A brief sequence in the middle of the picture is been said to have sown with color tints. This effect has not survived in existing prints.
Chinese characters in the story are treated with exceptional humanity, given the anti-foreigner sentiments prevalent in the US when the film was made. Released in 1922, Flesh and Blood came just five years after the 1917 Immigration Act that actually prohibited immigration by Asians. Yet, in the film, Chinese characters are shown to have senses of humor and are compassionate, helpful, ingenious and secretive not out of deceit but out of survival in a hostile environment. Community leader Li Fang is praised in an inter title as being respected even by the city's police. The police nonetheless torture him, but he never breaks or betrays his friend Webster.
