One of over 700 Paramount productions, filmed between 1929-49, which were sold to MCA/Universal in 1958 for television distribution, and have been owned and controlled by Universal ever since; its earliest documented telecasts took place in Omaha Tuesday 4 August 1959 on KETV (Channel 7) and in Seattle Tuesday 24 November 1959 on KIRO (Channel 7).
Stepin Fetchit was hospitalized after being knocked unconscious in one scene by a racist actor who had surreptitiously substituted a billiard ball for the much softer ball Fetchit was supposed to be hit in the face with at a carnival attraction. In the carnival attraction scene, this exact action occurs, but is played for comic effect.
Marsha Hunt attended a screening of the film at Cinecon 54 on September 3, 2018, and engaged in a brief Q&A session before the film was shown. She received a standing ovation.
