William 'Stage' Boyd was either drunk or on drugs during the filming of the final chapter, and it shows. His bad behavior on and off camera got him in so much trouble that it wrecked his career. Fellow actors in this movie didn't want to be around him when he was inebriated; this may be why he is shown alone in his final scenes. Many referred to him as a "functioning drunk". He passed away shortly after this movie was released from problems caused by his excessive drinking. A judge ordered him to add the "Stage" to his name so he wouldn't be confused with the other William Boyd, who played Hopalong Cassidy and whose career was being adversely affected by "Stage" Boyd's bad behavior.
This is the second of two feature version of the serial "The Lost City (1935), with both versions bearing the serial's title and released to theaters in 1935 along with the serial. Two additional feature versions were also made from the serial later on. This version encompasses material from the first four and last four chapters of the serial, omitting all material involving Arab slaver Ben Ali, the Spider People, and Queen Rama, but with the same beginning and ending as the serial. The serial and this feature version were among the first films sold to television in the late 1940's.
Some of the electric gizmos created by Ken Strickfaden had been used at Universal for Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935).
Two different feature versions of this serial were released theatrically in 1935. See The Lost City (1935) and The Lost City (1935). One of the feature versions was condensed from the entire serial, the other was condensed from just chapters 1-4 with some added wrap up scenes tacked on. A few years later, yet another feature version of this serial was released theatrically, titled City of Lost Men (1940).
