You didn't have to be a horror aficionado to appreciate the enormity of "Freddy vs. Jason" in 2003. This was two of the titans of the slasher genre finally going head-to-head in a bloody free-for-all. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees had slashed, stabbed, and otherwise punctured our collective pop cultural consciousness for years by then. As a young kid who had yet to see any of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Friday the 13th" films, even I knew exactly what was being referenced the first time I saw the scene in "Christmas Vacation" where Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) dons a hockey mask while taking a chainsaw to his gigantic Christmas tree.

"Top Gun: Maverick" seamlessly blends real aerial footage with CG recreations, to the extent that it's nearly impossible to tell what was really in front of the camera. "Avatar: The Way of Water," whatever its other flaws may be, is a sumptuous spectacle for the eyes, at once vibrant and colorful and creative.

But what so very many modern visual effects films have in common is that they take imagery that should be astounding for granted, treating the most incredible and impossible things the human mind could devise, and acting like it's just something everyone deals with every day. And the new superhero film "Shazam! The director tried harder than most to be Hollywood’s head cheerleader for the cinema experience, insisting his sleek thriller Tenet be seen on the big screen and the big screen only back in the cursed days of 2020, but it was too much and too soon, and ultimately his film was too bad for it to work too well.

Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) screenwriter Jimmy Warden has said that he has ideas for multiple sequels to the film, and some movie-goers have already let it be known that they’re hoping and waiting for a movie that would be called Cocaine Shark. But while we wait to see if Cocaine Bear is going to spawn a franchise, the mockbuster masters at The Asylum have unveiled a poster of the mockbuster they have made to cash in on the Cocaine Bear hype: a movie called Attack of the Meth Gator! An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect to see Attack of the Meth Gator sometime this summer.

We can only assume that Attack of the Meth Gator is going to be about an alligator going on a killing spree after consuming meth, much like Cocaine Bear is about a bear going on a killing spree after consuming cocaine.

Kong could end up with minions of his own in Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Presently, there isn't a single Titan in Legendary's MonsterVerse who answers to Kong. Godzilla, on the other hand, acquired a handful of henchmen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters' ending.

Having defeated Ghidorah, Godzilla has earned the right to be called the King of the Monsters, as well as the privilege of leading the other Titans in the MonsterVerse. Kong had an opportunity to take the crown for himself in Godzilla vs. Kong, but was unable to obtain victory when it mattered. Had he won, it's possible that the loyalty of Godzilla's minions would have shifted to him. But even though that didn't happen, Kong can still gian allies, similar to the ones Godzilla currently has. Godzilla feature films can be separated into six separate, distinct continuities. From Toho's 1954 original "Gojira" until "Terror of Mechagodzilla" in 1975, there were 16 films in the "Showa" era. Beginning in 1984 with "The Return of Godzilla" and running until "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995, was the "Heisei" era. Roland Emmerich's 1998 American film was, after the fact, folded into a new rebooted continuity which began in 2000 with "Godzilla 2000." That was the "Millennium" era. A solid rumor indicates that the next MonsterVerse of Godzilla & Kong will be shot on IMAX Msm 70mm film cameras with Panavised Canon 1200 lenses. That would be the first MonsterVerse film to be shot in the 15/70 format.

Stranger Things officially holds the record as the most-streamed show of 2022, according to new data. First released on Netflix in 2016, the Duffer Brothers' fantasy/ horror show would go on to become one of the streamer's most popular offerings. As things stand, Legendary has three MonsterVerse projects in the works. In 2024, Legendary will release an untitled sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which will bring Adam Wingard back on board as director. Each of the movie's two titular Titans will also be featured in their own TV shows as well. Kong will lead a Skull Island anime on Netflix, whereas Godzilla has a live-action MonsterVerse show on the horizon, which will be set after the battle of San Francisco in 2014's Godzilla movie. In 2005, Hollywood did the unthinkable—it launched a remake of the 1933 cinematic masterpiece, King Kong. This was not the first attempt to do so, although if anything the previous attempts were cautionary tales about why you should never attempt to remake King Kong.

The first, in 1976, replaced the original’s groundbreaking stop-motion effects with a guy in a gorilla suit and a hugely expensive, life-sized mechanical gorilla that provided a total of 15 seconds of usable footage. The second was an attempt in the late ‘90s to remake the film with an up-and-coming indie horror director better known for what the press at the time called “video nasties” than big, family-friendly blockbusters. However, with a Godzilla remake in the works, alongside the rival big gorilla movie remake of Mighty Joe Young, the project was canned and the director moved on to adapt a series of fantasy novels.

Mille Bobby Brown squares up to fight a fire-breathing dragon in new footage from her upcoming Netflix fantasy, Damsel. Cloverfield director Matt Reeves now definitively confirms the origin of the movie's giant monster. Released in 2008, Cloverfield serves as the breakout hit for Reeves, who would go on to direct two installments in the successful Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and last year's The Batman. The movie tells the story of a group of New Yorkers who attempt to stay alive after the arrival of a giant, destructive monster plunges the city into chaos. Cloverfield's success spawned two anthology sequels, including the generally well-received 10 Cloverfield Lane and the less well-received The Cloverfield Paradox, neither of which Reeves directed.

The Critics Choice Awards took place on Sunday night (15 January) at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by Chelsea Handler and broadcast on US network The CW.

Rogen, 40, presented the award for Best Comedy Series, which went to Abbott Elementary.

Noting that the Best Supporting Actor/Actress award had been combined, the Knocked Up star joked: “That was weird. Why do they do that? Are we crunched for time? Get another hour! It can’t be that expensive.

“You know how I know that? This show airs at 4pm on The CW. That cannot be a pricey timeslot, from my understanding of how this all works.”

Continuing to mock the award’s host network, Rogen said: “I’m not saying The CW is bad.

Hong Kong’s box office managed to stage a partial recovery in the second half of 2022, despite cinemas being closed for nearly four months earlier in the year, due to US titles including Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way Of Water and a strong line-up of local movies.

Total box office for 2022 came in at HK1.14bn (US146.41m), according to figures from Hong Kong Box Office Limited, which was only 5 down on 2021. However, these figures were more than 40 down on the 2019 pre-pandemic box office tally of HK1.92bn (US246.17), prompting Hong Kong Box Office to state that “the situation of the film industry is still very severe”.

A succession of locally-made hit films released in the second half of the year helped the cinema box office in Hong Kong to stage a remarkable comeback in 2022.

Aggregate box office for the year was HK1.14 billion (147 million), some 40 lower than pre-pandemic 2019, according to new data from Hong Kong Box Office Limited. In its annual assessment, the organization echoed its earlier alarm and described the situation in 2022 as “very severe.”

The full year total was only 5 lower than in 2021 and was achieved despite cinemas being closed for 104 days on government orders in 2022, following local authorities’ attempt to limit the spread of Covid.

Closures meant that Hong Kong cinemas were dark during the 2022 Chinese New Year and Easter peak periods.

And even after cinemas were allowed to reopen in late April 2022, the government continued to intervene in the sector, maintaining seating limits on cinemas for almost all of the year. Theaters...

The "alpha Titan" term has never been clearly defined in Legendary's MonsterVerse, but events in Godzilla's movies can provide an understanding of the concept. Thus far, the hierarchy of the Titans has been presented as a crucial part of the MonsterVerse mythos. In Godzilla's MonsterVerse movies, the monster who gets the most respect is the alpha of the Titans, but apparently, that word can be attributed to more than one creature.

Interest in being the alpha has been the driving force before behind two of the MonsterVerse's four movies. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, having this title had a lot to do with what made Ghidorah so threatening. Not only was he terraforming the planet, but his position as the alpha was allowing him to lord over several other Titans in the MonsterVerse at once. During the scene set in Godzilla’s underwater city, a painting on one of the walls hinted at a battle that involved all four of the movie’s principal Titans. On one side of the mural was Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra, with Ghidorah on the other. The implication of this image was that the residents of Godzilla’s original home bore witness to a fight where Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan teamed up against Monster Zero.

Brian Tyree Henry may be best known for his role as Paper Boi in the recently concluded Atlanta, but he's recently earned a lot of acclaim on the film festival circuit for his role in Causeway opposite Jennifer Lawrence. Though the movie was filmed for Apple in 2019, it just started making the rounds in late 2022. Outside of Causeway, most of Henry's best-known projects have only been released since 2018, including his voice work in the animated series Big Mouth and HouseBroken, currently airing.

Many of Henry's movies are certified “fresh” through review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Henry’s best critically reviewed movies all land at over 60 on the site, and there will surely be more highly rated projects from him in the future as he will be reprising his roles in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and Godzilla and Kong.

Over the course of 144 minutes, Philip Yung’s true-crime drama Where the Wind Blows covers an awful lot of ground. An epic in the style Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in New York, it pairs Asian superstars Tony Leung and Aaron Kwok in a story spanning several decades of police corruption in Hong Kong during its time as a British colony. The detail is sometimes dense, but the tone turns playful and refreshingly light at times, and there’s even a memorable musical routine for “The God of Dance” Kwok.

A full trailer for Nintendo’s upcoming Mario movie reveals a great deal about what’s in store for the video game icon when he takes on Bowser. As expected, Super Mario Bros. Movie is promising a long list of callbacks to classic Mario video games. Arguably the biggest and most welcome surprise in the trailer was the movie’s core cast of characters racing down Rainbow Road. The obvious Mario Kart tribute in the trailer serves as a glimpse into how deep the movie will go with its references. But not all of its Easter eggs and big moments are being held back for the theatrical release.

Guillermo del Toro spent decades dreaming up his stop-motion version of “Pinocchio.” Now that he’s finally made his animated debut, he has no plans to slow down. Unlike many auteur passion projects given the greenlight by Netflix, this one could open the floodgates for a director keen on making up for lost time.

Over 30 years ago, del Toro was a young makeup and special effects artist in Guadalajara, Mexico, preparing to direct his first feature. The project was a wild, stop-motion animated sci-fi story called “Omnivore,” and the premise read like a rough audition for the revisionist genre epics he would make years later. He was inspired by Mexican stop-motion sculptor Marcel Delgado, whose credits include “King Kong,” to make a very different kind of monster movie.

“It was a very late teens, early 20s, underground comix type of story,” the 58-year-old filmmaker recalled in a recent interview with IndieWire.

Nintendo and Universal Pictures has finally delivered the big trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and this time it’s more than just two scenes and a stinger. We finally have something else to talk about besides Chris Pratt’s questionable Mario voice acting!

Now we get to see Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, some kart-driving action, and Luigi doing more than just screaming for his life. We definitely have a better look at what this movie has to offer and with this broader scope comes plenty of easter Eggs.

Mario has been in so many games, and crossed so many genres, that there’s plenty of source material for Illumination to pull from. Even through there are still a few big names from Mario lore that are likely being saved for the sequel, The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to all the background details and cameos.

Lets-a-go! Nintendo has released a new trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie which offers us much more of Chris Pratt’s Mario than the first one. The new trailer also introduces us to Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and more, and there are also plenty of references to many of the Super Mario video-games, including Mario Kart. All in all, it looks like a lot of fun.

The Super Mario Bros Movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Micahel Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Aaron Horvath and Micahel Jelenic directed the movie from a script by Matthew Fogel.

Actor Rebecca Hall teases a story detail of the highly anticipated kaiju team-up sequel, Godzilla Vs. Kong 2. The actor first joined Legendary Films' Godzilla franchise in Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021) as Dr. Ilene Andrews, an anthropological linguist with the government agency Monarch. The male and female MUTOs proved to be powerful adversaries for Godzilla, but there were other candidates for his rivals in the movie. New merchandise for Godzilla vs. Kong 2 reveals the film's title and further details about the forthcoming monster movie. Purin Pictures, a non-profit Asian film financier, is to give grants to two Burmese, two Cambodian, two Thai, and one Indonesian project in its latest funding round. “We are excited to support multiple projects from Myanmar and Cambodia, two countries that have less developed film industries than their Southeast Asian neighbors,” said Purin Pictures co-director Anocha Suwichakornpong. A new animated adventure from the co-director of "Big Hero 6" and "Moana" is set to arrive on Netflix this July in the form of "The Sea Beast."
