The older I get the more I appreciate and connect with Werewolf of London. It is a movie that does not follow the established rules of werewolf movies because it was created in a time before those rules were written. Many, if not most, of the most notable and enduring films of the subgenre deal in externalizing the internal struggles of the young using the metaphor of the beast within. Most of these characters are breaking away from their parents and childhoods, seeking to make their own way in the world.
Though Larry Talbot in The Wolf Man (1941) appears in the mature body of Lon Chaney, Jr., he is in many ways an angsty teenager tormented by the conflicting feelings of simultaneously falling in love for the first time while part of himself that he cannot control wishes to ravage her and tear her to shreds in the process. About a year and a half ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, and her brother Jake Gyllenhaal, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Magaro is currently doing press for the film September 5, where he shares the screen with Sarsgaard, and he told The Hollywood Reporter that The Bride! is wild, fun, and bonkers – and also compared it to some classic films.

September 5 star John Magaro knows he’s had a charmed run the last five years, but his Cleveland-area upbringing won’t let him get too comfortable.
Ever since his Carol director, Todd Haynes, endorsed his casting to First Cow filmmaker Kelly Reichardt in 2018, Magaro has been working like there’s no tomorrow. You can currently find him on the big screen in Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, as well as on the small screen in the George Clooney-produced series, The Agency. He also has two films on the festival circuit this year before he’s set to appear in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! this fall. If that wasn’t enough, he just wrapped The Mastermind, his third movie with Reichardt in the last handful of years.
Magaro’s work ethic is a byproduct of growing up in Northeast Ohio, a region that’s “used to disappointment,” as he once put it.

As the creator of Hellboy and artist of the half-demon hero's many adventures into darkness, Mike Mignola is comics' foremost expert on monsters. Hellboy is an agent of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) and has vanquished every type of monster under the full moon, from vampires to werewolves to dragons to his demonic kin. "Hellboy" comics range from simple short stories to pulp epics as good as any blockbuster movie; you don't get the modern reinvention of "Creature Commandos" without the B.P.R.D.
But what is Mignola's own favorite monster movie? Despite also being the creator of Hellboy's amphibian sidekick Abe Sapien, it's not "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" and its underwater horror Gill-man.

The Bride! is the latest attempt to resurrect the Classic Monsters once again, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the Bride of Frankenstein remake. The original Bride of Frankenstein movie was released in 1935. It sees Dr. Frankenstein being forced to return to his monstrous experiments, and this time, he creates a bride for his first creation. The Frankenstein's Bride character is just as well-known as Frankenstein's Monster, with her makeup and hairstyle making her an LGBTQ+ icon, so it's unsurprising that Universal has tried hard to remake the film.
The closest the studio came to making the remake was with the Universal Dark Universe, a cinematic universe planned to include several iconic monsters such as Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, and many others. The Bride of Frankenstein was one of them, and a remake within the Dark Universe had entered early conceptual development. However, after the...

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will helm a new Mummy film slated for release in 2026, here are the details.
The Mummy was, of course, part of the stable of classic movie monsters at Universal in the 1930s, which also included Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolfman. Incidentally Gods And Monsters, the biopic of Frankenstein director James Whale starring Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and is well worth watching.
Fraser headlined the 1990s/early 2000s trilogy of Mummy films, alongside Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo and, in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson, who went on to star in spin-off The Scorpion King, which also lived on through a plethora of straight to DVD sequels. There were plans for a fourth Fraser Mummy film but, for various reasons, it never happened – we wrote about it here.

Blumhouse is continuing its quest to revive classic movie monsters for modern audiences. To that end, it has been revealed that Lee Cronin, of "Evil Dead Rise" fame, is set to write and direct a new take on "The Mummy," with Blumhouse producing the film for New Line Cinema.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin's "The Mummy" will hit theaters on April 17, 2026. Mark that on your calendars and plan accordingly, horror fans. The announcement was teased by Blumhouse on Instagram (which you can check out below), revealing the title page for the filmmaker's script. "Something terrifying will be unleashed in 2026," the caption reads. In a brief statement, Cronin had this to say about it:
"This will be unlike any 'Mummy' movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I'm digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,"

Despite some excellent movies hitting theaters, 2024 was, to use a sports phrase, a rebuilding year. The 2023 Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes ground Hollywood to a halt before the studios ultimately agreed to some much-needed concessions for the folks who physically make the films and TV shows we all love, and the downstream effects of that unnecessarily drawn-out labor stoppage spilled into 2024. Movies and shows that were supposed to come out needed time to restart production, studios delayed some releases into 2025, and the industry as a whole experienced a contraction. The first half of this year was rough at the box office, but thanks to several major wins near the end of the year, theatrical exhibition managed to stay alive and make up a ton of ground.
While we'll likely be seeing the effects of the strikes and the subsequent contraction for a while, the floodgates are preparing to open for...

If you’ve been following DC’s ups and downs, you know the franchise hasn’t always had the smoothest ride (we’re being kind in our judgment here). It is, however, a different ballgame altogether now – with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge. This era begins with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, a slate comprising fresh iterations and adaptations of both movies and shows.
Aur revoir Zack Snyder, hello James Gunn | Credits: Warner Bros.
Unlike the fragmented approach of the past and countless Zack Snyder misfires, Chapter One looks to present a cohesive and interconnected universe. While characters like Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker remain in their respective Elseworlds universes, this feels like the fresh start DC fans have been waiting for. Let’s take a closer look at each project in Chapter One, and see just how they are set to reshape the DC Universe.

Blumhouse Productions is one of the most successful horror houses in Hollywood, but the studio's remakes and sequels to bona fide spooky classics have proven to be a mixed bag. There have been dull efforts like "The Exorcist: Believer" but also impressive reboots like Leigh Whannell's "The Invisible Man," not to mention David Gordon Green's polarizing "Halloween" trilogy. Despite his company's willingness to resurrect iconic properties, however, some horror classics are apparently off-limits, even for Jason Blum and the gang of ghouls.
While speaking to Den of Geek, Blum revealed why his banner hasn't pressed ahead with plans to reboot the 1935 classic "Bride of Frankenstein," noting that it doesn't align with Blumhouse's frightening vision for the Universal Monsters:
"I don't really know what we would do with it; it's kind of a case-by-case basis. It was always sort of funny or always sort of campy, and I could...

Creature Commandos, the first DC project under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revitalized DC Studios, premieres today at Max.
Gunn, who wrote the seven episode season with episodic direction by Matt Peters, tells Crew Call about discovering this comic book about a ragtag bunch of misfits –i.e. G.I. Robots, Bride of Frankenstein, Eric Frankenstein, Clayface, and Rick Flagg Sr.– who make Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy look like tree-hugging members of the Peace Corps. How did they come to be? This troupe is assembled by security operative Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who is now only permitted to deploy non-humans on high-risk missions post Suicide Squad.
These Creature Commandos are a hysterical, yet lovable bunch.
“I think the creatures are more tragic than the Guardians,” says Gunn juxtaposing the DC guys to the protags of his Marvel Guardians movies.

While the lineup for DC’s Creature Commandos is exciting, it glaringly omits one of the best-loved characters from Gunn's earlier work: King Shark. The announcement of Creature Commandos, a show focused on a team of misfit monsters and antiheroes, seemed like the perfect chance to reintroduce King Shark. Creature Commandos is the first official project in Dcu Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, but follows on directly from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker - which were retroactively made Dcu canon. The anthropomorphic shark was a standout in The Suicide Squad, yet is conspicuously missing from Creature Commandos.
King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone, was one of the most memorable characters in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Officially named Nanaue, this humanoid shark brought a unique blend of humor and heart to the film. Whether he was struggling to make friends, wearing a hilariously ineffective disguise, or tearing through enemies with terrifying brutality,...

Creature Commandos arrives on Max later this week, but what does the future hold in store for Task Force M beyond the seven-episode series?
That remains to be seen, though James Gunn has already hinted at a second season (we'd imagine that hinges on how big of an audience the show's debut outing receives). If nothing else, we expect these eclectic characters to eventually show up in live-action with Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. already confirmed as the first of them to do so in next year's Superman and Peacemaker season 2.
Thanks to concept artist Felipe Illa, we have an idea of what Indira Varma's Bride Of Frankenstein could look like in a future live-action movie or TV show.
In fact, this piece was so convincing that many DC fans on social media were left convinced it was real and perhaps released to promote Creature Commandos' premiere. While that's not the case,...

James Gunn has always been a storyteller who gravitates toward outsiders. From the scrappy, irreverent heart of Guardians of the Galaxy to the gloomy, chaotic hallways of The Suicide Squad, his work feels like a love letter to the misfits—characters that are too strange, flawed, or deadly to fit cleanly into the environments they inhabit.
Gunn takes this attitude to a new level in Creature Commandos, which feels deeply personal and weirdly defiant. In an animated series about monsters struggling for their place in a morally bankrupt world, Gunn appears to ask: What does it mean to belong, and at what cost?
It is impossible to divorce Creature Commandos from its larger setting. As the first formal project in Gunn’s stint as co-head of DC Studios, it holds a lot of weight—not just for the new Dcu but also for Gunn himself, who is now an architect and artist.

The Dcu is on the way! The first entry in the new universe is already distinguishing itself from its Marvel counterpart by making it an animated one. Marvel is no stranger to animation now, but it certainly didn’t start that way. Creature Commandos, a lesser known group, streams on Max on December 5, just a few days away.
One could say that Creature Commandos falls under the category of niche comic book characters and groups. Not many people know that both Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein are characters within the world of DC. If you asked a random person on the street who Doctor Phosphorus is, there’s a very slim chance they’d be able to tell you. However, the same used to be said of Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Yondu. Back in 2020, the comic book arm of Legendary Entertainment brought the world a graphic novel called Bram Stoker’s Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi, which was exactly what the title promised – an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula that featured the likeness of genre icon Bela Lugosi, who played the title character in the classic 1931 film (not to mention more than 260 stage performances and 1948’s Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein), as Dracula. Now, Legendary has teamed up with Sara Karloff of Karloff Enterprises, as well as Kerry Gammill and El Garing, the team behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi to bring us Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Starring Boris Karloff, which features a new design for Frankenstein’s monster, but the creature has the face of genre icon Boris Karloff. Karloff, of course, played Frankenstein’s monster in 1931’s Frankenstein and reprised the role for Bride of Frankenstein in...

Creature Commandos is set to kick off James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe with an animated series that includes some of DC's strangest characters. Gunn revealed in January 2023 that he had begun writing a new TV series for his revamped Dcu, confirmed to be Creature Commandos on January 31, 2023, when Gunn revealed part of the slate for the DC Universe's Chapter 1, titled "Gods and Monsters". The seven-episode series will mark the first project in the new Dcu, and is currently scheduled for release in 2024, with the Dcu Superman movie releasing the year after.
Creature Commandos will adapt several characters from the comics that haven't been seen or mentioned in previous live-action projects. Creature Commandos won't be live-action either, but Gunn confirmed that the new DC Universe would share continuity between feature films, TV shows, and numerous animated series, so there's an opportunity for these obscure characters to crossover...

This essay by Robert Englund on his favorite horror movie of all time is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
It’s so difficult for me; I change it all the time. For classics, it would probably be “Bride of Frankenstein.” I do love that with all my heart. I love “Rosemary’s Baby.” “The Exorcist.” You can watch those again and again and again, and the acting is just so strong. But I love a down-and-dirty 1972 film by a young Brian De Palma called “Sisters.” It has some of the best split-screen in the history of cinema. There’s a performance by Margot Kidder… Conjoined twins freak me out anyway, but there’s an actor. More recently, I love “Longlegs.” I love “Get Out.” I don’t want to live in a world without Jordan Peele movies.
The first movie that scared me was “Them!

With Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited “Megalopolis” now playing in theaters, many cinephiles have been dazzled and baffled in equal measures by the sprawling passion project. But even if the film itself is polarizing, there’s no denying that it reflects Coppola’s unending passion for cinema and a lifetime spent studying history and art.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein film has finally finished production, nine months after it started. More on the film here.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has finally wrapped production after nine months of filming. It’s not often these days that we see film productions run so long – the 100 day club of film shoots has been quiet – but then again, we all know what a master craftsman del Toro is.
The Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker took to social media to announce the end of shooting, simply stating: “Shooting has been completed on “F” — Joy!!!”
Netflix is backing the project for which del Toro has assembled some heavyweight talent: Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth and Charles Dance all star in del Toro’s take on Mary Shelley’s legendary horror tale, widely considered to also be the first ever science fiction story.

Horror romances can be a difficult genre to get right, but Lisa Frankenstein makes a valiant attempt at recreating both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein for a modern audience. Though the cast of Lisa Frankenstein is excellent, its mixture of kooky teen drama, body horror, genuine romance, and modern sexuality doesn't quite work, with the choice to also make Lisa Frankenstein a comedy overshadowing what was an unexpectedly emotional love story. Though Lisa Frankenstein could still become a cult hit, it didn't do well at the box office, earning just $13 million against a budget of $9.9 million.
Lisa Frankenstein stars Kathryn Newton, who has also starred in horror comedies, Freaky and Abigail. Though Freaky performed better than Lisa Frankenstein at the box office, Lisa Frankenstein has an 81% positive audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is Kathryn Newton's first horror romance. Something that very few horror romances acknowledge in any detail at...

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

2025's Wolf Man movie brings back an iconic monster classic just years after the return of The Invisible Man, raising questions about their connection. It wouldn't be the first time these movie monsters have appeared on-screen together, given their ties to the Universal monster movies of the 1930s & '40s, which saw them paired with the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Mummy, and more. Especially given Universal's attempt to create a Marvel-like universe with these titles in 2017's The Mummy reboot, franchise questions are prevalent with the new reboot.
Wolf Man is set to premiere in January 2025, with Leigh Whannell directing the project. Poor Things star Christopher Abbott will play the titular character, with actress Julia Garner as his co-star. The film will arrive in a wave of rebooted versions of famous monster movie titles, with Robert Eggers' Nosferatu premiering only weeks before, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein...

Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

There are classic films, then there are all-time classics that are damn near untouchable. Such is the case with Universal's "Creature from the Black Lagoon." First released in 1954, director Jack Arnold's heralded creature feature is among the most acclaimed of the Universal Monsters classics, right up there with "Bride of Frankenstein." While the film is close to untouchable, a modern horror master is going to take a crack at it anyway.
We recently learned that James Wan is developing a "Creature from the Black Lagoon" remake that he intends to direct. This would be his return to horror following the release of last year's "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." More than that, one could argue it's the most bold creative risk Wan has taken in his wildly successful career. It's hard to picture anyone better suited to the job than Wan. This article contains spoilers for "Batman: Caped Crusader."
"Batman: Caped Crusader" promised to reinvent some of Batman's biggest villains and the 10-episode first season delivered. The Penguin is reimagined as a woman (Oswalda Cobblepot) while Harvey Dent actually becomes a better man once he's turned into Two-Face. With Clayface, the show instead goes back to his roots — but with the way the character has evolved, his original self seems unfamiliar.
Clayface is the villain of "Caped Crusader" episode 2, "... And Be A Villain" (written by prolific comic writer Greg Rucka). He is a British actor named Basil Karlo (Dan Donohue), one who has the talent but not the looks to be a leading man. Thus, he's stuck playing monsters and heels in B-horror movies. When murders and disappearances pile up around the set, Batman and Detective Renee Montoya investigate.
It turns out Karlo was funding an experimental treatment to make his face moldable like clay.
