On October 11, 1935, De Kribbebijter was screened simultaneously in cinemas in the Dutch cities of Haarlem, Gouda, Alkmaar, Arnhem, Breda and The Hague in celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the stage play, which was first performed in the Netherlands in 1920 and went on to attract full houses for over seven months.
De Kribbebijter played in Dutch cinemas for over seven years, until December 1942.
After successful screenings for 'Vereniging Neerlandia', a London-based social and cultural club aimed at Dutch expats, and an equally successful test run at London's Academy Theatre, De Kribbebijter became the first Dutch film to receive a standard release in the UK, under the international title 'The Cross-Patch'.
