Mickey's rival that swoons Minnie is named Mortimer Mouse. When Walt Disney created Mickey, he originally named his brainchild Mortimer Mouse, but his wife insisted that he be named Mickey, since "Mortimer" is too fancy a name for a cartoon character.
Storybook publications changed Mortimer Mouse's name to Montmorency Rodent (pronounced Rodawn when he is pretending to be French) in the early 1940s, as there were several Mortimers in the Mouse universe at the time. More recent versions restore his original name.
"Mickey"s Rival" from 1936 is the first and only main Cartoon appearance of Mortimer Mouse.
Mortimer was characterized as a James Cagney type, as shown in production notes.
