Romantic rivalries erupt backstage among a traveling company of actors in this Wladyslaw Starewicz animated short.
Unlike the other reviewer, I don't object to Starewicz including Black characters in his movie as examples of what should have been done by Black film makers. The same might be said of the bull dog who appears as a character here, or the insects that populate so many of his movies. Using the same logic, these characters should be cut out, and movies about bulldogs and insects should only be made by bulldogs and insects, not by specist film makers who should only make movies about Slavic emigree animation directors.
No, what I object to here, is the use of animation for a subject that could have been handled by live-action performers. Yes, there are absurd moments aplenty; yes, there are moments of tenderness and so forth. But the same effects largely could have been produced with human performers, and I feel they should have been.
