Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey were originally scheduled to star in a college spoof entitled "Frat Heads", but with the success of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's The Devil's Brother (1933) and Roman Scandals (1933) with Eddie Cantor, RKO decided to make a costume period piece. All that remains of "Frat Heads" are a few publicity stills.
This film's earliest documented telecast took place in Altoona PA Wednesday 29 August 1956 on WFBG (Channel 10); it soon became a surprise local favorite from coast to coast as it first aired in Los Angeles Wednesday 12 September 1956 on KHJ (Channel 9), in New York City Sunday 23 September 1956 on WOR (Channel 9), in Fort Worth Tuesday 25 September 1956 on WBAP (Channel 5), in Philadelphia Friday 28 September 1956 on WFIL (Channel 6), in WIlkes-Barre Wednesday 17 October 1956 on WILK (Channel 34), in Memphis Thursday 8 November 1956 on WHBQ (Channel 13), in San Francisco Friday 9 November 1956 on KPIX (Channel 5), in Tacoma WA Monday 17 December 1956 on KTVW (Channel 13), and in Pittsburgh Thursday 3 January 1957 on KDKA (Channel 2).
