundam is hardly the only anime to have a good balance of intense action and rich, character-driven drama, and as such, there are countless great anime that do a perfect job of capturing the same sort of appeal that made Gundam such an iconic part of anime. Be it Dune or Arrival, Denis Villeneuve has been very sophisticated when he presents stories about space and aliens. So it makes sense that a film like 2001: A Space Odyssey left a big and lasting impression on the director. An interview during the BAFTA Awards revealed what exactly about the film got to him, and how it has influenced him when it comes to films in general.

Mikey Madison has the potential to make history at the 2025 Oscars in Best Actress with Neon’s “Anora.” At the age of 25, she is receiving universal praise for her portrayal of the title character, a Brooklyn stripper who gets into a whirlwind, impetuous marriage. Sean Baker‘s wild romantic dramedy is continuing to gain massive buzz since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Madison is currently headlined at the top of the combined odds at Gold Derby to win Best Actress. After spending months talking about his long-nurtured dream project, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola embraced the chance to depart from promo tour talking points.
Calling Megaloplis “a great adventure,” Coppola affirmed with a smile in accepting his DGA Honor on Thursday night, “I decided tonight I wouldn’t say anything I’ve been saying.”
After being given the award by his granddaughter, Gia, Coppola said he was delighted to spin yarns about “how the Director’s Guild was founded.” While he didn’t do so in linear fashion, the 85-year-old filmmaker had the audience in the palm of his hand as he recounted giants of cinema and his personal touchstones, paying tribute to masters like Billy Wilder, King Vidor and Samuel Goldwyn.
When he met Jean Renoir, Coppola recalled, the French filmmaker gave him a “beautiful smile” and shook his hand “like he was welcoming me to this profession that he loved so much.

Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the famous Gundam series, has always stuck to his craft. Gundam has been the greatest in the mecha genre of anime, with very few rivals. He is a mastermind in his own right and many fans are grateful to him for creating Gundam. However, despite his long and celebrated career, he has his own doubts about his artistic abilities. Tomino’s decision to remain loyal to Sunrise, the studio where Gundam was created, is due to his insecurity about not being on equal grounds with other artists in the anime industry.

The creator becomes vulnerable about his journey in the anime industry and reveals why he has never left Sunrise, despite being one of its biggest icons. He doesn’t mince his words around his thoughts about the industry and his rivals, particularly about Hayao Miyazaki. He also discusses the philosophical aspects of Gundam.

Francis Ford Coppola has revealed the movie he is most proud of. The answer may surprise some.

Few living filmmakers have a catalogue to rival Coppola: The Godfather films, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation, to name a few of his most acclaimed.
But those weren’t his choice today. The filmmaker was torn, but replied: “That’s like asking someone with 7 kids, who’s the best? I love them all, but if scratched deeper I might say Rumblefish”.

With the feel-good LGBTQ+ series’ third season getting ready to debut on Netflix on October 3, 2024, there’s no time like the present to refresh your memory about who’s who and what they’re up to.

The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.
“The Deauville American Film Festival wanted to highlight a selection of 50 films that have changed the way we look at the world,” it continued.

Skinamarink. In 1873, a penniless Claude Monet visited the opera baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure, hoping to sell a hazy impression of the Seine. He often called on this early patron of the Impressionists with a stack of small paintings under his arm, usually sold at fifty francs apiece, but this time, he brought only one painting, or even less than one, according to Faure.“If I buy your work without haggling for it, I expect it to be painted,” the singer said. “There’s no paint on this one. You must have forgotten it. […] Now, just between you and me, what do you suppose this canvas represents?” “I don’t suppose, I know that it shows the fog rising from the Seine at Vétheuil,” replied Monet.Faure’s demand for finished and legible representation is animated by centuries of Western art history. For thousands of years, painting had been in the chokehold of figuration.
