The inspiration for the movie was the kidnapping of a little boy, George Weyerhauser, who, as in the film, was released unharmed. The subsequent plot, of the couple with a baby and dog who stumble upon the hideout, is fictitious.
This was the first case in which kidnappers were identified by the use of marked bills given them as ransom money.
