Why do we love kaiju movies so much? Is it the sight of an enormous creature stomping its way through a metropolis, tapping into our secret desires to see them leveled? Or the representation of nature’s wrath against humanity for its mistreatment of the planet?...

You didn't have to be a horror aficionado to appreciate the enormity of "Freddy vs. Jason" in 2003. This was two of the titans of the slasher genre finally going head-to-head in a bloody free-for-all. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees had slashed, stabbed, and otherwise punctured our collective pop cultural consciousness for years by then. As a young kid who had yet to see any of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Friday the 13th" films, even I knew exactly what was being referenced the first time I saw the scene in "Christmas Vacation" where Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) dons a hockey mask while taking a chainsaw to his gigantic Christmas tree.
Crossover films of this ilk have largely gone the way of the dodo since "Freddy vs. Jason" came out. We're now 80 years removed from Frankenstein's monster meeting the Wolf Man for the first time in Universal's Og Dark Universe,...

If there's one thing we can take away from modern blockbusters it's that, with rare exceptions, special effects just don't feel "special" anymore.
That's not to say that there aren't beautiful and convincing visual effects being produced in the world of cinema. "Top Gun: Maverick" seamlessly blends real aerial footage with CG recreations, to the extent that it's nearly impossible to tell what was really in front of the camera. "Avatar: The Way of Water," whatever its other flaws may be, is a sumptuous spectacle for the eyes, at once vibrant and colorful and creative.
But what so very many modern visual effects films have in common is that they take imagery that should be astounding for granted, treating the most incredible and impossible things the human mind could devise, and acting like it's just something everyone deals with every day. And the new superhero film "Shazam! Fury of the Gods...

As a string of serious dramas underperform at the box office, silliness has instead taken over Hollywood from M3gan to Cocaine Bear
It wasn’t the big-budget bullishness of Christopher Nolan that lured understandably wary audiences back to the multiplex after Covid struck. The director tried harder than most to be Hollywood’s head cheerleader for the cinema experience, insisting his sleek thriller Tenet be seen on the big screen and the big screen only back in the cursed days of 2020, but it was too much and too soon, and ultimately his film was too bad for it to work too well.
The film was by no means a flop, but it was a concerning under-performer, caveats and all, and it wasn’t until the following March that we found out what it took to truly lead the masses from their couch. Rather than style or sophistication, as Nolan had offered,...

Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) screenwriter Jimmy Warden has said that he has ideas for multiple sequels to the film, and some movie-goers have already let it be known that they’re hoping and waiting for a movie that would be called Cocaine Shark. But while we wait to see if Cocaine Bear is going to spawn a franchise, the mockbuster masters at The Asylum have unveiled a poster of the mockbuster they have made to cash in on the Cocaine Bear hype: a movie called Attack of the Meth Gator! An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect to see Attack of the Meth Gator sometime this summer.
We can only assume that Attack of the Meth Gator is going to be about an alligator going on a killing spree after consuming meth, much like Cocaine Bear is about a bear going on a killing spree after consuming cocaine.

Kong could end up with minions of his own in Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Presently, there isn't a single Titan in Legendary's MonsterVerse who answers to Kong. Godzilla, on the other hand, acquired a handful of henchmen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters' ending.
Having defeated Ghidorah, Godzilla has earned the right to be called the King of the Monsters, as well as the privilege of leading the other Titans in the MonsterVerse. Kong had an opportunity to take the crown for himself in Godzilla vs. Kong, but was unable to obtain victory when it mattered. Had he won, it's possible that the loyalty of Godzilla's minions would have shifted to him. But even though that didn't happen, Kong can still gian allies, similar to the ones Godzilla currently has. Here's how Kong can muster up some Titan followers when his MonsterVerse story continues in Godzilla vs. Kong 2.

Godzilla feature films can be separated into six separate, distinct continuities. From Toho's 1954 original "Gojira" until "Terror of Mechagodzilla" in 1975, there were 16 films in the "Showa" era. Beginning in 1984 with "The Return of Godzilla" and running until "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995, was the "Heisei" era. Roland Emmerich's 1998 American film was, after the fact, folded into a new rebooted continuity which began in 2000 with "Godzilla 2000." That was the "Millennium" era. That era ran until 2004 and closed out with "Godzilla: Final Wars," a film where Godzilla fights just about every monster imaginable. In 2014, America took a crack at kaiju films again with a new "Godzilla," now part of a multi-film "MonsterVerse" era. Perhaps in response, Japan made "Shin Godzilla" in 2016, the only film to date in the "Shin" era. Shortly after "Shin Godzilla," there was also a trilogy of animated films on Netflix. Call those films the "Netflix" era.

Rodan has the potential to appear in two separate MonsterVerse installments. Thus far, the King of the Skies' presence in the MonsterVerse hasn't gone beyond Godzilla: King of the Monsters. However, there's no reason why he can't come back for another live-action appearance.
As things stand, Legendary has three MonsterVerse projects in the works. In 2024, Legendary will release an untitled sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which will bring Adam Wingard back on board as director. Each of the movie's two titular Titans will also be featured in their own TV shows as well. Kong will lead a Skull Island anime on Netflix, whereas Godzilla has a live-action MonsterVerse show on the horizon, which will be set after the battle of San Francisco in 2014's Godzilla movie. Here's why Rodan has an opportunity to be in two of the three confirmed projects.

Developed by Luffy during his training on Rusukaina, Gear 4 is one of the Straw Hat protagonist's most powerful transformations in One Piece Odyssey that players can use to deal massive amounts of damage on enemy targets. Fans of the anime or manga will likely recall that Luffy used his Gear 4 form when battling against Donquixote Doflamingo, the captain of the Donquixote Pirates. The attacks used in this form are exceptionally potent and capable of defeating the strongest of enemies. Accordingly, many fans progressing through the story of One Piece Odyssey are likely curious if Gear 4 is available for Luffy to use.
One Piece Odyssey will feature Luffy using Gear 4 during Chapter Eight: Kingdom in Conflict: Battle of Dressrosa. Therefore, players must clear Chapters One through Seven to reach the point in the story during which Luffy and his Straw Hat crew face off against Donflamingo.

In 2005, Hollywood did the unthinkable—it launched a remake of the 1933 cinematic masterpiece, King Kong. This was not the first attempt to do so, although if anything the previous attempts were cautionary tales about why you should never attempt to remake King Kong.
The first, in 1976, replaced the original’s groundbreaking stop-motion effects with a guy in a gorilla suit and a hugely expensive, life-sized mechanical gorilla that provided a total of 15 seconds of usable footage. The second was an attempt in the late ‘90s to remake the film with an up-and-coming indie horror director better known for what the press at the time called “video nasties” than big, family-friendly blockbusters. However, with a Godzilla remake in the works, alongside the rival big gorilla movie remake of Mighty Joe Young, the project was canned and the director moved on to adapt a series of fantasy novels.

Mille Bobby Brown squares up to fight a fire-breathing dragon in new footage from her upcoming Netflix fantasy, Damsel. Rising to fame with her role as Eleven in Stranger Things, Brown has since starred in a number of other high-profile films, including Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 in 2020 and 2022, respectively. The Enola Holmes films are part of a larger collaboration between Brown and Netflix, with both films also featuring the young actor as a producer. Outside of her Netflix productions, Brown also recently appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong.
Now, a new trailer released by Netflix showing off their most anticipated 2023 original movies sees Brown's Princess Elodie preparing to fight a dragon in Damsel.

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves now definitively confirms the origin of the movie's giant monster. Released in 2008, Cloverfield serves as the breakout hit for Reeves, who would go on to direct two installments in the successful Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and last year's The Batman. The movie tells the story of a group of New Yorkers who attempt to stay alive after the arrival of a giant, destructive monster plunges the city into chaos. Cloverfield's success spawned two anthology sequels, including the generally well-received 10 Cloverfield Lane and the less well-received The Cloverfield Paradox, neither of which Reeves directed.
Although hinted at across the films, Reeves confirms the origin of the Cloverfield monster in a recent interview with Syfy. The director shares that they had a very clear understanding from the jump of not only where the monster comes from but why he behaves the way he does. It turns out,...

The Critics Choice Awards took place on Sunday night (15 January) at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by Chelsea Handler and broadcast on US network The CW.
Rogen, 40, presented the award for Best Comedy Series, which went to Abbott Elementary.
Noting that the Best Supporting Actor/Actress award had been combined, the Knocked Up star joked: “That was weird. Why do they do that? Are we crunched for time? Get another hour! It can’t be that expensive.
“You know how I know that? This show airs at 4pm on The CW. That cannot be a pricey timeslot, from my understanding of how this all works.”
Continuing to mock the award’s host network, Rogen said: “I’m not saying The CW is bad.

The culmination of the first wave of MonsterVerse films, "Godzilla vs. Kong" delivered on the title's premise and then some. In addition to having Godzilla slap Kong around (and vice-versa), the film expanded the kaiju-filled world by introducing the Hollow Earth. Indeed, the center of our planet was revealed to be a lush environment that literally flipped the world on its head, laying out an expansive origin story for Kong and his fiercest competitor along the way. Just don't compare it to Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
A sequel is well on its way, but "Godzilla vs. Kong" already did the heavy lifting when it comes to laying the foundation of its monster-ridden universe. The Hollow Earth once housed the large creatures that now terrorize the surface land, including Kong's deceased relatives. The giant ape's return to his homeland is a turning point in the story,...

Hong Kong’s box office managed to stage a partial recovery in the second half of 2022, despite cinemas being closed for nearly four months earlier in the year, due to US titles including Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way Of Water and a strong line-up of local movies.
Total box office for 2022 came in at HK1.14bn (US146.41m), according to figures from Hong Kong Box Office Limited, which was only 5 down on 2021. However, these figures were more than 40 down on the 2019 pre-pandemic box office tally of HK1.92bn (US246.17), prompting Hong Kong Box Office to state that “the situation of the film industry is still very severe”.
Hong Kong cinemas were closed from January 7 to April 20 in 2022, wiping out the lucrative Chinese New Year and Easter periods, compared to a shutdown of 48 days in 2021. When cinemas finally reopened last year, they were subject to a 50 seating capacity for one month,...

A succession of locally-made hit films released in the second half of the year helped the cinema box office in Hong Kong to stage a remarkable comeback in 2022.
Aggregate box office for the year was HK1.14 billion (147 million), some 40 lower than pre-pandemic 2019, according to new data from Hong Kong Box Office Limited. In its annual assessment, the organization echoed its earlier alarm and described the situation in 2022 as “very severe.”
The full year total was only 5 lower than in 2021 and was achieved despite cinemas being closed for 104 days on government orders in 2022, following local authorities’ attempt to limit the spread of Covid.
Closures meant that Hong Kong cinemas were dark during the 2022 Chinese New Year and Easter peak periods.

Thanks to the influx of films seen throughout it that were driven by naturalistic performances and classical techniques mixed with subversive ideas, the 1970s are generally thought of as one of the greatest decades for movies.
The emergence of directors like Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, and George Lucas reinvented Hollywood filmmaking, but Europe and Asia were also innovating and creating some of the best genre movies of the decade. With franchises like Godzilla, Star Wars, and Alien all still going today, the best sci-fi movies of the 1970s are actually sometimes still essential to understanding some of the most recent blockbusters.

The "alpha Titan" term has never been clearly defined in Legendary's MonsterVerse, but events in Godzilla's movies can provide an understanding of the concept. Thus far, the hierarchy of the Titans has been presented as a crucial part of the MonsterVerse mythos. In Godzilla's MonsterVerse movies, the monster who gets the most respect is the alpha of the Titans, but apparently, that word can be attributed to more than one creature.
Interest in being the alpha has been the driving force before behind two of the MonsterVerse's four movies. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, having this title had a lot to do with what made Ghidorah so threatening. Not only was he terraforming the planet, but his position as the alpha was allowing him to lord over several other Titans in the MonsterVerse at once. While it seemed that Rodan and Ghidorah's battle for supremacy was the first time they’ve encountered each other in the MonsterVerse, a hidden detail in the film suggests otherwise. During the scene set in Godzilla’s underwater city, a painting on one of the walls hinted at a battle that involved all four of the movie’s principal Titans. On one side of the mural was Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra, with Ghidorah on the other. The implication of this image was that the residents of Godzilla’s original home bore witness to a fight where Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan teamed up against Monster Zero.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Release Date: 2023-06-09
The Transformers franchise's seventh film is titled Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, drawing inspiration from the animated series Beast Wars: Transformers — here's why Beast Wars movie took so long. For fans of the Michael Bay Transformers movies wondering what Beast Wars is and why it's caused such a hype, Transformers 7 will introduce mainstream audiences to new factions of Transformers, including Terrorcons and Maximals, who are animal Transformers. Rise of the Beasts will take place seven years after the events of Bumblebee, allowing Paramount to reinvent the Transformers franchise without rebooting the cinematic universe. Moreover, the decision to pull from the classic animated series Beast Wars indicates the filmmakers are looking to bring something new to the franchise.
Franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said as much during Paramount’s showcase when he admitted they'd exhausted the rivalry between the Autobots and Decepticons.

Brian Tyree Henry may be best known for his role as Paper Boi in the recently concluded Atlanta, but he's recently earned a lot of acclaim on the film festival circuit for his role in Causeway opposite Jennifer Lawrence. Though the movie was filmed for Apple in 2019, it just started making the rounds in late 2022. Outside of Causeway, most of Henry's best-known projects have only been released since 2018, including his voice work in the animated series Big Mouth and HouseBroken, currently airing.
Many of Henry's movies are certified “fresh” through review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Henry’s best critically reviewed movies all land at over 60 on the site, and there will surely be more highly rated projects from him in the future as he will be reprising his roles in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and Godzilla and Kong.

A number of iconic monsters from Nintendo’s video games are already confirmed to appear in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. The titular protagonist will be up against a slew of his most famous enemies when the movie’s story kicks off.
Details on the Super Mario Bros. Movie promise the inclusion of multiple Nintendo characters. Based on what’s been revealed, quite a few will be in a position to help Mario. In addition to Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad, Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, and the Yoshis will all be involved in Mario’s battle with Bowser. There’s also the penguins, who appear to share a common enemy with Mario. As for the villains, their side certainly won’t be lacking for allies either. Numerous...

Over the course of 144 minutes, Philip Yung’s true-crime drama Where the Wind Blows covers an awful lot of ground. An epic in the style Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in New York, it pairs Asian superstars Tony Leung and Aaron Kwok in a story spanning several decades of police corruption in Hong Kong during its time as a British colony. The detail is sometimes dense, but the tone turns playful and refreshingly light at times, and there’s even a memorable musical routine for “The God of Dance” Kwok.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders International award-season event Saturday, Yung explained his reasons for wanting to make the film. “Hong Kong ended its colonial era in 1997, so it’s been 25 years,” he said. “Many changes have happened since then, and many people who lived during that time have gotten old or passed away. I wanted to leave behind...

Godzilla vs. Kong 2 can pay off Godzilla: King of the Monsters by finding room for Godzilla’s minions. At the end of Godzilla’s second MonsterVerse movie, the iconic kaiju secured his position as the alpha of the Titans by beating Ghidorah. And in doing so, he acquired at least a handful of his own Titan underlings.
King of the Monsters set up Rodan, Methuselah, Behemoth, Scylla, and the third Muto to serve as allies of Godzilla in the MonsterVerse’s future, but all five were missing from Godzilla vs. Kong’s story. By choosing not to use them, the crossover film failed to give proper meaning to King of the Monsters’ ending. Beating Ghidorah made Godzilla the alpha, but that title doesn’t hold any significance if he doesn’t have monsters to command. For the ending to truly matter, the MonsterVerse needs Titans who can follow Godzilla...

A number of important details could be easily missed in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer. A full trailer for Nintendo’s upcoming Mario movie reveals a great deal about what’s in store for the video game icon when he takes on Bowser. In addition to teasing the plot, the trailer unveiled designs for a few of the movie’s confirmed characters, including Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong.
As expected, Super Mario Bros. Movie is promising a long list of callbacks to classic Mario video games. Arguably the biggest and most welcome surprise in the trailer was the movie’s core cast of characters racing down Rainbow Road. The obvious Mario Kart tribute in the trailer serves as a glimpse into how deep the movie will go with its references. But not all of its Easter eggs and big moments are being held back for the theatrical release.

Guillermo del Toro spent decades dreaming up his stop-motion version of “Pinocchio.” Now that he’s finally made his animated debut, he has no plans to slow down. Unlike many auteur passion projects given the greenlight by Netflix, this one could open the floodgates for a director keen on making up for lost time.
Over 30 years ago, del Toro was a young makeup and special effects artist in Guadalajara, Mexico, preparing to direct his first feature. The project was a wild, stop-motion animated sci-fi story called “Omnivore,” and the premise read like a rough audition for the revisionist genre epics he would make years later. He was inspired by Mexican stop-motion sculptor Marcel Delgado, whose credits include “King Kong,” to make a very different kind of monster movie.
“It was a very late teens, early 20s, underground comix type of story,” the 58-year-old filmmaker recalled in a recent interview with IndieWire.

Nintendo and Universal Pictures has finally delivered the big trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and this time it’s more than just two scenes and a stinger. We finally have something else to talk about besides Chris Pratt’s questionable Mario voice acting!
Now we get to see Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, some kart-driving action, and Luigi doing more than just screaming for his life. We definitely have a better look at what this movie has to offer and with this broader scope comes plenty of easter Eggs.
Mario has been in so many games, and crossed so many genres, that there’s plenty of source material for Illumination to pull from. Even through there are still a few big names from Mario lore that are likely being saved for the sequel, The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to all the background details and cameos.

New trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie introduces Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart & more
Lets-a-go! Nintendo has released a new trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie which offers us much more of Chris Pratt’s Mario than the first one. The new trailer also introduces us to Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and more, and there are also plenty of references to many of the Super Mario video-games, including Mario Kart. All in all, it looks like a lot of fun.
The Super Mario Bros Movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Micahel Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Aaron Horvath and Micahel Jelenic directed the movie from a script by Matthew Fogel.
Related John Leguizamo based his The Menu character on Steven Seagal
The project hasn’t exactly been free of controversy.

Designs were created for three additional Titans in 2014’s Godzilla movie. The male and female MUTOs proved to be powerful adversaries for Godzilla, but there were other candidates for his rivals in the movie. Godzilla could have fought monsters that differ greatly from the two chosen for the movie.
Legendary’s MonsterVerse is populated with dozens of Titans, many of which being creatures who have remained hidden for millennia deep underground or in the hidden Hollow Earth world. Godzilla served as the building blocks for all the lore in the MonsterVerse by introducing a new interpretation of Godzilla and the two Mutos. Interestingly, audiences’ introduction to Godzilla’s world nearly happened quite differently. Unused artwork associated with the movie confirms plans for Titans knowns as Pterodactyl, Vishnu, and Rokmutul. But of course, none of them have actually appeared in the MonsterVerse. Here's everything known about the three scrapped Titans.

A Godzilla: King of the Monsters Easter egg reveals how Anguirus could work if he were to appear in Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Anguirus, the ankylosaurus-like kaiju who famously teamed up with Godzilla in a few of Toho’s movies, has yet to appear in the MonsterVerse. However, he’s one of several Toho monsters with a reasonable chance of appearing in Godzilla vs. Kong 2.
Interestingly, the Anguirus Easter egg cleverly included in King of the Monsters demonstrates how he’d be adapted to the MonsterVerse. When the underwater city was destroyed by the nuclear blast, the skeleton of a creature that could easily be identified as Anguirus was briefly spotted amongst the ruins of the city. This indicates that Anguirus was a Hollow Earth Titan and potentially a resident of Godzilla's home. This provides a framework for Anguirus’ MonsterVerse debut, as it's not outside the realm of possibility that...

Pixar's movies are often littered with crossover references, but one Easter egg's story that isn't as well-known is the appearance of Toy Story's Rex in Monsters Inc. Whenever Toy Story's Andy played with his toys on-screen Rex the dinosaur was always the terrifying monster that needed to be taken down by the good guys, Woody and Buzz. Yet when Rex came to life, he was known for being friendly, nervous, and clumsy; in other words, nothing like the kaiju-like beast that Andy thought he was.
Monsters Inc. played with Rex's ironic personality by temporarily casting him in the role of Ted the monster in one of Monsters Inc.'s "outtakes." As Mike and Sulley made their way to work early on in Monsters Inc., they found themselves standing by the giant scaly leg of Ted at a pedestrian crossing, and Sulley shouted a greeting at him. Even at this point in the MonsterVerse’s timeline, Godzilla still hasn’t used his strongest power. The Japanese pop culture’s signature weapon will always be his atomic breath, but it’s not the only tool in his arsenal. Over the years, Godzilla has exhibited multiple abilities in Toho’s movies.
Without question, Godzilla’s greatest power in Toho’s franchise is the spiral heat ray, a beam attack that trumps even the atomic breath. In the Heisei era, it has both blue and red forms, with the latter being the more potent version of the blast. What distinguishes it from the atomic breath is the lightning bolt-shaped spiral that circles the blast. With its unrivaled power, Godzilla was able to destroy one of Ghidorah’s heads, leave Destoroyah vulnerable for the finishing blow, kill SpaceGodzilla, and crippled Mechagodzilla. The Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy succeeded where much similar sci-fi failed, and a lot of it has to do with how the film treated its human characters compared to Caesar. Far more character-focused than the previous Planet of the Apes movies, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) rebooted the franchise and told a simple yet moving origin story through the eyes of Andy Serkis’ Caesar. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) followed a similar approach, and all three films avoid a common blockbuster problem.
There is no shortage of examples of sci-fi movies like the Planet of the Apes series that were supposed to have fantastical creatures as the main characters, but chose to focus on humans instead. Wario and Waluigi are two of the most popular Nintendo video game characters, but it looks like they will be missing in The Super Mario Bros. Movie - and that's a good thing. Best friends Wario and Waluigi have been stalwarts of the Mario games series for some time, with Wario first appearing in 1992's Super Mario Land 2, and Waluigi debuting as Wario's doubles partner in 2000's Mario Tennis. Despite the pair being Mario and Luigi’s arch-rivals, the dastardly duo are among Nintendo's most loved characters, particularly Waluigi who has an internet cult following.

V/H/S 99 is the latest of those sequels to arrive from Shudder, with another expected to arrive next year.
