The Penitentes or "Penitente Brotherhood" is a real-life Catholic lay confraternity, mainly active in the U.S. states of Colorado and New Mexico. They follow the practices of the Flagellant orders from the Middle Ages, with asceticism and self-flagellation. The ideal of the Flagellants was the "mortification of the flesh" through flagellation.
